My opinion is that good decisions are good no matter where they come from. I don't care if Bob the Builder enacts the legislation, as long as it is something I believe in, I support it.
The fact of the matter is that the local school systems have allowed fast food outlets to become a child's only source of nutrition during the day. That needs to stop. Could parents do more to try to keep their children from this unhealthy problem? Sure, but raising a child is tough enough. Every little bit helps. |

Yeah, I tend towards Cam here. I do think its a good idea, but it should be left up to the school boards. On the other hand, I concede that at a state level, this is less of an issue for me then if the federal government had issued such an edict. The state is the largest source of funding and the institution charged with providing it - surely it has a right to determine how it provides that education ?

Perhaps its more important to look at the fact that schools installed vending machines and allowed fast food places to serve on campus not in any effort to take care of the students, but in a bold faced attempt to make more money.
This is something that is inherintly wrong and should be stopped, but the local school systems would never have done so on their own. I still applaud the move. kids don't need shit food readily available in the hallways. |

Are the school administrators profiteering here? Padding their own pockets with receipts from these vending machines? Come on -- at least be fair about it. If the underlying focus was money (and I have no doubt that's true) let's not suggest that this was for some sort of illicit personal gain. The funds received this way are, I'm sure, allocated through the same publicly accountable process as any other revenues - supporting all components of the education program. Unless there is evidence of kickbacks or the like, it's not really fair to insinuate as much. |

This has been a good debate with a lot of interesting views/points. At the end of the day, I think KWhit sums up my position on each aspect of it. We are of one mind on these topics.
