Watson answers on 17. Should be a birdie to go back up 1. Westwood just found the bunker on 18.

Watson with 1 shot lead going to 18...Westwood reaches the green from the bunker. Wow

Just an awful putt. Poor Tom. Not sure my nerves can handle a 4-hole playoff. Especially given that Cink finished on a roll and Tom didn't.

Sigh. Down 1 and missed the green at 6. Has to get up and down from here or he'll be down two shots and desperately need an eagle @ 17.

Yes, it is. I figured he was going to fade after missing the chance to win, but this has been sad to watch.

How painful is this. So close to winning it on 18, leading almost all the way and then collapse like this. Tom doesn't deserve to go down like this.

I know it's no consolation but Cink did play well in the playoff. Looks like he'll be -2 in the playoff.

Still quite a story. He finished 2nd. That's tough to beat.

Here's a shot by shot of the playoff. Watson basically had the wheels come off and Cink played fine. Jason Sobel's Live Blog - ESPN

Well that was a disappointing playoff, like everyone else I wanted Watson to pull it off.
At least Cink didn't back into it, shooting -2 over the playoff. He's won on Hilton Head twice and it's nice to see him win a major. |

I thought the constant mention of Watson's putting woes 10-15 years ago was a bit overblown. Strange and Azinger sounded like a skipping record. Tom putted well all week. Just because he missed a pressure-packed putt on 18 that most pros would have missed doesn't mean that Tom is suddenly returning to the yips of the late 80s-90s. Regardless, was fantastic to watch my golf idol go at it one more time. I've watched for him on the leaderboard in every major for many years hoping he'd make one last run. I never thought I'd be rewarded ever again with a weekend like what we just saw. I'd also note that it was refreshing to see a player who did little more than grimace if he hit a bad shot and was gracious in defeat. Most tour players (including Tiger) could learn a lot from watching Tom Watson play. Great article by Joe Po as usual....... To simply say he "missed" that putt isn't anywhere close to accurate. He didn't leave it a few inches short, roll it past the cup, or even misread a break. It was a travesty of an attempt. |

I agree, but he would have never been in that position without the putting display on the previous 71 holes. He missed it, but most would have. It's hard to hit a putt like that with your entire body shaking. We've just never seen it before because no one's ever even reached that point at that age in the history of golf. He's a legend of golf, but he's a 59 year old legend. |

If only he had decided on the 9-iron into 18 instead, in the press conference Watson said he thought about it before going with the 8-iron.

Strictly looking at the last hole, you're correct. The putt wasn't what lost it for him. It was the 2nd shot. With that said, there's tons of shots that you could second guess, but that's part of the game. He holed several long putts that had no business going in during the tournament. If he doesn't hit 2-3 of those, he's not even in the picture. We'll just take it for what it was, which was a fantastic story to watch play out. I'm sure ABC was thanking its lucky stars that it happened that way because they needed something once Tiger didn't make the cut to draw in viewers. It did extremely well in ratings for a non-Tiger weekend. |

Good news for those wanting to see the older guys get another shot at the Open. They've amended the rules to allow anyone over 60 years of age a 5 year exemption if they've placed in the top 10 in the last 5 years. As a result, both Tom Watson and Greg Norman have been granted 5 year exemptions.

Except Norman doesn't get any benefit. He's already exempt for being a prior Open winner and that takes precedence over this new exemption, which, neatly enough, runs out right when he turns 60 and loses his former champion exemption. He's got to get into the top ten in the next five years in order to benefit from this rule.

Reasonable modification. Given how Watson did this year not having him there next year would have been a cloud over the open, even if he never challenges again.
I still say there are few professional achievements I've seen as exciting as Watson's run at The Open. This will be a movie in 25 years that will make men bawl their eyes out. |

Yeah the only one off hand I can think which was better was Jack's win at Augusta in 86. But Watson did it at a much older age. |
