Have you seen who has actually made it to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Based on the decreasing quality of the classes, we should be debating whether or not Gin Blossoms, Hootie & the Blowfish or Belle & Sebastian will get in, since almost everybody else that's been mentioned is a lock.
The only real "drama" to the hall of fame picks is the politics. The rap barrier was torn down a few years ago, now the disco barrier is torn down. Surprisingly, the barrier to metal era bands isn't completely down. Hey, I like The Pretenders, but how are they a first ballot HOFer and Bon Jovi isn't in yet? The next big barriers that needs to come down is the New Wave and Punk walls. B-52s, Pet Shop Boys, The Cure and many others are worthy. I think they are just as much a part of rock & roll as Donna Summer. |

Overstate much? 10 albums, 29 years if numbers are right.

The Punk wall is already down. there are several Punk groups in the hall already. Sex Pistols and the Ramones and the Stooges are in.

Re: The White Stripes
They have some really good stuff, but I think Jack White transcends The White Stripes. Whatever he touches is gold. Does that translate to sales? Nah. What does that mean? I dunno. I'm drunk. |

Here's a group that no one mentioned, and really was unique in the impact it had, but really is hard to see as Rock even though the Hall has really added a lot of non-Rock artists. This group really changed things and had a ton of influence. The first time I encountered their music on MTV I didn't know music could do that.
What do you do with Enigma?

RNR HoF is a joke. Why Kiss is not in it is beyond me. And finally Rush gets in which took way to long.

100% politics. I do find Kiss on the rather terrible side, but what they did for live shows and merchandise was simply unheard of at that time.

I'd say undoubtedly. While they may not have sold a ton of albums they have insane critical acclaim (regardless of 'grammy' wins). Jack White is considered a genius and the White Stripes his greatest creation (well, I guess if he keeps putting out amazing solo albums as his first one, he may just go in by himself).

I'm probably as big an Enigma fan as you're likely to find in this thread (was really into the first two albums way back when) but I don't see how they even get in the discussion. One breaktrhough album, one decent follow-up, then a whole lot of mostly bad pop.
Maybe you make the case for Cretu getting in as a producer but that's as far as I can imagine it going.

Props to Rush, long overdue.
Now how about Cheap Trick gets their deserved recognition. Huge in the late 70's early 80's and named by so many bands as a major influence, plus they still put on a solid live show, even though Robin's vocals are slipping a bit. Edit: And yes on Deep Purple too Last edited by BYU 14 : 12-18-2012 at 11:05 AM. |

Surely they should change the name to "Music Hall of Fame".
A few of the recent inductees lately have been nothing like Rock bands. (Madonna, Abba, the various Hip Hop bands) |

If she continues at a decent pace, Adele had a pretty good shot at making it. But she is still 20+ years away from being eligible.

A lot of recent successes have that issue. I think the diversification of entertainment has resulted in even crappier popular music than before. Katy Perry has sold a ton of records and has a lot of albums and songs at or near the top, but she can barely hold a tune. Aristsi like her and Speras are no Madonna. They aren't even Kylie Minogue. We are in an era of songbirds who do not write their own music, or write very litte. What do you do with Kelly Clarkson? Another question in the Usher vein are what about Gloria Esteban? Someone like Jay Z is in, but Usher is up for grabs and likely won;t I'd think. I'm shocked that a group like Dave Clark Five makes it in for following a trend and yet looking at the 90s and 00s and even further back we see issues with who makes it in.

It's not lately. The inductees are full of R&B artists from the early rock era. Marvin Gaye and the Temptations aren;t anymore "rock" than Abba or Donna Summer. But then you have a weird definition of Rock. What artists and non-artists get in becomes really rough. Is Folk rock? Is a crossover artist, such as Johnny Cash, rock? Is bubblegum pop rock?

Bumping this, after reading this post:
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of the Future « They have many of the same locks that we did, including Pearl Jam, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead, and discuss the chances of others like Rage Against The Machine and Foo Fighters, plus a bunch of pop acts I wouldn't really have thought of.

I have to wonder where Britney falls into this conversation. Overwhelming popular success, and she really re-ignited the teen pop phenomenon (for better or worse), so I think she has the influence factor as well.

I heard a Pink song and keep being amazed she continues to be around. She'll be an interesting case. Britney might be a tough sell, but I could see it going either way. I don't think either get in for a long time though.

Personally I find Pink to fairly dull pop. She's got a great voice, but doesn't really do much interesting with it, IMO.

Critically, sure. But Eminem is in an entirely different stratosphere in terms of records sold (as in, more than Guns n' Roses or Britney Spears). I'm sure in terms of the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, that's like hitting 600 home runs.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also goes nuts for Grammy Awards and Kanye is like 8th all time or something like that (and likely should be at least one more for Album of the Year that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy didn't even nominated for).
I just checked, and Kanye is indeed 8th all time in Grammys (1 less than U2): Grammy Award records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
