He left because he realized he likes coaching college better, not because things went slightly wrong. Things went just as wrong his first season at Arkansas. I don't think he goes anywhere, and not just because his buyout is upwards of 5 million at present.

Don't kid yourself, if Florida comes calling, he is gone. That being said, I think Florida will have better options.

Don't kid yourself, you have no idea what you are talking about. I'm not saying he wouldn't go, but just assuming he would is all you are doing.

1) I don't think there are many better options
2) I don't think he leaves if they call

1. Florida is one of the top 10 if not top 5 schools in America.
2. I don't think they even offer him at this point.

Maybe they offer JoePa since all old people go to Florida to retire anyway.

Joe's been retired for years. And I was referring to Spurrier.

I don't think so. I don't know how much longer he'll be coaching and Florida has to be looking for a coach that would be around longer than 4-5 years.

So is this a flat out resignation where he is just done with the school? You'd think if it was health related and not life threatening, he'd take a year off or something to get better. Kind of like what Coach K did in the early 90's.

Supposedly he is staying on at Florida in a non-coaching capacity.

I think they are considering cancelling the football game so they can talk about Urban Meyer more.

That makes me think they aren't going to go with a big name replacement. An assistant or something will take over for a year and he'll be back when he's healthy. It's just too big of a job to walk away from completely.

Steve Addazio the current OC, is most likely to take over, at least until Meyer deems himself fit to return.
Just my guess.

Interesting if true. I wonder why would UF would not just go out and find the best coach for the job. Addazio's offense has been the subject of criticism within the Gator Nation.

Interesting, ESPN is now reporting that "Meyer's heart is healthy, but that he has had chest pain over the years that is related to stress."

The pickings are very slim for best coach for the job.

Brian Kelly would've been ideal(maybe), but ND has him.
Time for Florida to scour the smaller unknowns to pull a "Meyer out of the hat".

I feel bad for OU fans as the Stoops to UF rumors started mere moments after the announcement. Stoops loves Florida, coached there and it makes perfect sense he'd wind up there.

We'll see.

I still took about about 5 seconds looking at ESPN's page before it sunk in what I was reading. This has to get a special category from Bill Simmons in terms of sucker punch losses. Can you imagine next year no Tebow, or Meyer for Florida?

I had a random thought after 'Bama beat Florida. It kind of came across like when 'Bama beat Miami to win the title. Miami was never really the same after that and their swagger completely changed. I began to wonder if it wasn't a sign of the changing of the guard. 'Bama manhandles Florida, Tebow cries, and now Meyer steps down. Ho. Ly. Crap. Can the Sugar Bowl be any less interesting?

Yeah, I'll be more uncomfortable about this one than I was about Notre Dame, for sure. For now, I console myself with the fact that he has turned it down once to stay at Oklahoma.

Which makes me wonder if they'll be able to get a big name coach to come. If I'm, say, Bob Stoops, why would I leave a University I rule for a job with my predecessor still there looking over my shoulder? I don't think it is a good idea. He could help bring in the next coach, but then he needs to leave campus. If I'm UF, I'd buy him a retirement home in Miami or something. That is if they aren't just planning on him returning in a year or two. This could get ugly.

All of the quotes he's citing make me believe it's absolutely certain he'll be back to coaching in a few years in a place other than Florida. I think they're just trying to do this their way. Not to say his health isn't an issue, mind you. Just saying, those quotes to me seem pretty clear that in a few years, he'll be back on someone's sideline.

Meyer is reportedly having second thoughts and may just take a leave of absence until the start of the 2010 season or through the 2010 season.

Add this to the unsubstantiated rumor brigade, but a friend of mine is flying back to LA from Gainesville today, and was in the GNV airport at the same time the Florida team was earlier this morning (they're flying to NOLA, obviously). He talked to a friend of his who is a grad assistant, who said the retirement is definitely a retirement.

Very much this. What happens if the team "struggles?" Does Florida try to get him back? Do you fire the interm guy and how easy do you think it would be to get a replacement knowing Meyer could come back?

I think that is what this latest move is as well, but I don't see it being successful. He's already put out there that he is retiring, and I think it is hard to undo that. Doubt will be there now even if he says it is just a break or changes his mind.

Count me as someone who believes if Meyer stays at Florida in any position, that kills Florida's chances of signing a high profile Coach. Not to many coaches are going to want to come in and play 2nd Fiddle to Meyer at Florida.

If Meyer stays at Florida they will probably be forced to promote one of their Coordinators.

Yeah, I don't believe it for a second. They were probably surprised at how many kids started to look elsewhere when he announced his resignation.

I can't see this working, though. Even if he does intend to step away for just a year now other coaches have ammo to sway these kids. Football recruiting isn't like basketball recruiting so I can't see a coach K type situation being successful from a recruiting standpoint.

It's really much better for UF that Meyer just walks away. They might save a couple of kids from this recruiting class but at the cost of opening the door for "will he/won't he" and opposition coaches being able to use it to negatively recruit.

Plus if they bring a coach from another top program they'll be getting some top recruits to replace the ones they might lose. If it's Stoops (sorry OU fans) I guarantee you he's bring all the San Diego kids to Florida with him.
