Illinois didn't play well enough down the stretch to deserve the win. But I don't know many fan bases that would take a 39-11 mismatch at the foul line without some complaint.
I don't have a lot of use for the Illini message boards (that I have read) because they are filled with such a high percentage of homers - any critical thinking about the beloved is met with knee-jerk defensiveness that stifles intelligent conversation. Unless you have managed to stick it out there for 1,000+ posts, in which case you get a tiny amount of latitude ... |

I'm really pulling for Bradley today. I think they have a real shot. They have been a completely different team since mid January when O'Bryant finally meshed in with the team. Regardless, I think if the sixth-best team in the Valley can make the Sweet 16, it should make a case that maybe the second and third-best teams deserved to get in too. |

You do realize your team is in a Conference that is closer to the "Big 6" as you put it rather than a MidMajor? Before the defections of Louisville and Cincinnati to the Big East, CUSA was a pretty good Basketball conference. Nah no hard on for me, he just doesnt do it for me anymore. He really needs to get better on his acting skills. He doesnt sell me to the fact that more Americans buy Chevy's than any other car. It might make believe it more if he dunked a ball like Dicky V does in that Pizza commerical. Edit: I hope Bradley beats the shit out of Pitt. I am sick of seeing Carl Krauser's whining face everywhere. Last edited by Dr. Sak : 03-19-2006 at 10:34 AM. |

Gonzaga won, that made my day yesterday. Hopefully they can get past UCLA but I am not holding my breath.

From a historical point of view, wouldn't you expect Illinois to be more along the lines of the UNC's, UK's, KU's, Indiana's, UCLA's, etc., than they are?
This is the homestate to one of the best hoops pipelines (Chicagoland area) in America. You would think they would have had more success than they have had over time.

Wow, Bill Rafferty actually said something useful ... he pointed out that the scoreboard at the bottom of the screen says Brad Pitt.
4 points for Pitt in 10 minutes. Wow. |

2 in the Final 16 for the Mo-V?
Sounds nice.. How about a CAA Rep to go along with that (did you hear that GMU?)

Unfortunately more than likely that will happen Radii...
Keep an eye out on the refereeing in that one.. UNC is almost right there with Duke in terms of getting the benefit of the doubt.

I am digging this Bradley/Pitt game.
Of course, I absolutely cannot wait for the Memphis game. I will be rooting harder for Bucknell than any other team all tourney long.

Bradley's on fire and they have been playing ferocious defense. The last couple of trips down have been a bit ragged on offense, and Pitt's looking like they are calming down. I'm getting worried, but I still like Bradley.

That's what happens when you have Lou Henson as a coach for so long. Go back through the tourney seedings since the tourney went to 64 teams and U of I has had plenty of high seedings. They've also had plenty of flame outs. The team that was seeded #1 in 2001 or 2002 should have gone all the way, but Self showed what type of coach he was in how he played against Arizona in the Elite Eight. He lost his head. Not surprised he is 0-2 at Kansas the last two years in the opening round. |

I said it before, I'll say it again: kiss my mid-major ass.
I want to order a Wichita State and Bradley t-shirt, then ship them to Billy Packer care of CBS with a note attached -- "Billy, Shove these up your ass for me." Last edited by kcchief19 : 03-19-2006 at 01:27 PM. |

I am astounded by the number of people falling for this mid-major storyline. Hmmm... CBS plays up the emotions of it's viewers and gets them to tune in for games involving Cinderellas like Bradley and Wichita State. "Fuck Billy Packer and CBS! Let me tune in and watch CBS to show them how much I hate them!" It happens every year guys. Every year. CBS might not be happy if the championship game doesn't involve Duke or UConn, but I bet they are loving how this MVC thing is playing out right now.

Thus far it doesn't look like UNC will be needing assistance from the zebras. They'll be on standby just in case though.
And check this out..... Kansas out - Wichita State in the Final 16. Illinois out - Bradley in the Final 16. See a pattern here? The Mo-V does belong, how about that. Good basketball does exist outside of the so-called "Big Six".

No one ever said that good basketball doesn't exist outside of the top 6 conferences. Ya'll act like this is the first time ever teams like Bradley have made the Sweet 16. This has been happening for years and it has given exposure to those conferences. That's why the quality of players going to those schools has increased. This exposure by CBS and by those teams winning is only going to help them more. And give it up on the Refs, it is just an old, tiresome excuse. |

Bsak, there are only two teams that I truly believe get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to calls.... Duke and North Carolina. Also please keep in mind that I am not just "throwing this out there".. I am a big college hoops follower and former player of the game myself. Watch some old games involving the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels and keep tabs on the close calls.. Check out which direction those calls go.
As for the "Big Six" comment, my friend if you have any idea on how D-I Athletics are run (and I'm sure that you do), you would know that these teams/conferences have every single advantage possible going into the actual competiton.. To see the Bradley's, Wichita's, and Bucknell's be able to accomplish what they do is truly amazing when considering ALL factors involved.

I totally agree with you that it is really great to see these teams beat the big boys. For the most part I root for the smallers schools such as Bucknell or Bradley to win and I understand they are at a big disadvantage when it comes to revenue and facilities which makes their success even better. I would just be interested in seeing how they would do playing a full season in one of those "big" conferences. They might do really good but I think there is a difference between winning a game or two in the tourney and being in the top half of a "big" conference after playing everyone twice.
As for the refs comment, I am a high school ref and I guess I just take it a little too personal when people constantly get on the refs for bad calls. I take the job very seriously and would never let any favoritism or rooting interest get in the way of calling the best game I could. The guys that do college and pro I hope would share the same thought as I did. Does Duke get calls yes, so does UNC, but when they dont get the calls it isnt as publicized as when the do get the calls. |

Though I think MK is being a bit too fanatical, I understand where he is coming from. Remember last Sunday the MVC was a "shitty conference" (to some folks) that was barely deserving of the automatic bid. I got the impression from too many folks including Billy Packer that membership in one of the bigger conferences entitled marginal schools to get into the tournement over teams from the smaller conferences. Very few people were saying that the MVC teams played good basketball last week, despite not watching them play.

You may very well be right about your conference season in comparison to single elimination tournament comment, but unfortunately we will never know. The "Big Boys" will never even consider the likes of MVC and CAA schools joining their prestigious conferences. They have a hard enough time just getting non-conference games with teams from the BCS Leagues.
I didn't know you were a ref by the way.. Very cool way to stay involved in the game. I envy you in that regard and only wish I had the time needed to be able to do the same, as I'm sure it is very enjoyable.

I would really love to see in the next 20 years, a big sponsor pony up some money to get some of these smaller schools to join an alternative to the NCAA, sorta like the NCAA relegated the NAIA to the backwaters, I don't it'd happen with a behemoth as large as the NCAA, but in certain sports and done correctly, I think some schools would gladly jump ship to a new league that offered them TV and some revenue opportunities beyond what they can do now.

Umm..neither. I'm thinking a completely different intercollegiate athletic association. Like a complete rival to the NCAA, which to me is run like a cartel. I mean, the more likely alternative would be the NCAA deciding to split D-1 basketball, between the 1-AAA schools (non-football) and the football-playing schools. But it just seems to me that if a school spends its existance trying to play for a chance to lose to some big school that obviously outspends them 50 to 1. Eventually ADs are going to get tired of getting a sip of bad Kool-Aid and will opt for an alternative, so long as there is some money involved and with the NCAA buying the NIT, it seems this might be the best way to get all those "pretenders" into a league they can win and get the other teams a chance to play in the big dance year in and year out. Not that I think it's a good idea. Just saying that's where it seems it'll go sooner than later.
