SimCity Social on Facebook makes me want to play Sim City 3000. I wish I could find my disc.

I've never played it. Does it require that you be 'social' to advance?

One thing I didn't like about Civ on fb was the more friends you had playing, the better the experience. Well, I don't have enough friends smart enough to play a game like that.

It does, for the most part. I've only got one friend out of 150 that plays, which has slowed me down. You need gems to advance some things (police, fire stations, some businesses). You get one per level, or you can ask friends to help you fill positions in those places instead of using gems. I'm enjoying the experience of it, but I don't have enough people playing.

My dog, a Jack Russell Terrier, has a severely sprained right front leg. This is what happens when you try to catch elusive red squirrels. Because of this, he cannot be active for 4-6 weeks. No playing, no jumping, no running, etc. 4-6 weeks with no activity. For a Jack Russell.

Mission Impossible.

We have a lab mix with some form of inflamed tendon in one of his back legs/ankles. It was like 3 times normal size yesterday. Got the same advice - no running or jumping, have to take me out on leash to go to the bathroom. Not going to be easy, even though he's older, so it's not like he runs and jumps around a lot.

Crate.

It's going to be a huge pain in the ass.

Not to mention the pain killer they gave him is the "dog equivalent to Valium"

I've been working in this office for nearly 2.5 years, and to the best of my knowledge this floor has been occupied for many years. We're talking a standard NYC office building, about 50 floors. At some point between 8am and 11:30am today, someone in maintenance added urinal cakes to the bathroom. This perplexed me as it seems like it should be something that is either included from jump, or never at all. It left me wondering how this decision came to be, and what the motivation was behind it.

Complaints that people were "missing the toilet". Cakes were suggested to "provide a target".

I don't know...I can't say I've even noticed spillage on the ground, much less enough where it would be a problem. Possibility though

Maybe a new head facility guy just joined effective August 1st and was shocked to find a building without urinal cakes.

I shouldn't type this out, because if it comes true people will say I jinxed it, but I'm beginning to be wary of all the hype surrounding the Mars Curiosity rover. It's getting a ton of attention, which is great. I read today that they're even going to broadcast the landing in Times Square. If this ends up not going well, it's going to doom NASA funding even more. All I can think of is the Challenger disaster and the hype around that.

Also, I might end up having to go to London again for work. I don't mind going, but I hope it doesn't end up interfering with my PAX plans.

So yeah, a day after they ask me if I might be able to go, they're telling me to make travel arrangements. Bleh. So...if anyone in London wants to meet up...I'll get there the 13th and leave the 30th (so I can get home in time to fly to PAX...or fly directly to Seattle).

It's not dead. It just needs proper resuscitation. I hadn't written anything poetic from Jan 31 until I got inspired on July 17. And five more in the past two days.

Quote:
I’ve got myself a hatful of sorrow and loose change
Playing the blues harp, though it suffers from my range
Down at the old bus depot, keeping out of the rain
Giving each passerby the saddest eyes I can feign
Trying to muster enough funds to purchase a pass
To any destination, whether it’s coach or first class
Cos the girl I loved played a dirty trick on my heart
Now I’m going out west to give myself a kick-start

And I fish the final Lucky Strike out of my pocket
Take a nice, slow drag, I know this is what I’ll get
Have to savor the taste, before I step inside this old hotel
With a burnt out neon letter in the sign, I ring the bell
The night clerk has heard it all one hundred times before
Says check-out is ten and I’ll be staying on the third floor
Now my dreams aren’t dead, they’re merely in a coma
Here in this dirty little town somewhere in Oklahoma

Out west I waste a dime inside an antiquated phone booth
To make a call back east and see what’s left of my youth
But the line rings and there ain’t nobody around to answer
Head to a club to waste a few bills on a weathered dancer
Said she came out here twenty years ago and never made it
She held the bait out there and I said, honey, I’ve got to split
Now I’ve got myself a cheap suit and my hatful of sorrow
With an aim to board the first train out of here tomorrow

I generally avoid couplets like the plague, but this is the one that got the ball rolling again.

I've tried...more than once. I think it's pretty brutalized. Which is a shame...I used to write some pretty emotional stuff.

In fact - I think I'll fire up my laptop and read some of the more finished bits and fragments that I computerized (versus those I just left in my writing journals)

That's pretty depressing.

I think there's some trigger that would bring back creativity and emotion. You can't focus on the writing, you have to be more personal and reflective first, and then the writing will come. I actually don't really know what I'm talking about but that made sense to me just now to say.

Longfellow’s Pen (A descendant’s musing)

What came as easily as April showers
in New England to you, is a summer
in the Sahara for me.

I feel the words in my mind like dewdrops
on the desert wind, borne away by storm to burn
in morning’s light; and you, you are Kralizec

I see the road ahead of me
but it vanishes like water on the sand;
the dunes that seem a landmark one moment
are gone in the next when the wind passes by.

Your path is hidden beneath years of drifting pea-sand,
the trees that once circled a tiny pool reduced to shrubs
hiding on the windward side of dunes, clinging to life.
I am so lost in this desert, and there is little hope of rain.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Lover

Withered flowers, lie
scattered, like dust.
Crushed petals
neglected on the floor,
stalks ground away
with the passage
of time. Each day less
and less is left, and
only my memories remind me
how it used to be.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Faded

No longer do you occupy my dreams
the way you once occupied the bed beside me.
Lover.
The many bottles lie empty on the floor,
no recent additions on your behalf.

The scars that were once bright red
against my pale arms fade with time.
As does the desire to draw steel across flesh
and create rivers of red, to master loss through creation.

Thoughts that once sprung to mind unbidden
now require significant prodding. I have reclaimed
the idle moments from thoughts of you.
Yet somehow, you will always remain
the echoing footsteps in my empty hallway.

Yeah - it was pretty wild.

Dreamed I was a female singer and I was giving some big outdoor performance in like an amphitheater. Got shot by a sniper and died backstage after security pulled me back there. Cut to my disembodied "soul" being placed into a floating mushroomy-shaped organic storage pod in a field with a bunch of others where people would come to like...pay their respects. Very weird...very vivid...had it like 3x, and the details were the same each time, down to how my security guards looked.

I gave you my heart
and let you in,
thought I could
trust you
with
my heart:

I showed you the
strings to pull to make me dance
pointed out where
the cracks were showing,

then I left you alone,
forgot to change the lock
when you said we couldn’t be.

you brought him in,
and then, like old ugly glass,
you shattered my heart on
the floor, and made love
to him amongst the shards.
