I guess I'm alone in this but that's ok. As a Flames' fan, the Oilers are the biggest rival but I actually don't mind the Oilers. I completely dislike the Leafs but would still be cheering for Toronto if they were the last of the six... different strokes for different folks.

Would you prefer 1 stickied thread or a bunch of random threads throughout the board? After the Cup finals it will be un-stickied.

All right, the day has finally arrived...The Stanley Cup Finals are finally here!
It's time to throw out the predictions, and/or who you want to see win it. I want the Ducks to win, but I am picking the Devils. WHy? Because no hometown fan iss tupid enough to pick his own team in these things before the series starts. Do I think the Ducks can beat the Devils? Most definitely. But it really is a toss up, in my mind. I hope we get a good Cup finals. Go Ducks! Chief Rum

This one is very hard to call. Very hard. I didn't think the Ducks had much of a shot against either Detroit or Dallas. They whooped 'em both. So it's foolish to think the Ducks can't beat the Devils. The Devils are a beatable team.
Who do I want to win? The Ducks. Mainly twofold. 1) My friend's married to Keith Carney's cousin. They are close. Tenous connection as it gets. But, there you have it. 2) If the Devils win they will have won 3 Cups in the last 8 years. That comes close to Detroit's 3 Cups in the last 6 years. We don't want that. Petty, I know. Though at the end of the day it's hard to pick against the team with experience (Devils) and the leadership (Devils, Scott Stevens), I will pick the Ducks, and their hot goalie, in 6 games.

It's a shame what happened to this kid, I saw him play several times for Roseville HS and to get his future ripped from him for a illegal and extremely stupid hit sucks.

Such as? Felix Potvin? (he's Evil too, a Wings killer). Hmmm... Maybe they'll deal for Chechmanek? The free agent goalie crop is pretty bare this year and Lacroix has already sold of many of his young assets for other parts. Maybe they'll try to deal for Burke? Heh! I could get used to this. Pondering what the FoD will do next for a goalie... Given our luck, the Wings will shell some goalie, he'll get pissed, demand a trade, and the team will make some ridiculous deal shipping him to Denver. |

Well, Chechmanek is out there, and Phoenix should deal Burke, but maybe the should give Abescheier(sp) a shot too. I'm sure Av's fans are happy that Cujo was a FA last year, so they wouldn't get stuck with him!

I've never liked Roy, so I guess it's fitting that even his retirement should get me angry. We've all known he was going to retire - but he decides to announce it as the Stanley Cup finals get underway.
It's all about you, isn't it Patrick? Jerk.

Sad to see Patrick go...he was/is a stellar goalie..and to step away from 9 mil takes balls.
Perhaps the Avs will try to get Hasek out of the Czech republic....oooop's...forgot..he is a criminal now He can't leave the country. I do think it is time to give Abiescher a chance. As for the final...if the Ducks win it is because of Giggy...if they lose it is because of Giggy. Getting back to his form from 10 DAYS ago will be tough.I am reminded a bit of the Panthers from a few years ago....they surprisingly get to the cup final only to get hammered 4 straight.

Roy's arrogance is tough to take but I guess the best goalie to ever play deserves some slack. I'll never forget in 1993 when he was stoning Tomas Sandstrom left and right and after yet another save off the Swede, he gave Sandstrom a wink. Classic.
I don't think Colorado will want to trust their payroll to David Aeibischer (sp?). Burke is the likely target but it will take a lot to get him because Phoenix is moving into a new arena. Plus, Burke is injury prone so you never know. It will be interesting to see what the top payroll clubs do this off-season with 2004 lurking... |

I'd rather have Abeshier in net than Burke....
but i guess if they think they can make a run next season then Burke is the best they will be able to do. Jersey looked scary good tonight...Ducks looked rusty??...or did they just come back to earth?

What a horrible story. They really need to sit back and take a long look at what makes hockey a great sport. That sort of thing isn't it. Way to go Devils. I sort of feel bad for Giggy...as someone said earlier, if the Ducks win, it's because of him. If they lose, it's because of him. But he has made a believer out of a lot of people, no matter how this thing turns out. So long, Roy. You are a jerk, and a slimy human being, but a great goalie. Maybe the best. |

Wow....WTF is with Booby Clarke?
Does he have an ace up his sleeve?....a Khabibulin Ace...or a Burke ace? Otherwise he's fucked. Has anyone ever traded a possible Vezina trophy winner for a 2nd rounder before?

Sorry, I should have explained myself better.
I'm all for innovations to try and open up the game such as stricter enforcement of the rules, creating more opportunities for 4-on-4 play (not the whole game), removing the red line, adjusting goalie equipment, but I feel widening the nets goes too far and hurts the integrity of the game. With wider nets, many team and player records become obsolete. There are so many things that could be tweaked before we radically alter the game. Last edited by Karim : 05-29-2003 at 03:49 PM. |

My kneejerk reaction to the net idea is "no way". But given that goalies now are far bigger than they used to be (thanks to the equipment, baggy jerseys, etc.) and given that the odds of them forcing them to wear smaller stuff seems about zero... maybe it's worth a shot. I'm not saying soccer nets, but maybe an inch or two.
Would it help the quality of the game? Probably not much, considering you'd still have the trap, clutching and grabbing, and games where the shots or 19-12. Those games would just wind up being 3-1 instead of 1-0. |

Here are some proposed rule changes I heard discussed on a national radio program yesterday. The premise was that the game is fundamentally flawed and so several radical changes should be implemented together, primarily to increase the flow of the game, generate more scoring chances and to prevent coaches from being able to think solely about defence.
1. Reduce the size of goalie equipment. If a goalie wears a size 38 jersey, he is no longer allowed to wear a size 53. Also, reduce the size of the pads from 12" to 10". 2. Make all players use wooden sticks only. Goalies are afraid that a reduction in the size of their equipment will increase the frequency of injuries because of the use of composite sticks which enable players to get shots of quicker and with more velocity. Wooden sticks reduces the velocity but also encourages better stickhandling and passing. 3. Although wood, players could now have unlimited curves on the sticks. 4. Remove the redline and eliminate the two-line pass offside. 5. Increase the size of the net by a couple of inches. 6. Play 4-on-4 throughout the game. 7. No more OT during the regular season, just go straight to a shootout. No points for a tie, just wins and losses. The idea would be to force coaches that don't want a shootout to open it up and try and win it in regulation. Plus, shootouts are just damn exciting. Playoff OT would be 4-on-4. 8. Somehow mandate, if at all humanly possible, that the referees actually call penalties. 9. No more changes allowed after a whistle. This is where most of the line matching occurs so a defensive-minded coach can get his best checkers on to cover the star players. If changes were only allowed on the fly, there would be more risk of odd-man rushes for the coach who tries to line match. 10. Award points in the standings for goals. Either an extra point for getting over a certain threshold (3 goals), or a 1/2 point per goal scored. Make goals scored the number one tie-breaker in the standings. Thoughts? P.S. - For any Canadians who care, the remainder of the Finals is now in High-Definition on ABC. (Game 1 and 2 were also in HD but only on ESPN2 which we do not receive north of the border without a pirated signal.) |

Karim,
Thoughts on those ideas: 1.) This is only common sense and the league really does need to do this. 2.) I'm not too familiar with this, so I can't really comment on it. 3.) Not necessarily in favor of this. I don't think players right now are having a problem shooting, but that the goalies have too big of an advantage. 4.) I don't think they should get rid of the red line, I think it would lead to too many icings if the rule were gone. I do think getting rid of the two-line pass is a good idea. 5.) Not in favor of this; again, take the equipment advantage away from the goalies and things will start evening out. 6.) No no no no no. They will alienate just as many fans as they would hope to keep or grow. Not that they seem to give a shit about the traditional/hardcore hockey fan at the moment anyways. 7.) I guess I wouldn't be too opposed to a shootout in the regular season as long as it is kept as 5 on 5 for the playoffs. Might make things more exciting, and they would probably even themselves out over the course of a season anyways. 8.) Common sense, but I can't see how they can do it any better than they already do; maybe threaten the refs with suspension/termination but that would seem to hurt the league more than the refs in the long run. 9.) I think the sped-up faceoffs have really helped to take care of this problem for this season. 10.) Dumb. Something like that should be reserved for crappy second-rate leagues trying to differentiate themselves from the top. |
