You might be able to put them into a table in Word, change to "Sentence Case" and then move back into excel.

I don't see a sentence case option under format cells in Excel alone.

That's all I got.

Use the following:

=Proper("SMITH")

Of course repalce the actual name with the cell to make it do the whole sheet.

Got it. Thanks!

Next issue, albeit a less-significant one: Garcia, Martinez, Rodriguez, Hernandez, and Lopez are the #18, 20, 22, 29 and 32 names. Using this list is going to result in a few more Latino-sounding names than irl, methinks.

Has anyone asked Arlie yet? It's probably something like all the names get dumped into a giant array, duped by frequency (then picking a name is a simple random number against the size of the array), and the array has a 16-bit (65535) limit or somesuch. He ought to be able to tell us (or someone with VB knowledge might be able to answer what the max array size is).

Last season, the first time through I finished 8-4 and could easily have lost a few more. Resimming I went 11-1, with convincing wins over #1 FSU and #4 Notre Dame. Just from casually watching as the game sims I saw alot of teams that were +/- 3 or 4 wins from the prior sim.

I've done this before and yes the results do vary. I've done this in TPF, TCB, FOF, TCY, Madden, NHL 2K5 and OOTP.

I really don't get the point of the above post. 3 to 4 swing in either direction can be completely normal. For example, there were two games this year that USC could of lost and were behind late in the game and they are the top team in the nation.

A 10 and 2 team, could go 12 and 0 or 8 and 4 and I would think that would be pretty normal for any sim.

Quik's comment about not nearly enough names rings very true here. To be safe, I cut off the list at the first 3,525, the number used in the original table, leaving off soem not-too-ridiculous ones stuch as Lawless, Stephen, Spellman, Rogan, Canon, Manners, Kiley, Heywood, Lindell, Liston, Voyles and Railey, to name a few. When I can talk with Arlie, I'll check on the upper limit of names, but for now, I'll limit a new table to the original numbers, I think.

I guess that is probably the biggest challenage with using a list like this. The list is for the entire population, not just limited to people who play in different types of sports. Not sure how that could be really solved...

OK. First test. I did the last names. Upper limit is up to 335. Let's see how this works...

RTE70 upon league creation. We may be forced to stick with a much lower upper limit.

Looks like 2^7-1 is the limit. 128 didn't work. 127 did.

Who would have ever thought that "Irizarry" is more common in the U.S. than "Ireland" or "Irby" or "Hoyle" or "Hollins"?

OK. Now HERE'S an oddity. The dist.male.first list at the Census Bureau has FEWER names than are in BBCF's FirstName table.

Part of it is the existence of a "Short yardage QB" position on the depth chart. And I think part of it is still due to the high likelihood of a QB who is injured at all getting re-injured during the game.
Ding Ding!! Nail on the head!!

Upon further review, I agree with this. I can work around this for MY team by putting my #1 QB at the top slots in the depth chart and setting his playing time to 100% - BUT what about the AI teams who do this? I can't wait to take a look around at some elite QBs and see if they are splitting time between the #2 and #3 QBs.

Gamekiller, or an injured QB?

I suspect that was an injured QB. I've seen the elite QB's put up some great numbers and clearly get a large portion (if not all) of their team's snaps.

Ok, I was wrong and after looking through the logs their #1 is just injured all the time. I will delete that part of the post and will look some more tomorrow or later today.

SkyDog, if I'd caught this thread an hour ago, I would have e-mailed you the names file I created from the 1990 Census and saved you the effort. I could still send it along if you'd like. I used the same tactics... take a census listing, use Excel to change the all-upper-case format and convert the weights into integer values, and then paste the .csv over to a firstname/lastname text file.

I have a lastname file with 25,000 names that runs successfully. It had 50,000 initially, but crashed at that length, so the limit is somewhere in the middle... I'd guess a standard binary limit at 32,000.

Note that a long last names file will significantly increase processing time at league creation and whenever recruits are generated.

Hmmmmmm...FirstNames is FAR more flexible than LastNames. I set up the FirstName table with exact frequencies, and it works fine, ranging all the way up to 829 for James and 817 for John. Go figger...

Did your frequencies work out with LastNames?

I'd still love a copy of that .csv if it works.

I don't think I tried frequencies above the 100-120 range. I currently have Smith at 101.

I'll send the files along to you. You may wish to tweak them some for frequency or ethnicity... I just used the frequencies from the census list without major modification.

I'm an idiot. I was getting the RTE because I was trying to create a league with the pstats file still open in Access.

I think I stated the point very clearly--what part didn't you understand? Do you find it inconceivable that the results could be more random than they should? Does that for some reason seem unimportant to you?

A swing of a few games one way or another is to be expected, but from what I've seen resimming several seasons, it just seemed more random than it should be--maybe it's not. The real problem is in determining what is to random as we can't exactly resim real life a dozen times for comparison. As for comparing the variation to pro games, college football doesn't have anywhere near that level of parity so results shouldn't be as varied.

For the first time I had to really scratch my head about the all-conference selections for the WAC in my 4th season.

1st team TE: 12 rec, 251 yds, 3 TD's, 2 KRB
2nd team TE: 4 rec, 38 yds, 2 TD's, 1 game played (this guy is my backup TE)
3rd team TE: 12 rec, 126 ydsm 2 TD's

my starting TE: 21 rec, 322 yds, 1 TD, 5 PCK

If you want the files, to be copied onto the FirstName and LastName tables, here are the links:

http://www.younglifenorthlake.com/fo...firstnames.csv
http://www.younglifenorthlake.com/fo...flastnames.csv

For the first names, snce there are fewer on the census table than in the BBCF table, I deleted the "extras." The last names list has the exact number of last names in BBCF's original list.

This is probably a stupid question:

Will that affect future recruits, or would I have to start a new career to get the benefits of those tables?

In order to make any changes work for a current career, you need to edit the appropriate tables in your savegame folder in setup.dat and stats.dat. That being said, with the FirstNames table having fewer records, switching it out in a current career will cause a crash. I *think* (haven't tried it) switching out tables of same length would work, but players' names would all change, since the name id's are different.

Impressive. I can't wait for 1.04. I hope it works well with previous careers.

A quibble I have run into with recruiting is that I do not fill my schoalrship quota by the end of the recruiting period, and the AI then awards scholarships at positions I didn't need/want. Am I doing something wrong, or is this random (or based on interest)?

I've seen this as well. I typically cut the guys so I can use the scholarship the next year.

Is there a way to give a scholarship to a walk-on who has received playing time and deserves it? I've looked, but I wonder if I'm missing it.

In more than a dozen years total I've only got one transfer. That occurred after I got to about 65 prestige with UNC and decided to go after a few guys that had "Low" interest in my school in addition to the guys that had "Very High" interest. Maybe the interest isn't displaying right?

I've held off commenting until I had time to play for a while. I'm not a stathead so my comments focus elsewhere. Some of my problems have already been addressed, but I'm going to include the whole list that I've been compiling. Before start I need to give Arles a lot of credit. Even with some big problems I'm still playing this game. Its a huge step forward for his work and I think it has the potential to be a great game.

BIG PROBLEMS

The transfer system is messed up. I've had Sophomores that would have been starters transfer. Way too many top recrutis transfer

I have never seen any transfer have anything higher than low interest in my school. Even when I had no kicker I couldn't generate any interest from a 4 star kicker transferring from Ohio State

The suggested lineup should match the medical staff advice. I can correct this, but I'm assuming that computer teams are playing doubtful guys regularly

The primary offense and defense can change every year. I know that schools can alter the approach, but the preferences of the coordinators are goign to dominate. Teams just don't change offensive and defensive philosophies regularly

Way too many academic ineligibles. I've lost five starters to academics at one time. This just never happens. If Ohio State lost Hawk, Smith, Mangold, Ginn and Kudla all at once for academic reasons it would be a huge story and Tressel would be gone. Football programs make it very difficult for students to be ineligible. I don't mind occasional problems, in fact I like the idea, but its too prevelent right now

I don't know if this is something that I'm messing up, but I repeatedly have boosts in the budget but end up with less on the set budget screen than the year before. Is the coach salary going up? I'm not sure what the problem is, but I hate to lower my scouting budget when I supposedly got a boost to the budget.

MEDIUM PROBLEMS

The delete league function doesn't seem to work at all

I see too many mid-major level All-Americans. Its not unusual for there to be four or more mid-majors on offense and defense first teams

An alphabetical order for award/transfer/goign pro emails is less effective than alphabetical by school. I don't always remember all the names and I've missed them on the email

The coordinators that have salaries over 600,000 often don't get work because of team budgets. The inflation of salaries for the top coordinators seems to leave a lot of them unemployed

Too many mid-majors in the top twenty five. This is really only a problem in that two or more from the same conference are getting in. I saw three MAC teams in the top twenty in one career. Its very hard for the small conferences to get more than one team in the top twenty five. If prestige isn't a factor in the polls maybe it should be

I would love to see the team expectations screen before I select a team to coach. I don't know if this is possible given the order of league generation, but it would be a huge help when trying to decide on an unfamiliar team

Every time I've change position, probably ten or twelve, the ratings have sucked. I've never had higher than 1.5 potential even if I'm told that they will be good or very good. I've had enough bad luck that I don't ever change positions anymore

Potential ratings for coordinators would be a big enhancement. I don't know if they improve, but having some idea, especially for small schools, of what young guys could become would be nice. Right now after a couple of season if a small school losses their coordinator they are bound to have someone crappy

Is there a way to see recruit commitments only for a single school? I can see the player cards of my recruits if I use recruited/no hide commitments, but that gives me a huge list. I want a way to see my committeds easily

I had a 3 star QB reject my last scholarship in the last week of recruiting but then join the team as a wlk-on. That shouldn't happen

LITTLE PROBLEMS

A small error on the expectation page where it says something like "DC can be flexible..." It should start with THE

As has been mentioned the name file isn't very good. I had starting safeties of Nagurski and Houshmanzadeh

The default off-season text for players seems to be Concerned about team's play

Is there a way to add the spread option as an offensive choice? Its so hot right now that it seems a big loss that its not there

I would love to see the expectations page for other teams

When a recruit has a long last name the position gets cut off the player card

The athlete marker should stay with the player after they are recruited. (Of course if the change position stats don't change I guess this doesn't matter)

How is the coach experince generated and what does it mean? I've seen thirty something year old coaches with 12+ years of experience. Does that mean they've been a coordinator since their early twenties?

Again, this is a very good product that I'm very haapy with. I hope these problems can be fixed and I hope the college basketball game is this good. ( If I ever have time to play it!!!)

I got pretty tired of not getting transfers so I put it on AI usage. They dont even offer now.

That *should* change in 1.04, with recruits making decisions earlier. What happens is that if you don't use up all your available schollies, they get offered to players on your watch list.

Arkansas State popped up on my schedule at the beginning of the year. That's twice in a row that I've been given a 12th game that wrecked my SOS.

I'm not sure whether this is a question about BBCF, or about "strength of schedule" measurements generally...

But is there any circumstance where adding a weak team (I'm not talking about replacing a good one with them but simply adding one more team on top) and beating them appropriately should actually *reduce* your position in this sort of ranking?

I don't know enough to know if (a) what you say actually happens in your BBCF game; and (b) this really is how things work in BBCF, and (c) this is not how it works in real life college football... but if all three are true, then it's a concern for this game. If this really is how it works in real college football, that's just absurd (but of course it ceases to be a concern that the game is incorrectly applying the concept).

Lovely. Heading into the ACC championship I get another RTE 55. Can't remember the last time I saved.

I haven't really looked into it, but I do know that I never move up in the polls after beating a bad team, regardless of what happens to the teams in front of me. And I rarely move down more than a slot or two after losing to a good team.

As far as the computers go, I think it would be a matter of blowing out the team by a large enough margin to have the boost to your MOV offset the knock to your SOS. With the polls as they are in the game, it's certainly no better than a bye week and perhaps worse. Either way, I'd rather not have games inexplicably popping up on my schedule.

You can, click on "team info" and then at the bottom select whatever team you want.

Can anyone else confirm that the defense "override" (when the AI selects a different defense from the one you've selected with play calling is enabled) seems much more prevalent when you call Nickel defenses? I know I've seen it elsewhere but it is downright common in Nickel.
