oh, and the new Sens logo has been leaked

someone did a sidebyside comparison of new one vs old one

general consensus (and I agree) is that it's better than the last one, but still not as good as the original one.

We will all mourn the loss of the Senators' cross-eyed logo guy.

Yes. The division wasn't great the last two years and after the fire sale in Nashville, it's even worse.

Nashville is a shell of its former self.

Tkachuk wasn't enough to get the Blues anywhere and adding Kariya isn't enough.

The Blackhawks top scoring line of the chronically injured Havlat, Robert Lang, and Sergei Samsonov, wont scare anybody. They are still a few years away.

The Bluejackets were horrible last year and did nothing to improve themselves.

The Wings play those teams 32 times this season. That's almost 40% of their entire schedule.

I really hope one of these teams surprises me and makes a good run.

I actually think Columbus, Chicago and St Louis all could be improved this year. Not going to win the division, but they could all surprise.

Out of necessity, Columbus and Chicago must improve. They can't get any worse.

Every time I see a Senators logo, I remember this old friend of mine (who was living in Detroit and a Wings' fan) who bought not one, but two Ottawa Senators jerseys either before they started playing or during their first season.

He even went so far as to get a name and number stitched on the back. He had a "Sylvain Turgeon" jersey and a "Norm MacIver" jersey. The reason he got those two? Because they were Ottawa's best players in EA Sports NHL.

I have fond memories of the Senators in NHL 93, back when EA gave realistic ratings instead of making sure everyone was at least a 70. They had three of their six defencemen rated a "2", including Darren Rumble.

If this isn't rock bottom, what is? Seriously, if the Devils were that bad, I'd light myself on fire while I thought of a way to properly punish myself.

Can I light the match? It would be great to have the Devils as cellar dwellars for awhile.

2006-07 Chicago 31-42-9 71
2005-06 Chicago 26-43-13 65
2004-05 Chicago 20-43-11-8 59

Ok, so there's a slight improvement. Still, I don't want to be lighting myself on fire.

Just terrible planning, as all of America would rather see a meaningless bowl game on January 1st than a hockey game.

Heh. I actually got a Sens replica jersey during their first year or so of existence. I thought the logo looked cool and I was on an expansion team kick in terms of choosing favorites. Growing up in NC meant we didn't have pro sports teams locally until the Hornets came in 1988 and I totally rebelled against the "local" teams in Atlanta and Washington, typically. This lead to exotic mixtures of rooting interests like the expansion Rockies and Sens along with not-very-local teams like the Bears. However, since Charlotte and Raleigh now have pro teams in all sports aside from baseball, only the Rockies have retained their spot as favorite team for a given sport.

Interestingly enough, a couple of years later while walking to class on campus at State, another student noticed me wearing the Sens jersey and chatted me up about it. Ah, the heady days of Alexander Daigle. Good times.

I have to become the coach. This has to happen. Colin White will only play 8 minutes per game, Paul Martin will play 45 minutes per game, Kevin Weekes will shine my shoes to keep busy, and Brian Gionta will be allowed to do whatever the hell he wants because he's sexy.

Pumpy, can I suggest you freshen up your resume about the first week of April...just in case Lou wakes up cranky one morning.

Are any teams doing any drastic logo changes? I'm talking drastic, like Gorton's Fisherman drastic.

Tampa Bay and Vancouver are the two biggest candidates for big logo changes. It sounds like Dallas is going to have a significant change in jersey style. Most every thing else (that hasn't been unveiled already) seems like minor tweaks (think: Boston) over wholesale changes (Capitals).

Meh, so long as it's 2-3 years for no more than 6 per, it's not a bad deal. We've got lots of cap room to play with and really need offense from the blue line, especially on the PP. Any longer and I won't be as much of a fan though as we need to make room for some of the kids coming up in addition to Pitkanen, Smid, Greene and Staios. Definitely looks like Gilbert will spend the year in the AHL, though I'm really wondering if Grebeshkov ends up on the club as anything more than the #7 barring some sort of trade at this point.

Top 7 right now would look something like Souray/Pitkanen | Smid/Staios | Greene/Tarnstrom | Grebeshkov (disclaimer, not actual pairings as we'll want some defense on that top pairing as well)

Not bad, was scared he'd come out at over 6 million per. If the cap goes up at least one or two more times before evening out, that's not a bad deal.

Anybody want in on when the Oilers announce a trade at this point? My opinion is that Lowe is trying to get a blockbuster done before the season starts, but I'm not sure at this point in the game how much action he'll get. Assuming at this point that his offers start off with a defenseman (Greene/Smid/Gilbert/Syvret) a prospect forward (Pouliot/Cogliano/Schremp) another player of some sort depending on the needs of the trading partner and a variable number of picks.

Ideally, I'd love to see a package of Horcoff, Gilbert, Cogliano, ? plus a couple high picks for a 1st line LW sooner rather than later, but expect something more like Greene, Pouliot, Jacques and a pick or two for a 1st/2nd line tweener LW if it's done prior to the season starting.

In the end though, while I'd love to see a trade before camp starts, I'm expecting to have to wait until the new year for a *big* deal to hit, probably a month or so before the deadline.

Sounds good. Canes have been in need of another center and this had been speculated for a bit. Hopefully it'll be a case of both pieces being better together than they were apart.

It only works as a salary dump, even though I had heard that with Lundqvist re-signed and Hossa and Avery given their expected raises, we would've been right in line with the cap so keeping Cullen would've worked. And if it did, I feel like it would've made more sense to deal him during the season.

When we signed Drury and Gomez, I was really happy about getting them, but a nice benefit to it would be to put Cullen on the 3rd line where he belongs. Now we threw that away. Hopefully something else is planned.

If he comes out, they'd want to play up the "a gay player was an NHL tough guy" angle. And that means somebody would need to dig up footage of him fighting. Can you imagine a tougher job than being the guy who has to find Matthew Barnaby fight footage where he's not getting destroyed?

Has there ever been an NHL "tough guy" with a worse record than Barnaby? Even Rob Ray won one or two a year.
