I'm not sure it's a lack of talent. Some of them are actually good/decent (Unoriginal Chris, Huge Mandisa, Tourette's Taylor, Quasimodo Elliot) but the songs they picked for the recent episode and the arrangements were just horrible. I think Simon hit it on the head when he called it indulgent.
It looks like the contestents just really need to be kept on a really tight rein in terms of song choices so that they can perform decently. |

I find it funny how the judges place such an important emphasis on youth, and pick all these 16 year olds to be in the competition.... but then rip into them every time they make song choice mistakes. I much prefer Rockstar where they seemed to have picked singers that were a bit older but much more experienced. They knew who they were, knew what they did well and were good performers. At their worst, they were better than most of these AI contestants are at their best. |

I actually thought Bucky was good last week. Obviously, he can't sing. But, to his credit, he is picking popular songs by artists who didn't really "sing" all that much/well, at least not in the songs he is picking.

I think Bucky gets super "exposed" this week since it is a country themed week. When everyone is singing country, it will become that much more obvious how bad he is. Speaking of which, as a fan of country music, I'm very curious to see the song selection - particularly by the guys.

Well, my thought was that it will be "easier" for the girls... The reason I say this is they can just pick some Faith Hill, Sarah Evans, LeAnn Womack, etc. ballad and sing... they don't have to really be "country" so much as the guys will be forced to do.. me and my better half were discussing some choices that might fit.. .just to share we were thinking.. Ace: Tim McGraw - Don't take the girl Taylor: I think we said maybe some Bocephus Bucky: who cares? Chris: This one was interesting to me.. at first I thought he was in trouble, then I realized he could do like maybe Brooks and Dunn or perhaps Montgomery Gentry... a group that's a little rockier at times... maybe even Garth Brooks Elliott: I think he could have the most trouble depending on song choice, but maybe like Clint Black or George Strait based on "style", but good god, he doesn't want to be compared to them...

Wednesday night's show will have a performance by Kenny Rogers.
I kind of like them having special guests every week, as they have stopped those horrible group performances. |

Should be worth watching just to stare at amazement at how much plastic surgery he's had. He's had so much that he'd have no chance in a Kenny Rogers lookalike competition. Last edited by Critch : 04-04-2006 at 07:32 AM. |

Kenny definitely no longer looks like himself. Critch nailed it. He made an appearance on the latest version of Nashville Star last week. Or at least they told us the guy was Kenny Rogers.

Oh, I love Kenny Rogers. He is an amazing singer, and he looks great, plastic surgery or not.
And Ace is doing great, this is a terrific song. Whoever said they wanted to see who bombed a Leanne Rimes song.. Paris did awesome with it. Last edited by LoneStarGirl : 04-04-2006 at 07:32 PM. |

Kenny looks very, very wierd. Though with that voice, he is easy to pick out from a crowd.

Bucky nailed the last song. Perfect rendition of Gary Allen's version of "The Best I Ever Had". My best of the night (being a country fan), nudging Katherine.

Maybe you can answer this for me...I'm almost positive that the line in the Vertical Horizon song is "You're only the best I ever had." Bucky kept singing "You're just the best I ever had." Did he mess it up, or was that how the original went? Or am I completely wrong? |

This is always my most difficult week. I don't much like country music. I would probably do better with folk songs, or disco, or even rap.
I think the judges agree. About halfway through the show, Simon just decided to check out and give everyone a pass. Paula had the good meds again. About five years from now, we're going to read somewhere that she has absolutely no memory of American Idol. Frankly, I'm surprised they still put her on the air. It's embarrassing. Meanwhile, Kenny Rogers looks like he has aged a lot since he joined the Tigers. Wouldn't Bronson Arroyo have been a better choice? Or maybe Jack McDowell? On to the Solecismic Ratings, country week: 1. Kellie Pickler. This was the tone that sounded so good six weeks ago and has been missing ever since. Yeah, I'm not buying the salmon bit either, but she hit the subtleties of the song very well and was comfortable performing. If you belong here at all, you have to do very well in your own genre, and she did. She at least showed she belongs in the competition. Score of 90. 2. Elliott Yamin. I thought it was a very solid vocal performance, though, as usual, he goes through patches where he seems overwhelmed by the pressure. Score of 86. 3. Katharine McPhee. Is it just me, or is she getting smaller every week? I hear she's quite internet savvy, and was stung by the comments a few weeks back that she appeared pregnant. Probably comments made by people who wouldn't know a sexy woman if she rubbed her magnificent body all over them. And she sang, too. There were pieces of that song that were the best pieces of the night, by far. But the arrangement was iffy. Score of 79. 4. Ace Young. He was a lot better tonight. And that will mean a lot to his fans, since he's had two wretched weeks in the last three. The song was a little too soft, a little too safe for his personal strengths. Score of 74. 5. Chris Daughtry. A decent rendition of a simple song. I was bored. Very, very bored. Score of 73. 6. Mandisa Hundley. She was really struggling with a lot of the song, especially the lower notes at the beginning. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't very impressed. She is sinking like a stone in this competition. Score of 70. 7. Taylor Hicks. I know he was trying to appeal to a wider audience tonight, but he looked like he was enjoying himself about as much as I enjoy taking out the garbage. It was an easy song, and he was okay, but it was completely lifeless. Score of 66. 8. Paris Bennett. That was a disaster. She looked like she was having a pouty 16-year-old's fit after being told she had to sing a country song. She is definitely one who has trouble going out side her admittedly wide comfort zone. Score of 58. 9. Bucky Covington. He does have trouble enunciating. And singing. It's really ay a point now where we have eight people who can sing, and we have Bucky. Score of 47. Who's the bottom three: Mandisa might have a big scare this week. Elliott is not picking up fans. Paris will lose support after a dreadful performance. Because this is country week, country fans will rally around the southerners and keep Bucky safe. Who's going home: Elliott admitted he doesn't have a lot of confidence. That's just not a good idea. I think his support is waning. Who should go home: Bucky. |

She's safe. I tried voting for the first time this season. It took me 19 tries to get past a busy signal. In the midst of that, I threw in three votes for Elliott on three tries. Dialidol indicates she's safe this week, too. |

I am sorry...I just can't help myself. Can we PLEASE vote on Ryan. That boy has just GOT to go. The whole ridiculous Rryan vs. Simon thing that only Ryan has bought into is getting old. (of course, it is probably Simon's idea to play to what he perceives as the stupid masses--sadly, I am not sure that it is a bad strategy)

Kenny Rogers looked so bad, I thought he was a cross between Kevorkian and Marshall Applewhite (the Heaven's Gate cult leader). Honestly, when I heard the voice it sounded like him, but I still didn't recognize him. I'm getting old.
