10.3 Larry Playfiar (Big Hitter) - Buffalo, Los Angeles

Larry Playfair was one of the toughest blue liners in recent history of the NHL. It didn't take long for this punishing hitter and great fighter to have his opponents avoiding him.

Larry led the Sabres in penalty minutes for six straight seasons (1979-85) and was the Sabre nobody wanted to mess with. He was the first Sabre to reach the 1000 penalty minute mark in a career as well as the first to break the 200 PIM plateau in one season, which he did twice. He also set a club record for most PIMs in one season, 258 in 81-82.

Larry will not be remembered for any offensive flare but rather for his punishing hits and heavy blows with his fists. He was a fierce competitor who earned every minute and shift in the NHL.

I fully expected a lot of Oilers to go in this draft, just not necessarily the one's that ended up getting picked. Really enjoyed watching the progression of picks and how the rules really end up impacting strategies. A lot more interesting conversation (imho) than if the team restrictions didn't exist, should make the final voting a lot of fun.

Looking back I question a number of my moves, particularly the early ones.

I believe I left all the following teams on the table:

New Jersey
Carolina
Ottawa
Washington
New York Islanders
Tampa Bay
San Jose
Calgary
Dallas
Nashville
Phoenix
Chicago
Columbus

Most are expansion teams, but not one player from the Blackhawks? Come on...

This is the first player drafted that I have absolutely never even heard of. Time to head to wikipedia...

The more I think about it, the more I suspect that this is the first draft that somebody could come in at the very end and, using only players that hadn't been chosen, build a better team than anybody drafted.

The advantage of being able to slot everyone exactly without worrying about other teams picks would be enough to offset the smaller player pool.

Wow, he played 16 years! I know I was only 13 when he retired, but you'd think I'd have at least had a hockey card or sticker of him. How the heck do I not remember this guy?

Wow! A guy that played for 5 teams, including 2 Original Six, in the last round! I'm voting for Taz just for that pick.

I have all my fingers. I was cutting some rope with scissors and they slipped and sliced my left hand on the index finger knuckle...the one where you make a fist. I didnt notice at first but when I saw a red hand in blood i knew something was up. I also knew when I could actually see the bone I was even in more trouble. But I credit my immense knowledge of medicine from watching ER and Grey Anatomy from me going to the actual ER to get stitches.

Don't buy this...he punched a wall about 7 minutes into the Pens-Flyers game yesterday.

Unlike that 8-2 pounding the Flyers put on Pittsburgh in December, Therrien showed Stevens how to play with some class

Actually, I am a little shocked the Flyers didn't start running around a little more-- Laraque served game one of his 3 game suspension yesterday.

10.7 Barry Melrose - LA - coach

Yeah, he only coached 3 seasons, and sure his one Finals appearance was on the coattails of Gretzky. But, there is nothing more hockey than mullets, and Melrose sports, hands down, the best mullet of any coach, of any sport, in the history of organized sports. That alone should put this pick over the top.

I chalk that up to either-

1) Most hockey experts agree Fleury's best attribute are his quick relfexes.

2) Cote can't skate that far.

Screw it, I can't think of anyone good.

10.8 Adam Foote, hitter. (COL, CBJ)

I managed to save about 15 teams for next time.

That's ok, with Bouwmeester as his lockdown defenseman we're not too worried.

If I'm not officially DQ'd yet, swap Worrell out and put Scott Parker in at enforcer (Colorado - available without Worrell, San Jose).

You've been struggling over this one for a long, long time...

Other than a few obvious choices, it's a really hard category to fill.

I think Adam Foote is a really good choice for big hitter. He doesn't provide the highlight reel hits like Stevens, but he is just a big, punishing bastard of a defenceman. Especially if you consider cross-checks in the crease to be hits, then he really moves up the list.

Great job, Brian. Thanks for organizing. It was a lot of fun.

Patrick Roy wanted me to tell everyone that his team is the best and the rest of you suck. Bobby Clarke would like to take this opportunity to slash your ankles. And Chris Pronger asks that you kindly step aside before he is forced to stomp you. After which he will, of course, apologize.

Really surprised to see that nobody picked Joe Thornton, even though he would have fit well in a few categories and only played for two teams.

there are alot of guys who only played 1 year for a certain franchise.

I think the oly rule change I would have made was maybe you could pick a guy if he only played one year for a certain team.
