It's only his third season. When he was 12, he decided he finally wanted to learn how to skate. We'd tried him on some skating lessons when he was 4 and a half but he hated it. After about a month, he'd stare at the ads on the board and refuse to try to take a step. We didn't force it back then and actually, were kinda relieved not to have to live the life of hockey parents. Then, as I said, he decided four or five years ago that he wanted to skate. He was playing football in high school back then. The previous Summer, he'd taken much of his allowance money to buy a street hockey goalie kit, pads, gloves, mask, chest protector, the works. He burned that kit on the street that Summer.

Then, around December or January, he asked us if he wanted to, if he could play hockey, in a league. Woah was our response. We set some goals to achieve in school and he reached them all, I had never seen him so motivated to do something in his life, not even him getting his black belt.

We got to Summer of 2011, we got a deal on some intermediate size, middle quality gear, all new. Cost us around $1700 to suit him up. Paid him some private lessons with a goalie coach, then some goalie camp, he was simply eating it up. A day with some hockey is a perfect day for him. So yeah, some money, but he'd never played before...

After only one season, his goalie coach told him there was an opening in his high school hockey/study program. It's a program we have here where kids go to regular school fivw mornings a week and Wednesday afternoon but on the other four afternoons, they participate in a sport or language, or art of their choice. Andrew had been in that program as part of the advanced English learning group (remember, French is our first language

) and he was looking to make some change. He's been having a ball for the last couple seasons.

He paid for his current kit himself, the CCM pads/gloves that he's wearing on the pictures. Those CCM Flex are of the variety just under pro and are selling for about $1350. Other than changing his mask this season, we have not had to spend too much for equipment. And even the mask, we told him we'd pay for the basic model and if he wanted to upgrade, he had to pay the difference, which he did.

You wouldn't tell he's only a 3rd year goalie though. He's been getting tons of shot and is often the sole reason why his team stays in games. He was named MVP of a tournament in both their tournament this season, the only player to get double mentions on the team. To tell ya, he allowed 8 goals in 3 games in that tournament. Lost 2-0, then tied twice 3-3 and didn't make it out of the preliminary round. Of those 8 goals, two were fluky goals deflected behind him by one of his defensemen.

He's a technical goalie, certainly not as intuitive as a kid who'd been goaltending since he was 5. We just love to watch him play but god is it stressful. Seriously, the life of the parents of a goalie is not an easy one. One bad goal simply kills whatever crazy miracle saves he's done all game long to save his teammates's butt.

thanks, got no merit other than picking them out of the bunch and paying for them.

They had a professional photographer who was taking pictures during our first two games. Went through the list of players twice and we picked through maybe 15 or 20 pics, stopping at 5

I'd post a picture of my daughter's first day of four year old kindergarten in her little uniform, but then I'd have to post pictures of the vomit. Feel so bad for her. She said her tummy hurt when she woke up and she didn't eat much, but she was just so excited to go.

1 day of school, 1 absence. Good start.
