Same thing basically.

I was just arguing the post about him being reinstated because it made it sound like he was reinstated effective immediately, which would make tonight even crazier in Green Bay with a packed Lambeau Field.

Trade him to the Dolphins for a 7th round choice, that would be fair imo.

ESPN - NFL grants Favre reinstatement; sources say QB job is open - NFL

Sources told Wendi Nix that McCarthy will announce an open competition at QB. If it's true it means Favre will win his old job back.

I have a feeling Favre will start, but Rodgers will see playing time throughout a game. I'd stay far away from either in a fantasy draft situation.

This seals the Brian Brohm era in GB I'd assume. If Favre starts and plays even 80% of the snaps, how can they re-sign Rodgers or even franchise him without knowing what the hell he is capable of? This will be the last straw in that regard as I doubt he even would want to re-sign there now.

I always thought the Packers would cave, I just didn't think it would happen this fast. They have messed with Rodgers' head too much now, I see no way he becomes the starting QB in GB.

Rodgers is signed through 2009.

What a mess. I definitely feel for the Packers fans if Favre were to remain a Packer all season long. Favre may be able to generate the most wins this year but it'll be a complete circus and the future of QB totally up in the air, with two potentially competent QBs tossed to the side for the Favre show.

No way. Favre won't accept that, and neither will fans. First time a Rodgers drive blows a game (and you know it will happen), the media and fans will crucify Green Bay coaches and management.

Oh that would be beautiful. Then, the day after his trade goes through, Favre decides that he really did want to be retired and walks away. Perfect! As a Cowboys fan, I'm sitting here watching this tale unfold and extremely glad the spotlight is on another team. The less we are in the press, the better IMHO.

They did that last week but the only teams on the list were Minnesota and Chicago. Heck, the Packers were going as low as a 3rd to a team in the AFC and there were no takers.

In the end, Favre will probably try to come back in this "open competition" and look like complete dog sh*t in camp. Rodgers will start and Favre will eventually retire again before the season starts. They've changed the offense for Rodgers, Aaron has gotten all the snaps and the team has committed to him. Favre will get a chance, but it's Rodgers' job to lose. And, I don't see him losing it to a 39-year old who's been throwing to high school kids for the last 3 weeks with no other offseason work.

All that said, I picked up Favre in my fantasy league just in case

Going to be interesting. Glad I am home for this and have other stuff to keep me occupied and not sitting in a truck where I am listening to NFL Radio 12 hours a day which would have led to my head exploding by now.

Honestly, why stop at a third. Move him for a 7, if you're convinced you want to go with Rodgers, and definitely willing to move him, so long as he's not playing in your conference or division or screwing with your team.

He has to agree to a trade, and what AFC team would give up anything for him? Maybe the Jets, but Favre would have to be convinced they can win now, which is a tough sell.

So the choices are trade him to the Vikings/Buccs, cut him (and he'll sign with the Vikings/Buccs), or keep him.

I wouldn't be shocked if Rodgers wins the job right before the season starts - the Packers will hope that Favre retires at that point, but even if he doesn't and they decide to cut him, it's questionable whether the Vikings or Buccs could throw hin right into a new offense with no training camp.

I would guess just about every team in the AFC would trade a 7th for him, bar none (except in situations where they simply can't fit him under the cap).

And Favre's opinions won't matter--only a team with a shot will try to trade for him (but all of said teams in AFC will).

The saga continues....

Source says Packers contacted Vikings about trade for Favre

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers welcomed back quarterback Brett Favre from the reserve-retired list Sunday knowing full well that they've already taken the first step toward trading him to the Minnesota Vikings.

The reports say the Vikings were contacted on Friday, which is like a year ago in this soap opera. With the announcement of an open competition Favre may still be traded because the competition is bogus and Favre had no real shot, but Favre wouldn't be traded until right before week 1, so Favre wouldn't be an option to start for the Vikings against the Packers.

With as mediocre as the QBs looked in the family night scrimmage, they better do an open competition.

As for contacting the Vikings about a trade, I'd put that under doing your homework.

Lets be honest here, it's only Minnesota that Favre cares about.

We also need to be honest, the Packers aren't carrying Favre as a backup this year. So this is a sham in one of three ways.

1) The Packers expect Favre to win the job and aren't nearly as happy with Rodgers as what they've been saying.

2) Rodgers is starting and Favre is released after the final preseason game.

3) Favre is traded to the Vikings today.

I know most people think #2 is the way to go. I think that's a pretty bad idea. You create a media circus for a month and you take the chance that Favre outplays Rodgers in the preseason. Favre is coming to camp pissed off, with a chip on his shoulder. And lets be honest, he's the better QB right now. (maybe not three years from now, but he's coming off of a pro bowl season with the same supporting cast)

I still put the odds at 70/30 that he's traded away today or tomorrow. I just don't see the Packers wanting to continue with the circus and I think it's dangerous for them to take the path they are talking about unless they plan on Brett starting opening night.

Case closed: Vikings didn't tamper with Favre

MANKATO, Minn. — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled that contact between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre this summer did not violate league tampering rules.

New info about last night's meeting between Favre and McCarthy from Jay Glazer:

Quote:
Pack, Favre moving closer to the edge

Brett Favre's Packers career appears exactly as it has over the last several months, at best in limbo, at worst over. After hours of meetings and few if any details emerging, it now seems less and less likely that Favre will be back on the playing field for the Packers, FOXSports.com has learned.

The two sides are expected to meet again in the morning as they try to work toward a solution palatable to both sides. However, one detail FOXSports.com gathered from the meeting was Favre's insistence that he did not want his presence to destroy the team's chemistry. In fact, Favre was adamant that he wanted to do what was in the best interest of the locker room and admitted this distraction was not what his teammates needed.

Another agreement from the meeting was that, despite reports to the contrary, there would not be an open quarterback competition as even Favre felt this would not be in the best interests of the locker room. Thus, Aaron Rodgers is the team's starting quarterback.

As Favre met with head coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson late Monday, the sides were moving toward an agreement to end this circus, but uncertainty remained about what that agreement ultimately will be.

Favre and the team continued to hold the same viewpoints they've held for weeks but rather than continuing their stalemate, they have joined in pursuit of a mutually agreeable solution. Whether that solution will entail a trade, a release or another option was not determined in the meeting.

Favre, however, stood to his long-standing desire to stay within the division. But the Packers were still hoping to find another option.

Favre now has to truly decide if he wants to play football for one of the two teams that have shown interest — the Jets and the Bucs — or continue to push for a solution that does not appear to be viable to the Packers.

The two sides aired grievances and actually had amicable talks. In fact, McCarthy and Favre met for so long the coach was unable to attend his scheduled team meeting and chose to cancel his press conference rather than address the media before having an opportunity to meet with his players.

Thompson and Favre then met at about 11 p.m. local time as the two tried to come to determine what their next step would be.

While they did not find an answer to a situation that has become stressful to all involved, at least all parties now appear to agree that this situation must soon come to a workable conclusion.
