Grant's memoirs isn't the first thing to read, but it is an exceptional piece of writing.

I've now seen at least three different times Trump looked at the sun including one where he took off his glasses to do so.

Wow, coordinating military, diplomatic and economic power! Who but Trump could have ever thought of that?

I thought Trump was against getting more involved in these middle east quagmires. Isn't that a reason people voted for him?

Who will have the courage to leave?

Not Bush or Obama and now not Trump.

This guy will be joining the Trump administration soon I think:

Idaho state rep shares conspiracy theory accusing Obama of staging Charlottesville

In hindsight, we should have left once Bin Laden was dead. That was the whole reason we gave a damn about that craphole. The British and Soviets couldn't pacify it, why should we bother?

Brilliant, so not only set up the rally, but somehow orchestrates Trump's inflammatory response as well.

How do some of these guys get elected? Oh wait...

I have to say while I didn't vote for the man I must certainly say he has entertained me. Who do the democrats have lined up that can beat Trump in a general election? Biden?

Potentially, Booker is always in the conversation as well. I myself like Joe Manchin, who is more moderate and would appeal to a wider cross section of voters IMO. Of course the party seems intent on gravitating further left, which I think is a mistake.

So the headline for the email mailer from the WH today is:
"New American Strategy For Afghanistan Will Undo Past Failures"

Without even reading the email, or hearing anything about his speech yesterday, it strikes me that this is an example of a major issue with this President. I'm not sure that attempting to undo history is the best foot forward toward a winning solution in anything. Progress is about going forward, and certainly recognizing mistakes and acknowledging them is necessary, for success in the future. However, the end goal shouldn't be to undo history.

It's also indicative of the whole statue argument. In cases, like Gettysburg, where you are literally acknowledging and preserving history to tell a tale of an event, not all statues are representative of that. To simply remove them doesn't erase or change history, but it acknowledges that maybe the correct path forward doesn't involve that statue. That's a completely different argument than erasing history, which would be that we outlaw anything that even proves that the confederacy ever existed in the first place.

I've known Joe for 25 years. He would be a great president but like you said I don't think he could win the nomination and I don't think he thinks he could win it either.

I have always been impressed by him, and for the life of me I can't get why either party would spurn a candidate that might have some crossover appeal. Both within the house/senate and among the population.

Booker wouldn't be moving further left from Obama or Hillary. Manchin would be moving very far to the right. I like Manchin as a Senator from West Virginia and have gotten into numerous arguments from strategically brain dead people on the left who think we should primary both him and Heidi Heitkamp, but he's completely wrong as the Presidential nominee for the Democratic Party.

Manchin/Sanders/Warren/Clinton/Biden are all in their 70s by 2020 and should be unfit to serve.

Surely we can cross Clinton off the list. She had her shot against the weakest candidate in memory and still lost.

The fight is not against rich and poor and D and R. It is time to vote out as many boomers as possible because they've totally ran the country into the ground while building a giant and often times untouchable nest egg for themselves.

What would be Manchin's platform? He's great with local issues, but what would he sell as his policies for the economy and who would be excited by those policies?

Didn't we abandon running on policies and platforms about 30 years ago?

I'm sure he could say he's in favor of more jobs and against more taxes and 60% of the population would be satisfied.

If McConnell does end up spearheading a successful GOP revolt against Trump, it would be totally amazing that a guy could be the head of one branch of government and end up dictating the personnel of both other branches (Garland/Gorsuch)

The photo of Trump looking into the sun is so perfect that it almost validates him being voted into office in the first place. Almost.

It takes something like 4000 cops to keep a city like Pittsburgh in order. I'm guessing that will be more than enough troops to get Afghanistan pacified.

It is, without words, the definitive statement on Trump, and his entire presidency. Dennis Green couldn't have said it better.

So is it fair to say that there are no viable candidates from the Democrats? I agree with the earlier comment about no more last generation democrats. I would prefer someone who is more moderate versus the wide left (who like the wide right scares me to death).

I agree but those were at least known prospects. At this point I think I am going to vote for Dewayne "The Rock" Johnson.

2 years out Obama wasn't really considered a viable candidate and was largely an unknown outside of those that really follow politics.

In another year or so we should start to get a feel for who's viable for 2020.

I asked my wife that if we won the lottery and offered Trump our winnings and could find someone to guarantee him a TV show, if he would step down.

I honestly think there's a 75% chance he'd take it.
