I've been working on the assumption that WHA teams don't count.

However, Hull did play for the NHL-version of the Jets.

This may be a worse categorization than Heatley. Spezza is notoriously lazy and uninterested in team play. He's a generally nice and well-liked kid, but his nonexistent work ethic and refusal to alter his game are a big contributor to the Senators fractured dressing room right now.

Same logic applies, though: how will the voters see it?

Holy crap you'd think I should know that. Why is there no 'embarassed' face in the Smilies?

7.12 - Tony Esposito (Goalie) - Montreal, Chicago

He won the Calder and the Vezina in 1970, and then he followed that up with two more Vezinas over the next 4 years. Back then, the Vezina was given to the goalie whose team gave up the fewest goals during the season, so while the guys in front of him certainly helped him win, he was still (obviously) a big part of Chicago's success in the early '70s.

8.1 - Garnet Exelby (Big Hitter) - Atlanta

I know it takes a lot to get him to fight and take his medicine, and that may make his hitting seem a bit dirty, but I'm not looking for an enforcer here. The guy just hits people hard, and I figure it'd be nice to use Atlanta for something. This clip makes me laugh hysterically:

I particularily like how the first guy he hits just gets up and skates back down the ice as his buddies are getting dropped.

I am completely and utterly lost when it comes to the big hitter category.

As best I can tell, I have three options: pick one of several reasonably good current players who casual fans will have never heard of, pick a well-known current player who doesn't really fit the category, or pick the guy I want and screw up the rest of my picks.

Whoever came up with the rules is a dickhead.

I love that hockeygoon penalizes players for goals and assists!

Unfortunately for Logan, I seem to remember this from the rules: "To win you want to assemble the best team of players possible. So in the enforcer category, you do not want someone who can just fight, you want someone who can fight and also play hockey."

8.3 Derek Boogaard (Enforcer) (Minesota)

He's 6'7" and weighs 270 lbs. That's a professional wrestler, not a hockey player. He's big, he's mean, he's nasty. I watched him fly head over heels through the glass at a prospect tournament when his target (luckily)ducked at the very last moment.

Boogaard's knockout of fellow enforcer Todd Fedoruk helped spark debate over increasing the punishment for fighting in the NHL. During this fight, Boogaard landed a brutal punch to the cheek sending Fedoruk to the ice. As a result, Fedoruk had to undergo surgery to reconstruct his shattered cheek using titanium plates

Boogaard and his brother Aaron run the Derek and Aaron Boogaard Fighting Camp in Regina, Saskatchewan, for children ages 12 to 18. Yes, he runs a camp teaching children how to fight.

I can think of nobody I'd rather have protect the likes of St. Patrick.

I haven't felt right coming into this thread or even thinking about this draft since I drafted him. I still don't know what I was thinking and perhaps never will.

8.6 Chris Neil, Ottawa (Enforcer)

On a team of bitches like "leader" Spezza and "power forward" Heatley, here's a guy with sack. He's also a serious piece o' shit and I can't stand him. Perfect (well, except he isn't 6'7" 250+).

Buccigross would be proud. But, the guy did rack up 236 assists in his brief (6 seasons) NHL career, and a 50 goal / 50 assist season in 1987-88.

Went to a Cup final. Won coach of the year. Meh. Not a good pick, just a pure "whoever I can fit in at this point" choice..

Good pick. Neil isn't really a heavyweight since he regurlarly gets killed by guys like Brashear, and he still hasn't decided that he wants a career as a tough guy instead of an agitator (witness his nauseating turtle act against Dingman in the playoffs a few years ago). But he's also a decent hockey player, unlike McGratton, so that makes him a solid choice here.

John Ferguson (Mtl) - Enforcer

Bruising left-winger John Ferguson earned quite a reputation in an NHL career that spanned just eight seasons. From the moment he suited up for the Montreal Canadiens Ferguson vowed to be "the meanest, rottenest, most miserable cuss ever to play in the NHL." The Canadiens had recruited the fierce forward because they felt the team lacked toughness, and John Ferguson delivered in spades.

Though he played a solid physical game and was more then willing to drop his gloves and engage in the pugilistic side of the game, there was a lot more to Ferguson then just brawn. He scored 15 or more goals in four of his first five seasons then turned many heads by firing home 29 goals during the 1968-69 season. His personal success was over-shadowed by the team's success. Before Ferguson had been brough a board the three years had passed since the Canadiens ended their five-in-a-row Stanley Cup run that closed out the 1950's without the team winning again. With Ferguson providing the missing ingredient of toughness the team returned to glory and captured five Cups during his eight year career with them, including on in 1971, when he played his last game.
