Here's a good point for the Browns from profootballtalk.

If the Browns suck this year they'd be drafting high again next year and possibly taking a quarterback. So they got him a year early and will pay him a lot less in case he's a bust.

I have always though a "next years" pick is considered a round lower.
Looking at it that way it is only 2 second round picks.

Here we go for the Pats:

Houston, Harris, or Woodley. I think it's Houston. Or a trade.

I wouldn't consider it a round lower when it is likely to be in the upper half of the 1st round, possibly even in the top few picks going on history.

But I have enjoyed this day because of the relentless, ridiculous overkill on the Brady Quinn story. ESPN obviously came into this blowing Quinn and his metrosexual hair style and determined to make this his day. Now they're talking about what a wonderful thing this is for him and how he showed great character by what? Not jumping out a window or breaking down on national tv? I'm just frankly more than tired of hearing about BradyQuinnBradyQuinnBradyQuinn.

I'm disappointed that the hilight package for Brandon Meriweather didn't show him swinging his helmet at FIU.

Edit - My bad...Meriweather wasn't the 'swinging helmet' guy...he was the 'stomp a mudhole in someone' guy.

That makes sense when you're talking about a 4th or 5th round pick, but while there's not much difference between 4(1) and 4(32), there's obviously a huge difference between 1(1) and 1(32). Granted good and bad teams in the NFL change yearly (hello New Orleans), but I think Cleveland's a good bet to finish no better than 8-8.

Hey, so I am not a very good spin doctor.

I guess you are right, you can not use that rule at the top of round one.

Funny story - I was out with the family this afternoon and while we were walking we heard this bizzare wailing or crying echo through the park. None of us knew what it was, but when I got home and saw the stupid Dolphins drafted Teddy Ginn, I knew it was Kodos.

On a "chart value" the Browns 2nd and 3rd rounder this year would have been enough to trade up. If you devalue a pick by a round, their 2nd this year and next years 2nd would have easily have been enough. Their pick combo they traded could have easily gotten them up into the 11th pick in the draft, even devalued. I'd have killed for the Steelers to get that kind of return on 15, instead of drafting Lawrence Huey Richardson Alonzo Jackson Timmons.

Chart value doesn't consider that if they don't trade with Dallas KC would have taken Quinn and there'd be no further chances to get him. That part I understand was luck for Dallas, but I sure as heck bet they were offering lesser deals to the teams in front of them, and they all passed.

The chart value is worthless in my opinion. Cleveland coveted Quinn, who they had ranked much higher than 22. Dallas likely wasn't blind to this.

The chart value does not take variables like that into consideration.

The thing with the chart -- the chart is a guideline. It doesn't consider a wide variety of economic concerns that come into the equation about relative value of the players in the draft and other such things. Too many people, especially in the media, take the chart as holy writ, and it just doesn't work that way.

Branch, maybe?

I'm trying to figure out who the Pats are targeting with 28. Maybe the Penn State LB.

They better have given up the farm... there is no reason for the Eagles to be trading with the Cowboys unless they got excellent value.

Im guessing they just turned the 3rd and 5th into the Browns future 1st and probably are about to select the guy they were going to take at 22.

Adam Schefter reports that Quinn was already on the phone with the Ravens (who had a trade in principle with the Cowboys) when the Browns swooped in. This would probably explain the steep price the Browns paid. I'm sure there were some other teams in there in quite the bidding war.

The draft chart isn't a strict guideline to follow. Its based off of an average of pick value covering the last few years. 1st round draft picks have been steadily losing value because of the cost of locking up a 1st round pick. The 2nd and 3rd round is where teams are finding value now.

You can't just pull up the old draft charts and say a trade isn't even because the charts are dated and pick value varies from draft to draft and team to team.

Forget about Quinn, but Alan Branch is dropping like a stone.

I thought it would have been funny if the Pats had taken Branch for the pick they got for Branch.

Since they traded back into the first round, you have to figure this is exactly the guy they would have taken at 22. So they got their guy and traded a 3rd (87) and a 5th (159) for Cleveland's 2008 1st. It makes the fake GM in me proud.
