They claim to have kept that Scott guy on last year, and certainly he lasted longer than he should have (both in terms of performance and the fact that he had a domestic violence rap against him). Whether they had anything to do with it is another story.

I'm curious as to just how much of a dent they can make into the broader audience's choice.

I'd say they're definitely having an impact. Although it's impossible to tell just how many votes they're generating, I'd guess quite a few. I'd also guess they're one of the big reasons Kevin's still in the competition, and Scott lasted so long last year.

I don't, however, think they have enough to influence who actually wins. So it's maybe an order of elimination thing but not much more.

With a computer and a modem it would be very easy to write software to auto-vote for a contender. If they've done than I guess you could make a pretty big impact with a (relatively) small number of people. If you had a way to send SMS text votes for free i guess you could really influence the voting.

Ya.. they could probably keep someone in the game until around 7 spot but then the numbers of the legit callers will start to overwhelm the people just voting for the worst.

Their effect is minimal. They just take credit for existing voting patterns.

They're going to have to call security to remove Bobby, or else Barry is going to get raped and killed tonight.

Yep, Barry Manilow still makes me want to vomit.

It still amazes me that week in, week out, a competition for teens and twenty-somethings can manage to feature artists who were in their primes 20 to 30 years ago.

I can't stand Manilow's music at all, but I have to admit that I respect the hell out of his talent. You could tell, just in the clips from him working with the contestants, that he knows music inside and out. I just don't want to listen to him, but behind the scenes with arrangements and such, the guy is brilliant.

I might have switched Lisa for Ace, but all four of them should be gone in order.

Also, what was with Kevin's last statement.

"America, please vote for one of these wonderful contestants [points at all 9 remaining people]!"

He was acting like because he got voted off America would just stop voting. He sounded stupid. I bet votefortheworst.com is pissed right about now.

Kevin's parting comment did sound silly, but I just took it to mean that he wants the 13 people who voted for him to keep on voting. It was phrased in a strange way, but it made sense to me.

I don't give a shit about this show as an actual singing competition, and I admit that I'm going to miss the little guy.

I'm glad he's gone because he was an annoying little dweeb with a crappy voice, but I'm even gladder he's gone because it's a poke in the eye for the self-satisfied votefortheworst types.

I do think there's a chance that this might be one of those times where the producers have made use of the little "producers reserve the right to completely ignore what the voters want and impose their own results" disclaimer that pops up in the end credits though.

Heh. I never noticed that disclaimer. I remember after Jennifer Hudson got voted off in season 3 there was a lot of talk in the press from Simon and the producers that AI was in no way tied to fan voting going forward and would consider alternate means if people figured out ways to effectively game the system. I assume they would actually announce any change like that, but I wouldn't shed a tear if someone pulled executive privilege to get rid of the kid before got too embarassing for them (although i wish they would have excercised that option for the red head crooner too).

My wife LOVES Barry Manilow. I have to take her to his concert if he comes within "500 miles" of where we live according to what she told me last night...

I never noticed that little clause in the credits. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

'Idol' Fans Say Daughtry Copied Song
Friday March 24 3:06 PM ET

"American Idol" chat rooms were buzzing Friday over a controversy surrounding Chris Daughtry's version of "I Walk the Line."

Judges praised Daughtry for making the song his own when he performed the Johnny Cash tune on the Fox network show.

But some fans say the version wasn't Daughtry's, but ripped off from one done by the band Live in 2001.

One fan posted a message saying, "I just want to punch him in his bald head." Another reads: "This guy is a rip-off. Judges are plain dumb." And a third message says, "Live singer Ed Kowalczyk called and said that he would like his vocal style" back.

As for Chris.. pretty much alot about nothing. I have no reason to believe that he tried to pass the song of as his own. He recognized that RHCP did 'Higher Ground' so.. very possible he mentioned Live's version of 'Walk the Line' and the producers probably just hacked it off. I'd probably say 99% of the songs out there have been covered or redone by another band.. especially a popular 50's song.

Agreed. I think that is much ado about nothing. The judges are the ones who pimped it up that he did it original... what, did people actually think he was furiously doing his own arrangement all week? Come on now...
