This si a major problem since the ballpark dimensions have a fairly big effect on players e.g. fenway is hitters haven etc. They should have built some kind of wizard to input this stuff into the league easier or don't have ballpark factors at all. |

I am really liking this game right now.
It has the type of "universe"-feel to it that I have always wanted in a text-sim. I am looking forward to playing with a premade set of 2007 rosters, as I like to have a take-off point when I play OOTP, where I recognize recent history and its players. Right now, I created a 16-team (later expanded to 20) league in 1983 in various US East Coast towns and simmed through 25 years. My universe also has a Japanese League, a Cuban League, a Puerto Rican league, and three levels of minor leagues AND I just created a very rudimentary, low-skilled Austrailian league with 8-teams. I really like being able to customize the league on the fly. I am thinking of creating a rival Pacific Coast-type league with an on merging it with my other league. Also, very cool that former players become coaches/staff and that I can groom coaches with my farm team. I love that I feel like I have total control over my franchise. |

Yeah thats as easy as it gets unfortunately Was very dissapointed this wasnt looked at all. In the earlier versions, you could edit it for one league and then move those stadiums over to another league. You could also import/export ballpark's. Also, it was much easier to select the ballparks in 6.5/5 etc. Now you have a dropdown list, but if you have 100 parks, you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to get to it. What would make the process much easier was if they were treated like logos. You could name them after either the team or ballpark name and ootp would find it and put it in. Or at least a browse option. Hard to type all those in. |

Is there any way to get compensatory picks? I know the rules have changed, but losing this is a big disappointment. It was the one thing OOTP2006 got right.

If it means anything, Ryche, I played 2k6 for about six weeks in an attempt to understand it (because the FOBL was thinking about converting), then never picked it up again. So far, 2k7 is just blowing my socks off. I'm not a historical simmer, but when backdropping 20, 50 or 100 years of "real" baseball history is this easy, I can't help *not* doing it.

For this sim I'm just using the average and neutral settings.

I'm playing in a cheat mode of sorts since I have recalc on and picking up the Phillies in 1980, I have some idea who is going to become a star. But, I'm still having a blast and finding it challenging to manage my budget.

I can't find it. Can you tell me how to turn it on? I'm trying to GM the Reds and I need comp picks to keep up with the big revenue guys.

In this sim, they made the playoffs just 10 times from 1901 through 2006 and won 4 WS titles - 1902, 1940, 1985, and 2002. Kaline had a Hof career, but I'm sad to report that the Tigers traded him in 1969 to the expansion Seattle Pilots prior to the season for a crappy MR who wasa crappy closer for a couple of years for the Tigers. He had 3000 hits at the end of 1973, but came back for another year anyway and ended with 3039 hits and 378 HRs. Ed Siever, a deadball era pitcher who had just 83 wins IRL, is the team leader in wins with 283. Schoolbooy Rowe had 232, Bunning 189, and John Tudor had 118. Jack Morris was not very good. Predictably, Ty Cobb is the team leader in a number of categories, including 4146 hits and a .342 average. Howard Johnson spent his entire career with the Tigers, retiring in 1997 with 352 HRs and 2027 hits. He's the team leader in HRs, too. I wish I could cut-and-paste like vtbub, but this sim is on my laptop and I don't have internet access.

I pulled the plug on my desktop so I'm connected. Let me know if you have any particular reports you want me to cut and paste (players, leaders, etc.), and I'll try to get to it before I sign off for the night. I'll pick out a few interesting ones and post them.

Interesting I just noticed in my history sim that Al Rosen was traded not once but twice for MR. The first time was after his rookie year where he put up a .295 Avg with 34 HR and 104 RBI(Career highs for him) and the Indians traded him to the Braves for a MR that never pitched for the Indians. The second time he had already made the All Star game once, but was traded to the Yankees for a MR. He's never put up the type of numbers Rosen did in real life but still it was odd to see him traded twice.

I've seen it a bunch, too. I wonder if it's tied to the what someone (JPhillips?) mentioned earlier about the game overvaluing MRs in drafts. Could be the same thing going on here.
Most of the guys being traded for MRs aren't great - or aren't any longer - but you'd think they would command more.

Joe Magrane - interesting career, 2 Cy Youngs in his first 4 years, then his ratings fell off a cliff in 1992 and he barely played again.

Fernando...injuries killed his career later on (he worked his butt off to get back with the Tigers, pitched well, then got injured again), but interesting how he was converted to a closer in 81 - FernandoMania year IRL - but never closed again.

One thing that is mildly disappointing. Pitch Speed still doesn't seem to have any effect in the game. I traded for Nolan Ryan and he had a vastly underrated velocity, so I went into commish mode and the editor and changing his velocity had no effect on the estimated stats. Only changing movement, stuff, or control changed the estimated season stats.

From what I've seen velocity in itself doesn't affect anything directly. However, I do think velocity affects the effectiveness of the pitches a pitcher will throw. Check my post on the pitcher that I messed around with giving the knuckleball. I've been meaning to screw around with that more but haven't found the time. |

I just finished entering the team names for a 31 division, 294 team College League Template for OOTP2007. That's right, all 293 Teams and 1 made up team to balance things out.
If I can found someplace to host the template (probably a VERY huge file), I will put up the link, but I'm doing my best to add accurate Cities/Colors/Uniforms, etcetera.

I'm trying to understand the requirements and limitations of setting up a league. In the manual, it says that the number of subleagues cannot be changed after the game starts. Does this mean that I can't create two single, independent leagues and combine them at some point in the future?

A subleague is a group of teams within a league. A subleague is not an independent league or minor league. Think of a subleague as a division of the league into two groupings of teams with the winner of each group playing in the championship series. Each subleague can have the DH rule turned on or off. Now to combine your two independent leagues in the future, you would have to create a new league (with one or two subleagues, your choice) and then move your teams from your two old independent leagues into your newly created league. And, then delete the two old independent leagues. Edit: You can change the number of subleagues in a league during the offseason and preseason. Section 25.4.6 of the manual. I'm pleased with the ability this version to keep great players out of the lower independent leagues, by taking well below their market value. That was a huge problem in 2006 and it seems to be gone or at least, not as big a problem now than it was before.

I don't want to be a pain in the ass, but is it possible for one of our more knowledgeable members to post a short list of what years certain changes were made in the MLB that OOTP doesn't automatically do for you? Like free agency for instance ....
I just purchased the game based on this thread alone, but I don't quite know when these changes were made and I see that guys like Ksyrup seems to know exactly when these changes were made. Just a simple list like "1970 - Free Agency" and so on down the list? I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

Just off the top of my head - and people are free to add to this or change it - arbitration started in 1973, Free agency came in around 1976, revenue sharing in 2002. The ones I'm not sure about are waivers, 40-man rosters, Rule 5 draft, minor league free agency...there are probably a few others I'm missing. I usually add waivers and Rule 5 once FA starts, but I'm sure that's not right.

Not to be a pain in the ass, but is anybody actually playing this game as a GM/manager with a non-historical replay? I would really love to hear how that aspect of the game is working before I think about purchasing. There is not even much talk about this on the OOTP forums. Very strange. |

Rule 5 Draft started in 1950 (Roberto Clemente was a Rule 5 Selection)

There's records of rule 5 picks going back further than that. I found Red Sox players drafed in the rule 5 draft dating back to 1933. Couldn't find anything earlier than that, but it could very well go back even further. |

I'm surprised by that to, but I think that replaying may be the best way to test the engine and see how the multitude of options actually effects game play. I've strarted a solo ficitional league. I'm managing every game, so I haven't gotten very far, but the test leagues I ran all looked good. The only big complaint I've read on the OOTP forums involves the scouting system. So I've shut that off, and am using a 1-5 scale, with leaves room for plenty of mystery as to "real ratings", and makes me rely on performance. I'm doing an old school 1875 small fictional league, 4 divisions, 16 teams, no financials, no free agency, no scouts, no coaching, no 40-man roster, no rule V, 1 level of minors, and an exclusive feeder league. I've expanded by two teams in testing and it worked great. I really like this format because good teams are good for a while, and then suddenly collapse when their big star retires. I think it's easier to be immersed and have a sense of your league. Anyway, I've been very impressed thus far. Immersion factor is great - better than I can remember in any other sim (I don't play FM). |
