Bull. If they really dealt him primarily for expiring contracts and got nothing else really back in return, they made an awful deal. There has to be a team that had an expiring contract AND someone worth dealing who would have been interested in a solid veteran guard like Bibby.

Plus, what advantage to gain just one year? It's not like Bibby is on one of those awful contracts the Knicks have a ton of for the next seven years or whatever.

OHHHHH....Maybe I should rephrase it so you dont have to be uber-literal. "I dont understand why the league would "allow" the agreement of letting bench players automatically get trade blocking rights when signing a second contract" .

I agree but isnt this what we said about two other trades now? Maybe no one that has the expiring contracts and solid players wants to give them up? Or maybe potential is becoming more valuable than reality? I dont know Cheif but you make a good point.

In the NBA there's no hope being a late lottery team with little young talent. My biggest problem with the trade is that it didn't happen at the beginning of the year where they could have benefited from more losses.

They should trade Artest and Abdur-Rahim if they can as well.

From what I read Artest is being shopped heavily

Sorry for the literality, but it really doesn't seem like brain surgery to me.

Seems kind of obvious that the owners agreed to this because they didn't give a big enough shit about it to say "no", or at least not enough so to need to swap something else for it in the bargaining process.

Hawks being what they are, I would have to figure that this means that Bibby definitely won't be worth $13m at any point in the future while Shelden Williams will suddenly blossom into one of the best players in the league.

I have no problem with the NBA putting an end to that part of the deal. Having Stackhouse sent along to make up numbers, with the plan of having him cut and re-sign with the Mavs, is using a loophole in the whole salary cap system. It's one of those things where if everyone is quiet about it and it goes down, fine, but you don't come out and say "I'm only in the deal so we can get around that whole salary cap thing, but I'll be back in town in 30 days anyhow".

Well, I wasn't trying to lay it on you as your belief, just saying I don't buy it. Or if that is that case, the Kings' GM should be fired.

Heh...I know you're used to the bad stuff with the Hawks (like me with the Clips), but if Williams "suddenly blossoms", I will be shocked. Unforutnately for the Hawks, Bibby is already worth well under $13M, but he's better than starting Anthony Johnson every night. And you're only on the hook for two years anyway.

Dola,
on the George, essentially, the league says his bird-rights can't be traded with him on a 1 year deal - therefore, they gave the player the right to block a trade like that in order to retain his Bird rights. In this case, George probably isn't getting resigned by the Mavericks anyway now, so that's that.

Sacramento sends out $28 million over the next 2 years and takes back $13 million this year and just Sheldon's $3.4 mil next year (with a team option in 09/10). If they move Artest, the Kings could be under $40 million heading into FA with some decent young guys.

That should make the Hawks a pretty good team, at least by eastern standards, I'm suprised they actually pulled the trigger. They still need some size, though, IMO.

This is the best dunk comp I've seen in some time... Dwight Howard with 2 amazing dunks in the first round.

What a great dunk contest! Howard's first one was awesome as was the Superman costume. He didn't even dunk that 2nd one. Gerald Green's cake dunk was pretty good too. Can't wait to see Howard's final.

I remember about 10 years ago JR Rider "stole the show" and won the thing with the between the legs dunk. Now it's done off a pass and nobody cares. They've done a great job breathing life into this.

Most entertaining dunk contest in at least 5 years, probably a decade. Dwight Howard has been amazing.

That was a great dunk contest. Too bad Moon didn't really get to do much. He should of just taken off from way behind the free throw line instead of trying to go for the bounce thing.

It was done to reduce a cap loophole. Otherwise a team could trade for a player or two in George's situation, and then use them in a sign and trade the next season. The cap is a mockery as it is now, but it would probably be worse with even more creative accounting.

Kidd to the Nets will probably get done now. Keith van Horn is getting paid about 4m for simply existing.

Interesting tid-bit about Jamario Moon I found out this morning. Apparently, prior to the NBA season, he was nearly on a plane out here to Australia to play for a team in our national league before getting a call to go trial with the Raptors.

Would have loved to see him dominate down here, though that's not always the case with NBA talents... I mean, Stephen Jackson gave our league a shot before making his way to the NBA and was cut by his team after a few games in what figures to be one of the most boneheaded moves ever.

Yep, here's the new deal according to ESPN.com

Quote:
Sources say Mavs swingman Trenton Hassell and the retired Keith Van Horn will be plugged into the trade in place of Jerry Stackhouse and Devean George. If the newly proposed deal goes through, New Jersey would receive 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, center DeSagana Diop, guard Maurice Ager, forwards Hassell and Van Horn, two first-round draft picks and $3 million in cash for Kidd and Nets forward Malik Allen.

The Mavs are giving up a ton for a guy that, IMO, isn't as good as Devin Harris at this stage of his career.

Isn't Hassell their best perimeter defender?

I don't believe he's retired. IIRC he was taking a year off and might come back next season.
