The umpire called safe at first. He should have gone with his gut call.

he called safe at first because there was no force out. he then called out when the runner was tagged. two differenct calls, it's not as if he changed his mind

If you have Tivo, watch it again after J-Rod makes the out, you can see the ump asking Everett, "Did you tag him?" What a clown.. but good catch Fox.

SI

After seeing the play a couple more times...no, he didn't go out of the baseline. There's no way an ump would have made that call.

I'm rooting for the Astros just because, but that was a bad call and it might have cost the Cards a decent shot at a big inning, but the way Oswalt is pitching, I doubt it. And you guys bitching about the strike zone are being petty - they're no better or worse than they've been all year. Deal with it.

Do you know anything about baseball? You do not call safe because there is no force out. He called safe and the called the out after Molina was on the bag. Everett fooled him to making a call.

Your little rants make no sense. If you can't see that bases load and no outs is MUCH different than 1st and 3rd with one out, go watch a football game.

Uh, he was right. He called safe because Everett's foot was off the base when he caught the ball, negating a possible force out. He then quickly signalled out when Everett convinced him he tagged the runner.

sure, i know a little about baseball. the ump was indicating that the fielder did not have contact with the base, thus no force out. Then he saw the tag applied and called the runner out.

you will always see an umpire make the safe signal when the fielder is pulled off the base on a force out. the safe singal is often followed by the sweeping of the arm motion which indicates the fielder was off the base. however in this case the tag was applied so quickly that the umpire had no time to make the arm sweeping motion, only the out signal.

hope that makes a little more sense

The Squeeze was a brilliant call. Some of LaRussa is wearing off on Garner.

Which umpire is that? Is he the same one that threw Edmonds out? I think he is.

It makes more sense but an umpire is never suppose to do that. He is off the bag so there is no call. He called safe the same time he went for the tag.

The umpire which threw Edmonds out, Cuzzi, is in left field. Nice try though.

Oswalt is over 100 pitches, I wonder how much longer he'll be in. He's only given up 2 hits, and the way the Cards have been hitting Lidge, I would keep him in.

Oh man, I love Roy...

Yup, keep Roy in until it looks like he's in trouble. Then bring in Wheeler. Then bring in Lidge as a last resort (did I just type that?!?!?! )

I dont think the Lidge idea is too bright, unless the Stros are so far ahead that one swing of the bat couldn't hurt them.

We can't let Brad stew on last game, though. Don't want him to wind up another Mitch Williams or Kent Merker, do we?

Giving up on Lidge so soon? I'd make sure he got out there tonight and recorded the last out. Nothing like a confidence booster into the WS.

On the other hand, if he gives up a Grand Slammy for another loss, I'd take that.

Larry Walker is old and washed up. Other than that double he hit last inning he has been down right useless for the Cardinals in the post season.

He has the strangest, most unorthodox throwing motion of anyone I'v seen at any level of baseball from high school on up. I can't even just say the guy throws like a girl, because that would be an insult to girly throws. It's like he throws a half-shotput, half-unbended elbow throw. Just bizarre. Fucking Gator.
