Some good news:
http://govolsxtra.com/news/2007/sep/...ed-concussion/ Tennessee got good news on injured Xavier Mitchell, who was carted off the field on a stretcher in the 45-31 loss at California on Saturday night. Head coach Phillip Fulmer said Sunday the CT scan of Mitchell’s head and neck was negative and that the injury is considered a concussion. Mitchell, a senior defensive end, went down in the fourth quarter following a collision with teammate Eric Berry while trying to assist on a tackle. Mitchell was taken to a Berkeley-area hospital as a precaution but was able to return to Knoxville on the team plane late Saturday evening. Fulmer wasn’t sure Sunday if Mitchell would be available for Saturday’s game at Neyland Stadium against Southern Mississippi. “The CT scan came back negative as far as any structural problems,’’ Fulmer said. “Right now they’re calling it a concussion. “We’ll see where he goes.’’

Well, Week 1 of the season is over, and Seton Hill is already 0-1. If they had gone up to Slippery Rock and won the game, it would have been the greatest upset in college football history. Unfortunately, the Griffins were down 30-24 and punting. The snap went over punter Shane Jackson's head for a 37-yard loss, Slippery Rock scored, and then the Rock used their momentum to coast to a 51-24 win.
Next week, Seton Hill hosts NAIA playoff contender Walsh University. This is the second year in a row that Seton Hill gets Walsh at home. I don't know how that happened. After two years of playing an NAIA schedule, Seton Hill is now playing a Division II schedule, so this is the only NAIA team that the Griffins play this year. I still expect SHU to get stomped. This has been my "pretend that anybody cares about Seton Hill" post for Week 1.

Texas Tech, SMU, Florida State and Clemson would beg to differ.

Jimbo = overrated by FSU fans/alumni/Bobby Bowden/ect
Don't get me wrong, he can develop talent, especially QBs. He may be the best QB coach in NCAA football. But he is a below average game planner and in game adjuster. |

Florida State just looks horrible. Thank God it's Clemson/FSU as the Monday night game as opposed to Miami/FSU. At least now we get to see one decent team.

I see some flashes of talent, but nowhere near enough to compete for a BCS slot. The offense looking like crap is one thing, we've seen that for years now. The defense looks horrible too. Those two Clemson backs are ridiculously talented, but you never used to see FSU give up plays like that 50 yard screen pass. This just isn't a very good team. |

FSU is still getting great athletes, but they aren't progressing (or are actually regressing) once they get into the program. That has to fall squarely on Bobby, who has been exposed quite a bit since his top assistants left to make their own programs.
I think Miami will be tough this year, despite the fact that their QB play is abysmal. Larry Coker was in way over his head and Randy Shannon has already transformed the culture and attitude, bringing back the discipline that's been missing since Butch Davis left to overexpose himself. |

How the heck is Clemson NOT ranked? They have two of the best running backs (and everyone knew about them too) and the past few years have had very good defenses.

Okay, this game is starting to get a little strange.
And we're seeing why Clemson wasn't ranked at the start of the season.

Clemson doesn't implode (they didn't even have to play well, just not implode) and they are still up 24 - 3. Can't Tommy get a grip on this team?

I think Miami would be better served with Wright in there. He had a strong sophomore year, and I don't see why he can't get back to that point. Kirby has some mobility, but he's going to need it, because his accuracy is abysmal. Maybe things will change when we get Shields back.

All I'm getting is the play by play since our cable provider decided horse racing and wrestling is better than football. What's been going on in the 3rd quarter and what happend on the team rush -51 yards SAFETY play? Fumbled shotgun snap over the QB and he boots it through the endzone?

They pull this, to some degree, pretty frequently. They led 4 of the 5 games they lost last year (all but the bowl game) Also led 3 of 4 losses in '05, and 4 of 5 losses in '04.

It was a punt, the snap was way high, the punter recovered it on the 10 and just took it into the end zone for a safety instead of turning around and trying to make something happen. |

Florida State got ripped off twice on the final play. Essentially, there was a pass down the sideline with the time counting down. The wideout (not sure who) caught the ball, had one foot come down in bounds, the next just out of bounds, then he got hit and the ball was jarred loose. Called an incomplete pass on the field and the clock ran out.
Review confirmed that it was an incomplete pass... okay, whatever, I disagree, but... the ball was on the ground out of bounds with 0:02 left on the clock. If you say he was bobbling out of bounds, fine... if you say it was incomplete, fine... but there were absolutely at least two seconds left on the clock at the end of the game. Not a Seminole fan, but they got jobbed. |

And FWIW, it was a very entertaining game, which I didn't expect at halftime - final score was 24-18, and it took a Clemson stop at their own 30 (consecutive sacks on third and fourth down) on the second-to-last FSU drive, and then this play to finish the win.

freeman is a backup QB, and not a particularly good one -- you'll never beat a good team with him behind center. I can only surmise that he 'won' the job in camp because wright's knee injury is more serious than they're letting on. |

I agree it was pretty clearly a catch and then a foot out of bounds. FSU should have had one more play from that spot.

what a game last night.
We didn't get home until 4:15 this morning. All that said, I have no idea what or who we are, and we answered nothing. Going into this game, we had 2 great RBs, no idea what we had a QB a shaky O-Line at bst and a Very Good D that needed only to plug a few holes from last year. This morning I cant say anything is different . Freshman Safety De-Andre mcDaniel is a beast. True Freshman and 17 years old and played like a BEAST against FSU. Up next 2 tough games UL-Monroe and Furman. |

I detect some southern bias here. Are you really suggesting that Florida's offense is more than twice as good as Cal's? Cal should have an outstanding offense this year - it's their defense that will likely be their biggest issue.

Any team that actually tackles should be able to keep them to 28 or less. I'm apparently not nearly as impressed by their performance as others. Whereas I think Tebow might be a friggin' monster in general & especially against this defense. And most of all I think Florida would enjoy scoring as early & as often as possible against a division rival, particularly UT.

I just saw Cal be as good as they can be. If they finish better than 9-3 I'll be surprised.

That may be true - as I said, their defense could be a weak point this year; they lost a lot of talent on that side of the ball. But offensively, they are quite good, and I think they'll continue to prove that this season. Florida may well have a better offense, but I doubt it will be better by a huge margin.

I am so tired of hearing SEC fans say that "the second-best Pac-10 team beat the fourth-best SEC team" when Cal beat Tennessee. Is that all they got?
--Joe, Sacramento Joe, Joe, Joe. So blissfully naïve. If there's two things I've learned during my time on this beat, it's that the SEC is positively, indisputably the greatest conference in the history of mankind, and little things like logic, facts and common sense have no bearing whatsoever on this distinction. Tennessee beats Cal last year? Yet another feather in the SEC's cap. Cal beats Tennessee this year? Completely irrelevant. USC beats Auburn 23-0 in 2003? That wasn't one of Auburn's better teams. Auburn goes 12-0 the next year and gets left out of the BCS title game? A crime against humanity, seeing as the Tigers obviously would have beaten the Trojans. Big East champion Louisville comes within an offsides call of edging SEC champ Florida out of last year's BCS title game? Exhibit A why the whole system needs to be blown up. The fact that Big East champion West Virginia beat SEC champion Georgia in the Sugar Bowl just a year earlier? Eh -- the Dawgs weren't up for that game. Les Miles calls out USC's "soft" Pac-10 schedule? Well ... duh. But wouldn't that make SEC divisional champion Arkansas -- whom the Trojans beat 50-14 just a year earlier -- even softer? No, because Darren McFadden wasn't healthy, and he's obviously capable of producing 36 points on his own. Florida beating Ohio State like a rented mule in last year's title game? Indisputable confirmation that the Big Ten can't hold a candle to the SEC. The fact SEC teams lost their other two bowl games against Big Ten foes? Never happened. So basically, Joe, I wouldn't waste your time with one of those futile debates. Just accept the SEC's eternal superiority for what it is and we can all go back to watching The Pick-Up Artist in peace. - Mandel Last edited by MrBug708 : 09-06-2007 at 12:48 AM. |
