I like what they did as well. Kaberle, Gil, Kubina, and McCabe is a solid top four defensive unit. The 5th and 6th guys should be young, cheap players. The Leafs' defensive corps has sucked horribly for years. Building a foundation from the back and then moving forward seems like a pretty good idea to me.

My beef isn't the players they got, nor where they are spending their money. It's the amount they've got tied up in those four guys on defense ($17.5 Million).

ah, Dallas Drake. many years ago, a bunch of us were watching a Bruins game on TV and Derek Sanderson started yammering about how "Dallas Drake" was a great hockey name. Nevermind the fact that it's probably better suited to a porn star, the nickmane Dallas "Hockey Name" Drake has always stuck with me, as dumb as it is. I can't say Dallas Drake in my head with the hockey name part. Kind of like Ville "The Thrill" Peltonen and Jeff "Can't" Hackett.

Five teams went over the cap last year (Atlanta and New Jersey specifically named) and that comes out of this year's cap.
Also, the lowest revenue team (assumed to be Nashville) will receive $12.5 million in revenue sharing. The bottom 12 teams receive revenue sharing. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sp...hlinsider.html |

The Flames signed former Minnesota defenceman, Andrei Zyuzin for $2.8 million/2 years.
The Flames now have a D-core of Regehr, Phaneuf, Hamrlik, Warrener, Ference and Zyuzin for $10.5 million. I'd say that's smart cap management (and luck with Phaneuf). |

The Wings are holding a 1 p.m. press conference tomorrow.
Speculation is that it is for Yzerman's retirement announcement.

It's amazing... growing up a as a Leafs fan, we went to war with the guy a hundred times in my life. And yet, here we are at the end of the road, and I can't think of a single bad thing to say about him. An amazing player, a class act, and the last guy you ever wanted to play against. If this is really the end, then my blue and white hat is doffed. I pray that in my lifetime the Leafs will find a guy with even half the talent Stevie Y had.

As a long time Wings hater/disdainer, I'm still sorry to see Yzerman go (assuming this is the case). He was good for the game of hockey. It's not like Roy or Stevens leaving, may they both burn in hell.
Thanks for the memories, Steve. Sidenote, I know there are still lots of potential deals and suitors out there for Pronger. But one of the analysts on TSN mentions the Ducks as "major players" for him and say that a deal for Pronger (not to Ducks necessarily, but to anyone, period) is likely to get done in the next 24 hours. Man, how much fun would it be to have Pronger and Neirdermayer on the same blue line. Wow!

Pens are killing me. I knew Ray Shero would not make an immediate splash in FA...but who is left?
There are enough D that I think he'll still be able to grab someone. 3 guys from Nashville still available. Witt will be overpriced...Markov with alleged off-ice issues. But Mark Eaton seems like a nice fit. But...the Pens have, arguably, ZERO top 6 wings right now! Colby Armstrong probably shouldn't be on a top line. Outside of Samsonov...slim pickin's left. Shero has said, though, he would explore a trade if it is better value that the FA market. |

Well, actually, my guess is they wouldn't play on the same line. Beauchemin turned into a terrific D-man next to Neeis last season, and he'll probably stay there. They would probably pair Pronger with Vishnevsky and scare the living crap out of any forward smaller than 6'2" 210.

Woah. A hell of a deal for the Ducks. Oilers deal Pronger to Anaheim Chris Pronger TSN.ca Staff 7/3/2006 11:57:15 AM Chris Pronger, the biggest name on the summer trade block is going to California. The Anaheim Ducks have traded right winger Joffrey Lupul, one non-roster player and several conditional high-end draft picks to the Oilers in exchange for Pronger. Pronger, 31, put up 56 points and a plus-2 rating during the 2005-2006 regular season and was a stalwart for the Oilers during their playoff run to the Stanley Cup final, recording 21 points and a plus-10 rating in 24 games. The 2000 Hart and Norris Trophy winner is regarded as one of the very best defenders in the league, and joins a Ducks defence corps that includes 2004 Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer. Pronger has 456 points and a plus-127 rating in an 802-game career that has seen him play in Hartford, St. Louis and Edmonton. He also has 72 points and a plus-25 rating in 109 career playoff games. The 6-foot-6, 220 pound defenceman signed a five-year, $31.25-million contract with the Oilers last August, then surprised the team with his request for a trade shortly after the season due to personal reasons. Lupul added nine goals and 11 points in 16 playoff games this past season, including a four-goal game against Colorado in the second-round series. A restricted free agent, Lupul earned $900,600 last season.

Very. NHL.com, sportsnet.ca, yahoo, and the Oilers homepage all have nothing on the trade as of yet. Looks like TSN jumped on something early, then found out it wasn't completely confirmed or possibly that the player in question hadn't been informed yet. As it is, there is only a handful of guys on the Ducks roster that would qualify for that spot, so the one that interests me is the non-roster player and of course just what the draft pick situation is. |

Oilers out: Pronger, Peca, Dvorak, Samsanov Oilers in: Roloson, Lupul. Wow...It's addition by subtraction. We're really building on success. It should be fun trying to unload Roloson's contract in the next couple of years when Lowe figures out one playoff run does not make a $4 million goalie. |

Chief Rum, speaking of Beauchemin, did he really playing that well on the top pairing? I watched him in Columbus when he was here and was NOT impressed with him at all. He just seemed really average when he played, wasn't too physical, skated decently, moved the puck okay, but nothing really special that warranted top pairing time. He didn't look any better than the top 5 (Foote, Klesla, Suchy, Berard, Wescott) that was there at the time and we picked up Ron Hainsey on waivers, who looked better than Beauchemin as well.

Did you watch ANY of Anaheim's games during the playoffs? No doubt playing with Niedermayer helped but he looked like a definite #2, he was extremely physical (winning the fight against Iginla ignited the Ducks and deflated the Flames), and he has a booming shot on the PP. Maybe he's just coming into his own but now he's definitely the Ducks #3. |

I watched a little of them during the playoffs, and he seemed good to me, which was a little shocking. But, when I watched him in person a few times, he didn't shoot or hit. He was very ordinary on a team that NEEDS defense. I remember a comment that Brian Burke made a couple months after picking up Beachemin, something to the effect that he was out of shape when they got him. Of course, MacLean denies that FB was out of shape when he was here, but this really scares me, wondering about how good the conditioning program is here in Columbus. Of course, we got Federov in the deal, who played SO much better than his numbers suggest, so I'm not upset about that deal at all. Last edited by TurnerONU22 : 07-03-2006 at 06:12 PM. |

Rangers signed Aaron Ward for 2 years, $5.5 million and they lose Steve Rucchin who signed with the Thrashers.
The Blues website is saying that they have signed Guerin.
