Stupid Question About iPods
I'm thinking about taking the plunge and buying an iPod. I think. Just one stupid question: I don't have to use iTunes to puchase music, right? I have a bunch of existing mp3s that I've already ripped or downloaded - I'll be able to transfer them to the iPod without a problem, right? In other words, iPods aren't proprietary in that they only work with iTunes, correct?
Thanks in advance! |

Correct. Not sure if they work with Napster, Yahoo and other services, but they work with vanilla MP3's.

That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure.

You may need to use the iTunes software to transfer them though, not sure. I've transferred plenty of MP3's, but all through the iTunes software.

Yeah. I actually already purchased the Creative Zen 40 gig but am going to take it back. I got it on sale from Best Buy and it was a little dinged up (last one they had) so he gave me 10% more off - grand total was $154.00. But then I saw that Amazon gives you $100 off the iPod if you join Audible for a year (which I'm planning on doing anyway). So I think I'm gonna be getting the 30 gig iPod with video for $199. I've kind of gone around and around about it, but have pretty much decided on the iPod, I think.

Quote:
iPods support mp3, AAC, iTunes, Audible, and a handful of other formats. If you purchase from other music stores, such as Rhapsody or Napster, you will need to burn to CD and, if possible, rip as mp3's in order to use them with iTunes. But you are not locked into using only files purchased through iTunes, no. |
