Unhappy Ex-NFL lineman Darrell Russell dies in auto accident

Wow. This really sucks. I went to high school with him and Jelani McCoy (didn't know them that well, as they were a class ahead of me) and at the time, they were both pretty decent folks.

R.I.P., Darrell.

Russell dies after speeding car hits bus

ESPN.com news services

LOS ANGELES -- Former Raiders and Buccaneers defensive lineman Darrell Russell has died in an automobile accident.

Russell and the driver of 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix died when the speeding car went out of control, sheared off a fire hydrant and ran into a parked bus shortly after 9 a.m. ET, accoring to Ron Myers of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The accident occurred on La Cienega Blvd. near Sawyer Street. The car left a 50-yard path of destruction, according to fire department spokesmen.

The Grand Prix apparently hit a curb, then ran over the hydrant and knocked over several news racks before striking Metro Rapid bus No. 717, which was out of service with its flashers on. The driver was standing outside the bus when the accident occurred. The car may have been racing another vehicle before the accident, according to an MTA spokesman.

It took paramedics 25 minutes to get both men out of the car. Both were taken to local hospitals in critical condition. The driver died shortly after arriving at UCLA Medical Center. Russell died later at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Russell was suspended from the NFL for the seventh time in July for violating the league's substance abuse policy and was released from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He Russell missed 1½ years while serving two league suspensions before he played in eight games in 2003 for the Redskins.

He was the second overall player selected by the Raiders in the 1997 draft.

Detective Mike Fischer of the West Traffic Division says the driver, who also died, has not yet been identified.

That is too bad. I thought Larry Parker was going to be be more of an impact player than he was. I think he tore up his knee in training camp one year that really set him back.

Dang this sucks. Darrell Russell had so much talent when he came into the league with the Raiders. What a waste. RIP.

RIP DR.

Some of my friends were at a party with Larry Parker the night before the SC-UCLA game a couple of weeks ago. They said he was in pretty rough shape, offering to sell his field pass for the game for cash for the white stuff. A somewhat humorous side note is that he was hanging out with Tony Tarasco.

I actually took a relatively easy journalism class my senior year, and Darrell Russell was in it. He was in my group and we worked on a project together. He seemed like a genuinely nice person. Very sad news

But it was his car. Apparently, the same friend of mine was out with this group last night as well.

I knew Mike Bastianelli - he was an assistant coach for one year at the same high school I am a coach at. I did not know him well, but I did speak with him on several occasions. (we were coaching different levels at the time)

Mike was a great athlete at DLS and is widely considered the greatest QB they have ever had. He was also good, not great at USC as a backup WR, special teamer and kicker.

Like I said I did not know him well, but several of the other coaches I coach with did know him well and they were all devastated to hear this today.

RIP Mike

Another avoidable tradgedy. Such a waste of a good person, making all the wrong decisions.

May God Bless
