Does anyone know the amount a player recieves as a Per Diem for food, et. al? Is this set by MLB or is it a team by team basis?

I thought this was set in the bargaining agreement. I believe I read something about the last contract having a $72.00 meal per diem for every player per day.

edit: that would have been the previous contract, I don't know what they negotiated into this one.

I remember hearing that it was somewhere around $75, but not specifically what the latest negotiated amount was. All I know is that it was/is better than the $3/$6/$12 I used to get when traveling on state business.

They actually get millions of dollars AND a set amount of money to eat on a day?

I assume the NBA doesn't have anything like this or Sprewell would have been able to feed his family.

Almost anyone who travels for a living gets some sort of a per diem. All four major sports have some sort of per diem clause unless the NBA or NHL just stopped it.

When you figure these guys do make hundreds of thousands of dollars or more, I'm not sure what an extra ten grand or so a player is going to hurt.

To the Rookie making league minimum, 72 dollars a day is probably a ton of money

And to somebody in the NBA on a 10-day contract or a minor league player getting a cup of coffee in the Big Leagues, it is worth even more.

Rookie minimum is $316,000. So $72 is about what they would be making for half an hour if they were working a standard 40 hour work week.

Per Diem is not taxed (at least it is not for me). That makes it worth roughly twice what it looks like related to their salaries.

When I was in, it was highly variable. One trip I took I got over 100 US dollars per diem.

Same with me. On my first trip to Ft. Campbell, KY, I was receiving $84/day because I was staying off base while I was receiving only $12/day because I was staying in on-base lodging.
