Try this:

I de-zoned my LG player a couple of years ago. Always worked well, never had a problem with it.

Don't mean to threadjack, but I have a kind of but not really related question.

I have an old DVD Player that I got for pretty cheap (not a top brand). It plays DVDs and music fine, but it doesn't play DVD-R. Is there any way whatsoever to make it do so effectively or do I have to quit being cheap and go buy another one?

I checked with the manufacturer website, but there isn't much there.

When I lived in Malaysia, all of the DVD players that they sold were multi-region. I know that Singapore and Indoneasia are the same way. And the DVDs that I bought while I was there were multi-region as well. I never really understood what the point of having a region code on DVDs.

I suggest you make some calls to local stores who does service on DVD players and ask them if they can modify your player's hardware to make it region free. It shouldn't cost too much, as it is only a chip that needs to be replaced.

No, I'm pretty sure you have to buy a model who's compatible with the DVD-R standard. I've never heard of such modifications being done. You could ask a service store, but I'd be surprised if they had better news for you.

Thanks for the reply, 3ric. That's what I was afraid of. I can get one pretty cheap at Wal-Mart of something, but FOFC just hounded me into buying NCAA 2006 so I was hoping to save some bucks.

I always assumed it was to protect from illegal imports. But that's just a guess.

I remember having a few sites a few years ago where you could search for just about any dvd player and how to make them regionfree.. couldn't find any of those sites now though, but I did find this advice. It doesn't explicitly say that it'll fix your player, but it does fix a bunch of Sony players, so at least try it.

Multi-Region:

* Turn On the unit with the remote controller
* Wait until "no disc" appears in the unit's display
* Press Pause, 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9
* The word "CODE" should appear in the display
* Within five seconds, press the key that corresponds to the zone you want i.e. 0 for region free, 1 for region 1, 2 for region 2 and so on
* Again, within 5 seconds, press Pause and Power

If the above fails to work then you may wish to try the following:

* Put the player into Standby mode
* Press 1 and Return on remote for region 1, 2 and Return for region 2, and so on. Use 0 and Return to return player to default region settings
* Press P-Mode and Return to play DVD's with the selected region, auto-switching is Off
* Press Audio and Return for auto-switching On
* Press Angle and Return for MacroVision On
* Press Subtitle and Return for MacroVision Off
