Quiet Sports Day

Seems like the day before Christmas. Home Run Derby is the only live event. Everything is taking a break today.

No soccer anywhere in the world. The only games in the US that are playing are AA, A and Rookie league games.

Reykjavik v Fylkir in the Icelandic Premier division kicking off in under an hour, and Sundsvall just going 1-0 up against Djurgarden in the 80th minute of their Swedish Allsvenskan Division match? No soccer? They're crowd pleasers!

Today is the suckiest sports day that ever sucked. Having fed my baseball addiction daily for almost 4 months, the all-star break is an unwelcome break in the action. And of course, there's nothing else going on, either.

I shouldn't have to tell you what I think of the "international Home Run Derby."

Look at the BBC website and they listed no fixtures. I guess soccer is so popular that someone is playing everyday. I guess the BBC site covers the major leagues and I guess Sweden and Iceland are not popular enough for them for coverage on their website.

You know, the more I think (and seeth) about this stuff, the more I realize what it is about it that bugs me. It's that nationalism is becoming the racism of the 21st century. Your country is no longer just a thing to be celebrated in and of itself, it's a way to divide you from others. Why can't there just be people who hit home runs, or teams of people from different countries who compete against each other - why does it matter where each individual or team is from and who does better than the others? Did we have black vs. white HR contests way back when? Seems like the same concept to me.

There's nothing inherently different about a Dominican baseball player vs. an American baseball player vs. a Japanese baseball player that we should divide them up to determine who is the best. It's just a new way to segregate/divide people based on their human differences, which have nothing to do with the underlying sport they are competing in. It's horseshit.

I'm with you. Baseball should take a page from most of the other sports that bother with an All-Star-type thing: do it after the season is over. Don't interrupt the flow of the season - the pennant races are just getting good! And now we have to wait four days?

No, not him. Although I do blame him for ruining Styx.

And in case you're following that icelandic match closely, Fylkir is ahead of Reykjavik in the 37th minute 2-0.

I work with somebody who used to be a bookie, and he hated the day before and the day after the MLB All-Star Game. There was nothing that he could take bets on.
