Now I love Madden, NCAA, and NHL (tho not this year's) but there is no way EA can make a good sim on their own...

Maybe EA gave Jim more control and he went back and there will be a new version of EA FOF...

Feel free to discuss.

They don't have to make it good, they just have to make it profitable. That's all they care about.

Jim has always said the more competition the better. Like sab said, the game will not be of high quality. It may may allow for a distributor to pick-up Jim's games.

EA Sports wasn't interested in having a sports sim back when they had a sports sim.

I think the success of the franchise and dynasty modes has taught them a lesson. When they had jim, the managerial side wasnt big. Now, the franchise and stuff like that is the most popular part of ALL of their sports games...i think they realise how much money there is to be made here if done right, and thought it wont be a 10, I bet it will at least be a solid first effort.

$10 says that this "sports sim" will be a mutated version of what FOF Online was supposed to be (along with, you got it, subscription fees)

My first thought was.... it could be a managerial sim with graphics to be used for the new console systems to be released in a couple of years.

This EA manager game will be DOA, much like their other entries into that market.

I found it rather bloated, and annoying. It did not last long on any of my drives. I would rather play CM2 than TCM.

Just curious, could the new "agreement" between the NFL and EA big a reason behind this?

It could be. It stands to reason that EA would want to maximize the return on that investment.

I wonder if EA can still use the code from FOF2k1?

It would be pretty cool if espn 2k6 was a game using the "playmakers" license as well. For 20 bucks i could use fictitious guys if it was fun.

Not quite true. My impression is they were interested throughout the days of FOF2, the shotgun wedding of Jim & Gigawatt Studios, and the announcement of FOF Online. They lost interest for at least two reasons:

1) For some reason EA had to deal with AOL, which was slow to get done, which caused them to release the game late, and
2) Because it was late, they couldn't release it on the Madden disks as intended.

The mind boggles at what could have been...

It is fun, but when you realize (after a week or so) that whatever you do you have absolutly no influence on what's happening on the field, you stop playing it.

I like the fact that there is competition out there. But EA's sim games will not challenge Jim's games in quality.

I remmeber when I first read about this on gamespot a week or 2 ago, and I had that same question. Could they have used that a basis for designing a "new" football management game?

It will be a pretty game, with tons of options, amazing graphics....you gameplans will mean nothing for the 3D game view, your hotdog sales will affect more your team than your match results, when you fast sim your games, the best QB will be the one that didn't play that game, the WR's will run 200 yards while the Running back will catch 30 passes, the player injuried in that sack will be you offensive coordinator, the match mvp will be your team towel boy etc etc and at the end all us will be dissapointed...umm am i talking about TCM or the future NFL game?

I always thought Jim undervalued the hotdog sales.....but maybe thats just me. Besides, I am still pissed that Bratwurst was completely left off the stadium menu's.

FWIW, I had heard somewhere that Joe Stallings is now working for EA - working on Madden, I believe. I wonder if he has any input in this?

According to this page Joe (as of 1/3/05) is indeed at EA as "Technical Art Group Manager" so it seems as though he wouldn't really be able to influence going into a sport sim or not.

By his title, no. But Joe is a talker. There is no telling what exactly else he might be doing at EA. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't end up as president of the company (and the company fold in scandal shortly after).

I grant you that Joe is a talker but I would think that his influence in a company as large as EA would have to be some what limited.
