PS2 Madden 2005 Freeze problem

I did some very basic searches here and on google and haven't found anything, so I figured I'd ask before I dig a lot deeper...

I got madden 2005 on PS2 used for Christmas. I have a pretty old PS2, first gen possibly, I don't remember, but it plays all my games fine. I turned Madden on for the first time last night.

I tried to play two games last night and got through no more than 5 plays before the game would freeze right after calling a play and breaking the huddle.

Is this a known problem, is there anything I can do about it?

I had a ton of freezes on Madden when I first bought it, mostly during the Franchise screens, not game play. I swapped it for another one. I still get some at times, but not near as bad as the first one. Plus, my PS2 pretty much never freezes on any other game.
