I have decided to start a new solo historical career using the historical draft files available at http://www.cflfb.com/FOF/fof.htm .
I will be using the following game settings: Preference Draft Use Full X Factor Include personality profiles and team chemistry Allow hiring and firing of GMs Wall Street Difficulty Level Cap increases 28/80 Injuries 100 I will sign my own rookies and handle the depth chart and any necessary signings. The AI will handle the gameplans.

For the preference draft, I will list the chosen values I have given to each position group. 0 is the minimum value, 10 is the maximum.
Reserves/Starters: Having good starters is something we want, but having good depth at the critical positions (OLine, DLine, secondary) is key to a successful team. I set the bar to 6, meaning a slight lean to starters. Potential/Experience: Potential is crucial going forward, but we do want guys who can contribute immediately and also be long term building blocks for the Dolphins. I set the bar between 5 and 6. Run Defense/ Pass Defense: I don't want to be a team that gives up a ton of yardage on the ground, but if push comes to shove, I'd much rather be a team who can shutdown the pass then one who stops the run. Set the bar at 7. Run Blocking/ Pass Blocking: I want to establish a balanced offense so we can keep the other team off balance. I might like to pass a little more tho so we will go with 5.5 Loyalty: I am very loyal to my players and expect the same in return. I set the bar at 8.5 Fan Popularity: While having popular players, who will sell merchandise is important to the Dolphins organization, on the whole, we would rather have good players who are under the radar than overrated "superstars". I set the bar at 2 Quarterbacks: A good franchise quarterback is someone we are looking at and want to bring in, but it is not the be all end all position for us. I'll put us down as a 7 Running Backs: We want to have a strong running game, but I feel if we have a good OLine, we can get by with lesser backs which will allow us to spend more resources on other areas of the team: 3.5 Receivers: Since we plan to have a balanced attack, we need to have TEs and WRs who can get the job done. 4.5 Offensive Linemen: The offensive line is a position that we want to be our strength and we will focus a good deal of our drafting resources on the OLine. 8 Kickers: Placekickers and punters are a dime a dozen. I will go as cheap as possible on the kickers and hope we get some guys who can help: 0.5 Defensive Linemen: We're going to work our way out from the trenches when building this team and the DLine is where our defensive pressure will start. If we can get pressure on the QB using just 4 downlinemen: 6.5 Linebackers: Since we plan on running a 4-3 defense, we need a couple good LBs, but we don't need the depth we would use if we were playing the 3-4. We'll put the bar at 3 Secondary: Pass coverage is a key to playing good defense and winning games and we need as many good DBs as we can get. 6.5

Preseason preview of the Dolphins
We haven't signed our final 7 roster filler guys to finish the roster off but we have a very good idea of where our team is going heading into the preseason. QBs: In the 4th round of the draft we selected 2nd year Marty Domres out of Columbia. Marty is an above average QB who does alot of things well but does not do any one thing excellently. He is no threat to scramble. In the 5th round of the supplemental portion of the draft we selected another 2nd year player in Bob Lee who hails from Arizona State. Bob is not as polished as Marty but has quite a bit more upside than him and is better at timing his passes and sensing the rush. In the 16th round of the supplemental draft we took rookie Matt Sonntag from Mississippi. Matt has some good potential especially in timing and is more of a threat with his legs, and he might make an ok starter at some point in the future, but right now he is clearly the 3rd string QB. RB: In the 14th round we selected Altie Taylor from Utah State. Altie is another 2nd year playeris an outside runner with good breakaway speed who can catch the ball when necessary and is a very good 3rd down threat on the ground and in the air, but their are many questions about whether Taylor can be a good pro back. In the 9th round of the supplemental portion we selected Ernie Koy out of Texas. Ernie is in the 6th year in the league and would be best described as a savvy vet. Ernie has much better hole recognition, elusiveness and speed to the outside. Ernie may see significant action and will have a great chance to compete for playing time in the preseason. In the 21st and 22nd supplemental rounds, we selected Shaun Kelsey from North Carolina and Alonzo Glenn from Texas. Both players are rookies and don't have much of a chance of seeing much playing time at RB but both will compete for time on special teams. FB: With our 22nd round pick we selected 2nd year pro George Nock from Morgan State. George is a solid blocker, an acceptable power runner and a very good 3rd down receiver. In the 25th round of the supplemental draft we selected rookie Horace Leger from Boston College. Horace is not very good at anything and isn't even a special teams superstar to justify his spot on the roster. We will look for another backup FB in free agency TE: With our 18th pick we selected Willie Grate from South Carolina State. Willie is in his 2nd year and does everything well. He is a good blocker and a great receiver and may be our best skill position player. We selected Chip Glass in the 8th round of the supplemental draft. Chip is in his 2nd year after attending Florida State and is a very good run blocker. He is also a solid pass catcher and will serve as our long snapper this season. Rookie Harry Torres from Northern Illinois was a supplemental pick in the 26th round and is a project but he can contribute immediately on special teams and could long snap in an emergency. WRs: We used our 16th round pick to select rookie Ron Shanklin from North Texas. Ron is a big play threat who runs good routes and has room to improve. In the 17th round we picked 6th year vet Bob Hayes. Bob is our best receiver already and has a very good shot of taking his game to the next level. In the 10th round of the supplemental draft, we selected rookie Donnie Williams from Prarie View A&M. He has no chance of ever seeing the field. In the 19th supplemental round we took Kendall Johnson, a rookie from Pittsburgh. Kendall has some upside and in the ideal situation would be our 4th WR but we probably have to make him our 3rd WR. In the 20th supp. round we took rookie Deon Thill from Oklahoma State. Deon is only slightly better than Donnie Williams and might not make the roster either.

Preseason Preview continued
Now we will take a look at the offensive and defensive linemen we drafted: Centers: We used our 6th round pick on Bob Hyland from Boston College. Bob is one of the strongest players in the league (43 reps in the strongest man comp) and is exceptional in both run blocking and pass protection. Hyland is entering his 4th year in the league. In the 23rd round, we selected 8th year vet Greg Larson from Minnesota. Larson is a good blocker, who is more adapt at pass protection. Neither center is a candidate to long snap. Offensive Guards: In the 2nd round we selected another Golden Gopher, 3rd year pro Gale Gillingham. Gale is one of the best run blockers in the league and is also very good at pass protection. In the 5th round we nabbed Mike LaHood from Wyoming. Mike is also very strong (44 reps in the strongest man comp) and while a good blocker right now, he has alot of room to improve, especially in pass protection. Guy Dennis from Florida was selected in the 3rd supplemental round. Guy is not the strongest lineman around, but the 2nd year vet can pass protect a little. He looks like a career backup tho. In the 17th round of the supplemental draft we acquired rookie Roman Peterman from Boston College. Peterman is nothing special and might not even last the entire preseason. Offensive Tackles: Our 1st round draft pick was 2nd year pro Mike Wilson from Dayton. Mike also had 44 reps in the strongest man comp, and is good at both run and pass blocking, with a slight edge to the run. Our 3rd round pick was Wayne Moore from no college. Wayne is very developed for a rookie and has a ton of potential as a pass blocker. When all is said and done, he could be one of the best ever. In the 2nd round of the supplemental draft we selected 8 year vet Bob Vogel who attended Ohio State. Bob is a savvy vet who should do a solid job as the primary backup on the OLine but if we have any injuries we could be in big trouble. Our 12th round supplemental pick is Malcolm Gaines out of Louisville. Malcolm is another rookie and while expectations aren't high for him he could surprise everyone and find a spot on the active roster. Defensive Ends: In the 9th round, we selected rookie Al Cowlings from Southern California. Al doesn't have much room to improve, but he is already established as a good DE who should be able to put pressure on opposing QBs. Our 10th round pick was 3rd year pro Marty Baccaglio from San Jose State. Marty is average against the run and pretty good rushing the passer. With our 1st round supplemental pick we took 7th year pro Dick Ivey from Tennessee. Ivey can't stop the run, but should see alot of time on passing downs. Our 13th round supplemental pick is 5th year vet Bruce Anderson from William and Mary. Bruce is another DE who can't stop the run, but he is a solid pass rusher. Defensive Tackles: In the 7th round we were priveliged to select 2nd year pro Waddey Harvey from Clemson. Waddey isn't the best run stopper, but he will provide pressure up the middle with solid technique plus good play diagnosis and punishing hits. In the 8th round we drafted 6th year vet Carlton Oats from Florida A&M. Carlton can't stop the run too well either but he can pass rush and hit people. Our 0th round supplemental pick was 8th year pro Sam Silas from Southern Illinois. Sam is an adequate backup who can do a few things adequately, but is a bit undersized for DT. Rookie Preston Walsh from Davidson was selected in the 14th supplemental round. Preston has some room to improve but he will most likely see limited playing time his 1st year.

Preseason Preview We'll finish up the preview with the Linebackers, defensive backs and specialists. Middle LBs: Our 19th round pick was Dick Absher from Maryland, a 4th year pro. Dick's biggest strength is his ability to rush the passer but he is also good at playing zone and bump and run defense. His run D is subpar. In the 11th supplemental round we selected our oldest vet, 9th year pro Nick Buoniconti out of Notre Dame. Nick also can't stop the run and his biggest strength is playing zone and bump and run defense. Rookie Raymond Schultz from Arizona State rounds out the middle LBs and was selected in the 24th supplemental round. Raymond doesn't have alot of talent, but he does have some upside in man and zone defense. Outside LBs: Olen Underwood, a 6th year vet out of Texas was drafted in the 20th round and looks to be our top OLB and will start on the weakside. Olen can stop the run and rush the passer but his coverage ability are a little lacking. In the 21st round, Bob Matheson, a 4th year pro out of Duke, was our selection. Bob is a strong pass rusher and is decent in all types of pass coverage. His run defense is adequate. Bob Grant was selected in the 7th supplemental round, he does alot of things well, but nothing spectacularly. He is entering his 3rd season. Rookie Melvin Ingram from Michigan rounds out the LB corps as he was selected in the 23rd supplemental round. Melvin has some future growth potential, but the fact that he can't play special teams hurts his long term future with the team. Cornerbacks: 5th year pro Emmitt Thomas from Bucknell was our 11th round pick. Emmitt is a great all around corner and should get the starting nod on the right side. 8th year vet Bennie McRae from Michigan was selected in the 12th round. McRae is a tall physical corner who can stop the run and is great in bump and run coverage. He should get the nod at the nickel spot. In the 4th supplemental round, we acquired rookie Steve Tannen from Florida. Steve is strictly a coverage corner and will also likely see some time on kick returns. 15th round supplemental pick, rookie Johnny Fairweather from Indiana, looks like a solid corner, who should see some playing time, but he is probably the 5th CB on the team at this time. Our 24th round supplemental pick, rookie Raymond Jones out of Southern University looks like the steal of the draft. Raymond has all the skills and is very similar to Bennie McRae. If we needed to Raymond could be our kick returner, but we may choose to not risk the injuries. Safeties: Our 13th round pick, 3rd year vet John Dockery from Harvard will get the starting nod at FS barring injury. Dockery is a little undersized compared to the modern safety but he can do it all. In the 15th round, we selected 2nd year pro Jim Hill from Small College. Jim is also a very well rounded safety but is undersized. He has also nearly reached max potential. Our 6th round supplemental pick is 7th year vet Jimmy Warren from Illinois. Jimmy is a fairly solid veteran safety who knows how to play man coverage. Our 18th round supplemental pick was rookie Roy Vazquez from Assumption. He has a little potential but he's more of a roster filler guy. Punter: Rookie Julian Fagan from Mississippi was our 27th round supplemental pick and may be the best punter in the league. He has a huge leg with a ton of hang time, and he is fairly well at hitting the directional kick. Julian can do a serviceable job holding on FGs and XPs. Kicker: Another rookie, R.J. Reier from Monmouth, NJ was our 28th round pick. FGs and XPs may be a total adventure for us with R.J. kicking and if someone better comes along, we may have to make a move to bring them in.

Filling out the preseason roster is a key issue. We have 7 spots to fill on the 60 man roster, and I'd definitely like to start by bringing in a 4th QB to battle Matt Sonntag for the 3rd QB spot.
The only candidates for the 4th QB spot are all rookies. Marty McKenzie from Virginia Tech is rated 8/31 and his best strength is his scrambling ability. He can't complete the long pass and his intangibles (sense rush, timing, read defense, 2 minute drill) are all below average. Geoff Castillo from Louisville is rated 9/29 and his best strength is his timing. He also has shown some good ability in the 2 minute drill and could serve as a kick holder. Kenny Crane from Wyoming is rated 8/30 and is a good short to intermediate passer but he doesn't have the intangibles. He could also serve as a kick holder. I really like Castillo's intangible ability and decide to sign him to a 1 year, 20K contract. I dont like our 3rd and 4th RBs so I am going to bring in a guy to add better depth. Rookie RB Sammy Simonain from Navy is rated 23/46 and looks like a very good receiver out of the backfield. We sign him to the league minimum salary, 1 year 20K. We also need a solid backup FB who we can develop. Horace Leger will just not cut it. I've set my eye on rookie FB Les Reier (22/56) out of Clemson. Les has alot of potential, both as a blocker and a receiver. He can get the league minimum. We also need to bring in more talent at WR. We sign Chad Norton (11/33) from Texas A&M and Brett McKnight (12/32) from Illinois to minimum rookie contracts. We also need some more depth in the trenches and decide to sign C Irving Douglas (14/26) from Southern California. Irving can not only provide an emergency center but longsnap as well. 1 year, 20K LG Travis McCarthy (19/48) from Arkansas-Monticello has a ton of talent and looks like a guy who could be very good in the future. 1 year, 20K. Bob Vogel doesn't like the signing, but he isn't good enough for his opinion to count. I see a kicker I like in rookie Scott Curtis (23/47) from Delaware. I like him alot better than R.J. Reier and decide to sign him to the rookie minimum. Rookie DT Floyd Furlong (23/46) from Southern California has alot of potential and could beat out Sam Silas and Preston Walsh at this point. Rookie FS Alan Brant (19/50) from Nebraska is alot better than Roy Vazquez and a guy the Dolphins need. We also need a guy who can return punts and sign 4 year vet FS Ken Houston (17/31) from Prarie View A&M. 1 year, 50K This puts us at 64 men on the roster, meaning we need to make some cut downs. I decided to dump RB Alonzo Glenn, K R.J. Reier, FB Horace Lager and FS Roy Vazquez.

Our 2nd preseason game of the 1970 season is also at home. This time the Washington Redskins come to town. The line on the game is even. Hopefully we can pull out the W.
