TCU is proud to introduce the newest Fightin' Horned Frogs. As Coach Purple is fond of saying, "I hate freshman. You stake your life, your career, on a bunch of 18 year old kids, and if they suck, well, you're SCREWED." Coach Purple has said he plans on redshirting the entire class, depending on future injuries. The newcomers are, in order of their signings:
When Coach Purple saw the ratings given his class of recruits, he almost had a coronary. If not for the oxygen tank nearby from the Michael Jackson incident last year, it could have been a short tenure at TCU. "We were expecting higher evaluations based on the scouting and Ath. Prep #'s we had when these guys were recruited. I guess our scout, Deep South being a third-class scout with low ratings will kill our classes for one more year, at least." RB Graham Elliot has come in ready to play, but the Frogs were expecting more in the future category in him, as well as MANY others. Atkins, for example, was scouted 67+, with a 99 prep score, and "look what they done to my boy," as Don Corleone would say. Oh well, we'll give them a year off and see what develops (har,har).

Predictions: " I make no apologies about scheduling two lower ranked teams for the year's new opponents. We are a team in need of success, not a team in need of a couple of ass-kickings," said Coach Purple. " I know comparing pre-season rankings, we should go 8-3, play in a bowl game, and say 'Rah, Rah, TCU' all spring long. However, redshirting our freshmen class leaves too many holes unfilled. Therefore, I think it more likely the Horned Frogs should set their sights on a winning mark. My prediction for the 2003 season is.....6-5. With a few breaks, and no bad injuries, 7-4 is a possibility."

Worth, rating #1 in the nation. Looking at the Rivals.com list of 2003 recruits shows the work that will need to be done to get anywhere near last years crop. Texas has only 4 players in the Hot 100, 2 of which are not recruitable with the standards set by the Chancellor. In our 5 state area, Oklahoma and Arkansas have no recruits and Louisiana has but 1. Likewise, 2 of our more needful areas, QB and TE, are relatively bare as far as high-caliber athletes go. A few recruits to watch are:
Coach Purple had this to say at the Frog Club luncheon at Cattleman's Steak House, "I hope you don't think last year was indicative that recruiting top players is a breeze each year. You don't see the hour upon hour of research and legwork put in by our scouts (many of whom are really not very good). WEEK 2- Let's Play Ball
The Game: TCU (0-0)(-2) @ California (0-1) Atendance: 37,600 Sunny, 84 degrees Year 2 of the Coach Purple Reign began on a glorious day in Berkeley and ended with such excitement the Horned Frog mascot soiled his costume. Needless to say, the mascot was not invited to fly back to Ft. Worth on the team plane. TCU held Cal after the kickoff and, after a poor punt, moved 44 yards to take a 7-0 lead. After holding again, the Frogs went 61 yards for another TD and a 14-0 first quarter lead. With Coach Purple in the locker room getting sick from the apparently poisoned Cali-Mex dinner from Friday night, Cal came roaring back to close the gap to 14-13 at the half on a td and 2 fg. With all nastiness crapped-out (for now), Coach Purple returned for the 2nd half kickoff and, lo and behold, RB Tommy Fleming retured that puppy 99 yards for a score, 21-13 TCU. Unfortunately, California was not going to be quieted so easily, as they proceeded to turn in a td drive of 84 yards and a 59 yd fumble return for td to take a 26-21 lead, failing on a 2pt conversion. TCU responded with a 74 yd drive of its own to regain a 27-26 lead, also failing on a 2 pointer. The fourth quarter saw the Frogs move 62 yards to take a 34-26 lead with 4:22 left in the game and, when the D grabbed an interception with 4:02 to play, the game looked good. However, QB Bobby Leyes overthrew a screen pass which was intercepted by Cal at their 24 yard line (how STUPID was that). The Frog defense gave up another long pass and Cal moved 76 yds, tying the score at 34 with a 2 point conversion with but 1:24 left. Overtime loomed. The Frog offense took over at their 27 yard line and after 2 incompleted passes, shocked Cal with a draw for 19 yds and a first down. 2 passes netted 39 more yards with 10 seconds to go. Coach Purple sent RB Robert Reed for 2 yards up the middle to center the ball, called a last timeout, and K Toby Blanchard, injured earlier in the game, came on to kick the 30 yd GAME WINNER as the gun sounded to end the game. FROGS WIN!!! Coach Purple, after the game, said " Gotta go take a dump, sorry." Their is defintely much less quality for a program our our stature to chose from. Far fewer players are in our travel area, and far fewer players seem to care about Academics than last year. We will have to settle for some lower quality players, it seems.

WEEK 4
The Game: Auburn (2-0)(+2) @ TCU (1-0) Attendance: 35,700 89 degrees, Scalding Televised: TV4 A decent crowd found their way into Amon Carter Stadium. The sweltering heat may have kept some away, as the Frogs were on TV. Spectators were thrilled when Ozzy Osborne came out to sing the Star Spangled Banner. However, Ozzy, apparently not being aware of the country he was in, or the reason he was in Ft. Worth, started singing some obscure Black Sabbath song and proceeded to pull-out a horned frog. As he was preparing to bite the toads' head off, Coach Purple picked a football off the sideline equipment table and flung it at Ozzy. Showing better ability than TCU QB Bobby Leyes, the ball smacked Ozzy in the stomach and sunk-in about 4 inches, causing Mr. Osborne to drop the horned frog, which skittled away to freedom. Ozzy bit the ball instead, which exploded in his face and knocked his glasses off. He was helped off the field, being hit dozens of times by little TCU souvenir footballs. As for the game, TCU took control from the start as RB Robert Reed and QB Bobby Leyes had great games (apparently, Bobby heard the laughs about Coach Purple outdoing him, and gave extra effort).TCU had stout defense when it mattered, as Auburn made 5 trips into the red-Zone and came away with a total of only 14 points. Auburn scored a td and 2-point conversion with 2:31 left to narrow the final score a bit. Punter Orlando Riddols had a horrible game, averaging only 27.3 yards per kick, prompting Coach Purple to send a scout out immediately to find a punter for next year.DE Gino Browning was named Defensive Player of the Week nationally. Way to go, Gino!! WEEK 5
The Game: E. Carolina (0-3)(+23) @ TCU (2-0) Attendance: 35,100 89 degrees, Stifling Another horribly hot afternoon greeted the Horned Frog faithful in Cowtown, along with the 10 Pirate fans who showed up as well. Jon Bon Jovi was to open the game with the National Anthem, but by the time he walked to the 50- yard line to begin, the crap on his hair had melted and made some kind of horrific mask on Jons' face. As he squirmed in horror and shock, the crowd thought that he was singing, as it all sounds the same from him, and gave him a long ovation. Coach Purple said of the game, "When our defense gives-up only 222 total yards, you expect an easy game. Missed field goals, turnovers, more horrid punting and red zone failures made it into a huge battle." Tied 7-7 at half, the Pirates took the lead briefly in the 3rd quarter 14-7, before TCU decided to play. The heat may have caused E. Carolina problems in the 4th quarter, as Frog Power finally came to the fore with a tying td late in the 3rd, a field goal with 12:51 left in the game to take the lead, and a final TD with 3:01 left to seal the deal. It wasn't pretty, but TCU is still 3-0. Final Score: TCU 24 E. WEEK 6
The Game: TCU (3-0)(-8) @ Cincinnati (1-2) Attendance: 29,700 50 degrees, Rain Television: TV4 In a driving rain, TCU took the opening kickoff and moved methodically down the field, taking what was offered in small bits. 7 plays and 78 yards later, Horned Frog faithful felt neither chilled nor wet as a TD and 7-0 lead resulted. The defense was somewhat taken aback by the rain and failed to hold the lead as the Bearcats marched down to tie the score, 7-7. The ensuing drive encapsulated the rest of the day, as the Toads again took small chunks of turf, over and over, moving a smooth 40 yards in 14 plays. Unfortunately, the drive ended with a fourth down incompletion and the game was downhill from there. Cincy put 2 TD on the board in the 2nd quarter, wrapped around a Frog field goal, to take a 21-10 halftime lead. A back-and-forth 3rd quarter turned ugly for Froggies everywhere as Cincy scored 17 more points in the 4th to extend the lead to 38-10 before TCU scored a meaningless late TD to end the game, and their perfect start of the season. Coach Purple was beside himself (as noone else had the balls to be beside him) after the game. "We usually prevail in the 4th due to superior conditioning, but today, Cincinnati showed us how much work we still have to do to get where we are trying to go. What a shame." Recruiting: We had 5 athletes turn to other schools this week and, while none was a surprise, each negative is still a negative. On a brighter note, we have several new players visiting our campus to add to the ones previously enticed to Ft. Worth.

WEEK 7
The Game: Army (0-4)(+21) @ TCU (3-1) Attendance: 34,700 88 degrees, Hellish Holy Moly, Batman! It was hotter than Heidi Fleiss' little black book as Adam West came out to open the contest with the National Anthem, which he actually knew. Unfortunately, halfway through the song, when Adam said "Stars," the crowd yelled back "Stars," a la the Dallas Stars fans at American Airlines Center in Dallas. When 34,000 or so people yell "Stars" and you aren't prepared, you tend to get a bit flustered. Batman got A LOT flustered, and when he looked-up and saw a Cadet with a precision drill rifle, he had a flashback and charged the young man, shouting "KAPOW" or something like that. Unfortunately, the Cadet was awake and flattened Mr. West, thus ending the pre-game ceremonies. Adam was released from the hospital several hours later. As for the game, TCU marched with some precision, up and down the field, much of the game, amassing 497 total yards. However, 4 turnovers, pitiful punting and many penalties held the score down, and the Frogs led only 10-0 at the half. When Army closed to within 10-7 by the end of 3 quarters, the momentum appeared to be swinging, but TCU rose in the 4th once again as Army began to tire. A 10 point flurry to begin the final stanza put the game away, and TCU left with a stellar 4-1 mark for the year. Recruiting: We must take the good with the bad. Our first commitment has come in this week, but also our harshest reminder of how far we have to go still. One of our brightest hopes, DE J.J. McCaslin, #6 national recruit, has declined our offer and signed instead with Oregon. 4 other negatives were also received this week. The Game: Memphis (3-2)(-8) @ TCU (4-1) Attendance: 37,500 45 degrees, Stormy Television: TV4 A heavy thunderclap greeted Dallas Maverick Steve Nash as he came to midfield to sing the Anthem today. A great surprise greeted the fans as one of the Spice Girls slogged out to midfield with Steve. The point guard said he couldn't sing for shit, and handed the mic to Jeri. Lo and behold, the thoughts of 37,000+ were shown to be true as the Spice Girl proved she couldn't sing either. Noone told Jeri she was not Memorex but, rather, live, and she began to lip-synch the words. Noone knows if, being a foreigner, she knew the lyrics, but it took her a while to figure out the noise was booing, not singing and, when she looked around, Spice Girl found Mr. Point Guard had snuck away, much to her embarrassment. At this point, the football game commenced, and it is too bad it did, if you are a Horned Frog. Losing the total yardage battle 511 to 205 and the first down fight 28 to 10, TCU turned in a horrid performance. In fact, the offense was so inept, QB Bobby Leyes was benched in the 4th quarter after a 10 for 25, 2 interception effort. TCU managed 0 sacks, punted 7 times for a nasty average, threw interceptions like a holiday party and had a leading rusher with 28 yards. Said Coach Purple, "DAMN! Each time we play a good team, we SUCK. I guess that means we aren't any good. I will have to keep scheduling cup-cakes in non-conference and hope C-USA never gets any better or we are in truuubbbuuulllllll." Each has another year left on their contracts, and the University and I keep to our word. If tey choose, all will return for 2004." The game was intensely boring for most of the afternoon with TCU taking a 6-0 lead in the 2nd on a 6-yard Leyes TD pass. Blanchard missed the extra point, giving an openning to the Cougars to take the halftime lead, 7-6,with a late td and conversion. The second half openned as poorly as the first ended, as Houston took a 14-6 lead into the 4th quarter. Time was winding down rapidly, Coug fans were whooping and hollering, and the outlook wasn't looking any rosier as the Toads prepared to punt with 5:05 left in the game. Orlando Riddols got off one of his patented 30-yd rockets, which must have startled the Cougar return man, who fumbled the ball. TCU pounced on the turnover, and the game was ON once again. 2 plays later, with 4:25 on the clock, Leyes passed 25-yds to Korey Schepper for a TD, and a 2-point conversion was good to tie the score at 14. After the kickoff, Houston threw an ill advised pass which was intercepted by CB Roy Martinez and returned to the Cougar 12-yd line. Being conservative, the Horned Frogs lost a few yards, but K Toby Blanchard redeemed himself, booting a 42-yd field goal with 2:55 to play. Houston could go nowhere on the ensuing drive, turned the ball over on downs, and Blanchard struck again from 25 yards with 5 seconds left. Coach Purple said, of the late FG, "Hit 'em while they are down, I say. Pound who you can, while you can, because ssomedays, you will be the poundee." Recruiting: We received 3 more commitments this week, making a total of 6. Highlighting the week was Texas DE Irving Gustin from Kingwood H.S. in Kingwood, Texas, ranked #163 nationally. We got 4 more rejection notices, including top 100 WR Tommy Blodgett, who chose to attend BYU. Based on Prep scores, none of these recruits will be any help next year, but will hopefully be ready to contribute in the 2005 season if all goes well. In The Fold:

Coach Purple doesn't remember what book that starts, but it couldn't have been any scarier than this football game. Southern Mississippi tore the Toads UP. QB Bobby Leyes, as is his wont every other week, was benched again for a 5 of 27, 3 interception effort. P Orlando Riddols had a 32.3 yard average on 8 punts. It was so overwhelming, the Frogs had 8 drives last under 1 minute...Futility on a grand scale. Recruiting: We had a pretty good week for pledges as 5 new recruits signed on the dotted line. All 5 are from Texas or Arkansas and 4 will eventually bolster the defense that is giving-up over 25 points a game. Again, these athletes will need to be red-shirted to grow and learn. On a darker note, we have lost out on our top QB hopeful again this week, as well as our top TE recruit. We now have 11 players visiting, including:

WEEK 11
The Game: TCU (5-3)(-3) @ U. Alabama-Birmingham (2-6) Attendance: 38,700 61 Degrees, Fair Wow! This game was one of the great debacles in TCU history. We got BLASTED and SHUT OUT by a 2-6 team ranked 40 places lower than ourselves. The same problems cropped-up that have plagued the Frogs all year. Yes, QB Bobby Leyes was benched again. Yes, P Orlando Riddols sucked- 31.4 average. Yes, 4 Frog turnovers and another missed field goal held us down. We managed to give up more than double the first downs and yards we gained, and had an even worse ToP- 22 minutes to 38. All told, Coach Purple said he couldn't remember when he had been more embarrassed. Not worth continuing on about. Recruiting: 3 acceptance e-mails were received this week. We finally landed a QB. Although not a highly rated one, Cornell Coppa is an 84 AthPrep man, which is one of the few decently prepared players we're bringing in for next year. Quinn White, a top 100 recruit, is also on board. Sadly, we lost#42 recruit Maron Buckner and #25 Roderick Hancock to Kentucky and S. Carolina, respectively. We have only 3 players visiting at present, but only two roster spots left anyway. It has not been a bust, but this crop of recruits is not up to the bar we set last year, especially in terms of preparedness for play is concerned. We also are not, apparently, going to land the tight end we needed. In The Fold:

WEEK 13
The Game: Louisville (4-5)(+2) @ TCU (5-4) Attendance: 35,700 82 Degrees, Sunny Another subpar crowd filled Amon Carter Stadium on another hot day in Ft. Worth. A sellout had been hoped for to see and hear the Bush twins sing "America the Beautiful," as the Star Spangled Banner had been a bit of trouble the past 2 years. The crowd rose to see if the twins (We LOVE twins, don't we) might be a bit tipsy from a night out on University Dr., but they seemed fine. Both Jenna and Barbara wore purple t-shirts with giant fake IDs on them, which was amusing. The girls are not great singers, but the Chancellor appreciated a pre-game ceremony without any problems. The game saw the first overtime finish of the Coach Purple era. The game was tight throughout, with first downs tied at 23 and but a 3 yard difference in total yards, with TCU holding a 463-460 edge. For once, QB Bobby Leyes was having an excellent game until, with 13:04 left in the 2nd quarter, he was sacked by two Cardinal defensive lineman and sprained his wrist. Junior Benjamin Galloway came on for the rest of the game but, as he has had to relieve Leyes on many occasions, experience was not a great worry. A 14-14 halftime score became 21-14, TCU, on an 11 yard run by RB Robert Reed. Unfortunately, Louisville tied the game with 9:52 left in the 4th on a 14 yard pass. Then, with 4:14 to play, a Cardinal punt backed the Frogs to their 2-yd line after a penalty on the return. Miraculously, on 1st down QB Galloway hit WR Korey Schepper for 61 yards to the Louisville 37. Inexplicably, TCU RAN the ball 3 straight times to setup a winning field goal, which K Toby Blanchard promptly missed with 1:45 left. Louisville took over and proceeded to throw an interception at the Frog 48 with 0:53 seconds left, but TCU could do nothing, and a final desperation Hail-Mary came up empty, forcing overtime. The Horned Frogs had the ball first, but stalled inside the 10 yard line, forcing a 23-yard field goal by K Blanchard, which he miraculously made. Louisville took over and , after an incomplete pass, threw a 25-yard TD pass to win the game. Coach Purple was semi-distraught after the Frogs 3rd straight loss. Said he, "This one hurts a good bit. The promise of a 5-2 record now is gone, but SMU and the Skillet are ahead, and the winning season we desired is still within our sights. We need to get better across the board." Recruiting: Our recruiting is done. C Jose Coles of TX is our 16th and final recruit for the year. All 16 are top 1000 recruits and top 100 positionally. Not bad, but the Athletic Preparation scores for the class are mostly quite low. It could be 2 years, including a redshirt year, before we see any help from most of them. We failed to get any tight end and we failed to lure a top quarterback to TCU. Plenty of work still to be done, obviously. In The Fold:

WEEK 14: Skillet Time
The Game: TCU (5-5)(-15) @ SMU (0-10) Attendance: 11,100 50 Degrees, Fair Gerald Ford (no, not the President Gerald Ford) Stadium on SMU's campus was not exactly the place to be Saturday as only 11,100 fans showed, and 8,800 were over from Ft. Worth. Most expected a blowout, including the TCU team apparently, as the worst team in the USA faced the Frogs. The Mustangs 0-10 record and 125th ranking proved illusionary on this day as they would not roll over and die, despite TCU advantages of 30-11 in first downs and 420-181 in total yards. It was more the gifts handed out by Frog players that made this exciting. QB Benjamin Galloway threw 3 interceptions on an otherwise outstanding day. The coaches decided going on 4th down was the game plan, as they tried and failed 3 times.SMU started the scoring after the first interception, but TCU came back with a 14-play, 97 yard drive and a Galloway 1 yard run to take a 14-7 lead. The Horned Frogs were on the march again, feeling great, when Galloway threw another INT that Mustang CB Kyle Hape returned 64 yards for the tying score, and a 14-14 halftime game. TCU tried again to put the Ponies away, scoring quickly in the 3rd quarter on a 12 yard pass to Maurice Colins. SMU suddenly became an offensive machine with two drives for scores, the second culminating in a field goal and a 24-21 lead with 6:13 to play. Once again, a penalty on the kickoff caused the Frogs to start a drive inside their 10, at the 7, and penalties eventually moved the ball back to the 2. However, the Mustangs were rapidly running out of gas, and TCU's advantage finally came into play. Small chunk by small chunk, the Toads began the march towards their coveted winning season. Play after play netted 7 to 9 yards, rolling up 1st downs every other play. Down the field they moved, in 12 plays, none longer than 15 yards, to score on a 4 yard Qb draw by Galloway. SMU threw a last second INT, and TCU had won. Coach Purple was happy, yet perplexed, saying "I wish I knew how a 5-5 team could take their rival, 0-10 or not, so lightly. I guess lessons are learned on the field, not in a team meeting. Maybe next year we will understand we are not good enough to take ANYONE for granted. That said, 6-5 is better than 5-6, anyday. RAH!RAH! TCU."
