Would You Pay Him?

Would you re-sign this guy? He'll be a 3 time All-tackle at the end of the year., and I'm currently 50 million under the cap next year. I also have my top 2 CB's asking for the same amounts.

U cant take all 3 of those cap hits in the 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th years.......maybe use a big signing bonus to even that salary out a bit, thats what i do, but i still dont think u will be able to sign all 3, personally i'd keep the db's as long as they have a good health record in the past

salaries explode after about 10 years or so. You'd think only skill players would ask for this much, but everyone but kickers, punters, TE and FB ask for this much money. Although I did just have a TE ask for 10 million the last year of his contract.

I'd try to work out a more cap friendly deal with him. Letting him walk isnt the best idea tho.

Sometimes you just have to make the hard decision to let the future HOFer go. The object of the exercise is to win (actually, yours may be to follow the carreers of interesting players). Signing guys to contracts like this usually stops you from winning. You can basically only have one guy on your roster with contract like this. I tend to make that a QB.

The only way I would let him walk is if he injury prone. Also, jack up his first year price and lower his signing bonus. Then adjust the final years a little bit and get that number down.
What's the salary cap in your league? In mine it's 246mil, so I see a lot of similar contracts.

I would take about 10 million off of his signing bonus and add it to the first year of his contract. That would lower the later cap hits quite a bit. Players will always accept a deal where you take the same amount off of the signing bonus and add it to the first year.

Actually, that's not always true. I've had players turn down deals where ive taken an amount off of the bonus and added more to the first year. I think sometimes players have some kind of pride thing where they won't sign with you unless you take on significant cap hits down the line. It's rare. But I believe it hppens.

That's defintiley true. I've tried lowering the singing bonus 5 million and offering 5.5 million more in the first season and they will decline. They won't take anything but the offer they requested.

This is a prime example of how much I dislike the "new" contract negotiations. On any given year in my league, I have 2-5 guys asking for contracts like this. The longest anyone stays on my team is 8-10 years, and usually they're backups.

The other thing is that it's not only maxed out guys like above, but it's guys with maxed out futures. He hasn't shown me anything yet, so why ask for the huge contract?

well, I didn't re-sign him. I did re-sign my 2 top corners and my top OLB. ANd I signed the tackle on the other side.

My personal way to approach that is to see if you can get him to sign a contract with no signing bonus.

That way if you end up in cap hell, you can cut, trade, or whatever. Especially if he gets hurt, and his ratings drop, you can renegotate without having any left over money from the last contract.

He signed with Miami for 5 years and 102.16 million dollars in week 1.

The last contract I saw that he wanted from me, he wanted around 158 million for 5 years.

This guy is tailor made for the franchise tag. If you are on the verge of winning it all franchise him and keep him another year. Or trade him.

I find you can get quality linemen (in the 50-60's range) pretty cheap on the FA market. I don't think the leap between a tackle rated 61 to this guy is worthing paying tens of millions. You can get a guy in the 60's for $2-4 M per year deal easily.

The only time I spend tens of millions like this is on a QB rated 80 or higher who is healthy. The game places amazinf emphasis on having a good QB and I keep them when I can. Otherwise there are free agent bargains to be had across the board.

Well, at the time, a franchise tag for a tackle meant $11 million, and the 50-60 guys mostly ask for at least $7 million a year.
