Stage 4: Take-off
Quote:
Odds: As a group, the team again struggled to get the sleigh off the ground. Vlad did his best to set a good example, but while no one particular deer really hurt the take-off, their combined lack of effort fared poorly. Vlad then shot into the air at high speed (gassing himself a bit in the power department in the process), but few in the team were able to match him, with Rudolph and his girlfriend Clarisse really slowing the pace. Power was mediocre at best, with Moonbeam a rare exception; Donner and Jingle Bells were the lightweights. Overall, it was an unsatisfactory start once again for the Odds, with a -11 take-off score. Evens: In an unusual incident, the Evens’ lead deer seemed to just stand there for a few moments, adding nothing to the team’s attempt to take-off. Dancer looked frozen, while Blitzen actually backed up a hoof or two. Finally, with the gentle insistence of Sugarplum and Fireball (and no help whatsoever from Egg Nog or Northwind), the team kicked into the air. Blitzen gained some decent speed, but totally ignored any need to actually pull the sleigh. Sugarplum combined both elements well, Dasher dashed, and Egg Nog really put his shoulders into it. Teamwork was rather strong, but the group had dug themselves a deep hole. Their only saving grace is that the Odd team was only ahead of them by a nose! Score: -12 * * * * * Stage 4 Score: Odds -11 Evens -12 Overall Score: Evens +85 and 2 Stages Odds +54 and 1 Stage * * * * * Declare flight magic, Evens!

Stage 4: Flight
Evens:
Blitzen really pegged the navigation, and Dancer basically deferred it all to him. Curiously, Blitzen again completely ignored pulling the sleigh with any power, but blazed out in front at high speed. Dancer did more than his share in both respects, but the real star was Egg Nog, who topped out in each. Dasher and Fireball were pretty worthless, and the rest of the team balanced out for a decent flight. Dancer kept them flying in tune with his teamwork magic, and they netted a +12 score. Odds: As the team reached cruising altitude they enjoyed the stretch of normal weather. Both Moonbeam and Vlad took their navigation a little lightly, but that didn’t matter due to the fine overall teamwork, and Moonbeam’s downright awesome combination of speed and power. Both Vlad and Jingle Bells flew like lightning as well, while Vixen and Silent Night were power mongers. The only real disappointment was Donner. The flight was excellent, gaining a +20 score and widening the stage lead. * * * * * Stage 4 Score: Odds +9 Evens 0 Overall Score: Evens +97 and 2 Stages Odds +74 and 1 Stage * * * * * Declare landing magic, Evens!

Let's give both Rudolph and Clarisse some magic to help with the landings. We need this round.

Stage 4: Landing
Evens:
Swinging into the landing pattern, Blitzen began to buck wildly, careening the sleigh momentarily out of control. Fireball, Northwind, Sugarplum, and Egg Nog could not recover, but thanks to the heroic efforts of Yuletide and Dancer, the damage was minimal. Downward they plunged! Egg Nog and Fireball couldn’t recover from their spin, but Dancer, Yuletide, Blitzen and the others did their jobs. The landing ended up being a good one, a +12. Odds: As the team maneuvered into landing position, both Vlad and Moonbeam were steady at the fore. Jingle Bells excelled, and was aided by Donner and Silent Night, while Rudolph and Vixen flew very awkwardly. Teamwork was quite strong, and as the sleigh met the earth, Moonbeam eased them in and Donner was an absolute rock. No other deer helped out, but it was enough! A +12 landing score pegged the Stage. * * * * * Stage 4 Score: Odds +21 Evens +12 Overall Score: Evens +109 and 2 Stages Odds +86 and 2 Stages * * * * * Endurance and Magic ratings have been updated on the deer. We now hold a brief mini-draft to replace any deer you wish to drop. Remember that each deer that you replace costs a (-5) overall score penalty. For your pick you may either drop a deer from your team and select a replacement, or pass. Odds get the first pick in this stage, and then teams trade off picks until both have passed on consecutive picks. You may still draft later after passing, as long as both teams have not passed on consecutive picks (at which point the draft ends). Proposed draft picks will need to be seconded, but in order to keep things moving, the pick will be official once two hours have gone by regardless of seconding, and the other team may pick. Weather for Stage 5 is Overcast, and weather for Stage 6 is Rain. You may also switch lead deer. Once the draft is over, please proceed to this decision as well as any magic for take-off. Odds are on the clock!

Buck it is. Otherwise, we'd have to take one of the 0 endurance ones and eat the penalties involved. Best to wait until next round on those.

Well, I'm just passing along the sentiments JAG passed along. Speaking of which, both of us will have intermittent internet access for the next few days so we might be a bit slower than normal, at least through the weekend (myself through through the 31st).
I'm pretty sure we're done with drafting for this round. So, for when it gets back to our round, I'll suggest passing. SI

In that case, I'll suggest Vlad and Rudolph for our lead deer this run. SI, I was thinking Rudolph because he's pretty comparable to Evergreen except 1. R has better teamwork by 5 2. E has 5 better maneuverability and 3. R has 1 magic to use vs. Evergreen's 0. Since we're dumping both after this round, might as well put Rudolph in the top slot and use his magic as lead deer where it'll have more effect.
And happy holidays to all. |
