(another) grammar rant

This rant would fall under the category of 'frequently misspelled words on MB's"; my latest pet peeve is "rediculous" - it's spelled "ridiculous". I've been seeing this one a lot lately...

We've been getting some high-profile ones around here lately.

...when it's a possessive - whose - Whose shoes are these?
...when it's a contraction for "who is" - who's - Who's going to the game?

...And even when you're writing in a casual way, like you might be inclined to speak sometimes ... the phrases are could have and would have, even if when you drawl them out it sounds like you're saying "could of" or "would of."

BTW, you spelled your username wrong chief........it's DOGfan. Jesus, get it right. Nothing is more annoying than when someone can't even spell their own name correctly. It's REDICULOUS.

I'd like to take a bunch of kids, stick them on an island and give them television/internet access--but no other contact with the English speaking world-- and an education system that completely avoids grammar and see what their written language looked like after twenty years. I bet that would be fascinating.

Dude, you've just described American English...

To illustrate, when I came over to the US back in 1983, I was a 12 years old french kid with 2 years of English learned in school in France (and let me tell you, the french educationnal system sucks at teaching languages !).
Anyway, I started junior high in 7th grade and the very first quarter I was there, I finished 1st in my English class.
Now, what's wrong with this picture ???

I have an Indian friend, from India as opposed to North America, and his english is better than most Americans. That is especially true regarding his vocabulary. He occasionally breaks out a word that I can't pin right down. It is quite annoying.
