That Jim Kirk fella seems like he smashes up his ships awful quick-like. Maybe he ought'nt to do that.

Can we have a Star Trek where they do not blow up the ship? I remember watching ST:III for the first time and thinking Kirk was bluffing, he'd never blow up the ship. Now they blow the dang thing up every movie it seems like.

It's weird. These are two things that I love: Star Trek and Beastie Boys' "Sabotage", but when you combine them, they just... don't seem to go together at all. It's like beer and cake, or beer and pasta, or beer and something else that just doesn't go with beer...

I suppose I'm content to watch another action-adventure sci-fi movie, but I am pretty ambivalent about that direction for Star Trek. I love the franchise, but miss the more thoughtful elements that served as the foundation for the TV shows. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy phasers and explosions and stuff as much as anyone, but what made them such a treat on the TV shows was that they were fairly rare (later seasons of DS9 aside) and often a result of a failure to resolve conflicts in more clever ways. Hopefully the new TV series will get back to those roots.
In the meantime I guess I'll just enjoy the rebooted Star Trek movies for what they are. |

I think you have, in a paragraph, indicated the differences inherent between a TV show and a movie done in the same universe. You can have a slower moving TV show that is thoughtful way to resolve a conflict. Movies don't necessarily have that luxury - they need to have more action or bigger conflict, because they have to bring in a much more varied customer base.

Given the dreck most of the previous Star Trek films were (especially the later ones), I'm perfectly happy if this is the direction of the films, especially if it can fund some of those more thoughtful, good scifi (bring back actual SF writers to pen stories, maybe?) in TV show form.

Pegg is supposedly a big fan, so they may reel in the things some fans have complained about (I've loved both Abrams films). I think this one is going to deal with Starfleet encroaching on someone else territory while exploring. From the trailer, we know the Enterprise is toast.

Good point. And not only is Pegg a fan, but he's listed as the first co-author of Beyond's script. While it's possible he's telling folks to "hang in there" out of a sense of defensiveness about his work, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if he says Star Trek stuff is on the way.

Considering Quentin Tarantino is my favorite director of all time, I'm completely psyched!

You guys suck. Tarantino adds levels of character dev that need to come out in ST. He also knows how to frame a shot, and his dialogue is very unique. I think it could produce some good results.

Certainly one of the very best of my lifetime, and one of the few truly notable ones afaic. That said however, whether he's a good fit for this particular franchise remains to be seen.

It does depend on what kind of movie. Maybe not a traditional Star Trek (though who knows), but more of a side story involving more... violent resolutions?
