Favorite Rock Act - Elite 8 Free-for-All!

Hi. Just curious to see what happens with BYU's tournament if the elite 8 are all up against each other and people can only vote for one. Will it make any difference, or, in the immortal words of Denny Green, should we "crown their ass"?

Sgt Peppers is the most important/influential album in rock history (I swear Queen's entire style is based on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite).

Led Zeppelin is the most important band.

For all the love that record gets, I'd rather listen to Revolver, the White Album, Abbey Road and even Magical Mystery Tour. Yes, I know it broke all kinds of new ground in recording techniques and broadening the palette of rock/pop, but it's a bit over-rated. If they'd included the first single recorded from those sessions ("Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane") on that record that would change my view, as those are two of the very best songs they ever recorded.

That's why I called it the most important. Much like Citizen Kane for film, it's not the best but it did change the process and even the content of the medium in a lasting way unlike anything before or since.

I never could stand the Beatles at any level. Easily one of my least favorite bands of all time. Damn their influences and those that have followed their path. I can appreciate how they've impacted the industry and I love a lot of Brit Rock and others from there, but not them.

Somewhat true for me. I occasionally listen to the odd Beatles track, but I listen to Queen more. Beatles got my vote on "influence". Never listen to any of the other 6.

For me the Beatles got things rolling, and naturally a few select bands progressed and improved things from there. Well right up until around the year 2000 when it pretty much went down the shitter.

How sure are you of that? I don't go out of my way to listen yo any old bands anymore, but I am quite familiar with the collections of all of the top 8 acts, and the Beatles are fairly conclusively at the top, IMO. I would listen to them first over the other acts near the top.

I think if you think the Beatles votes are purely for influence, I believe you're wrong. There are likely many here as familiar with them and enjoy them as much as I do.

this is how a lot of people voted during the main tourney. Yes it was annoying but not totally unexpected.

Their music has been pretty much everywhere for 50 years now. It's unlikely a music listener doesn't have an opinion on the Beatles, backed up by years of having heard their music. A Beatles vote is almost certainly not about "influence" but the fact that everyone KNOWS the music, you know?

I doubt greatly many of us would pick the Beatles first among our favorites to listen to, among the top 260 bands or whatever this was. But majority is the rule and we can only vote on the matchups in front of us.

I don't go out of the way to listen to the Beatles anymore, but I don't spin OK Computer that much anymore either, and it's my favourite album of all time. If I happen to hear a Beatles song, I'll be singing along or playing air bass, and with the exception of Revolution 9 I wouldn't change the station if any of their tracks came on. Pink Floyd from Saucerful of Secrets to the Wall is in the same ballpark for me, but I do still spin them all fairly regularly despite having heard them at least as much as anything the Beatles have done.

I wasn't talking about the beatles but rather about the whole tourney in general. I myself love the beatles and did vote for them. And I do understand. If all you listen to is the radio and have never delved further then of course your influence on what you like is given to you. NOt everyone is a music geek. People like what they like and if they don't they don't care. Doesn't matter. It's the kind of stuff that drives music geeks crazy just because we like to worry about such things

Of the final eight, the Beatles are the one that I'd take utter silence over more than any of the others (though the tedium of extended Hendrix listening probably gets that treatment from me as well).

Rubber Soul is the worst album the Beatles ever released. Even counting the full version of Yellow Submarine.
