Until reading his obit I don't think I ever realized that Gary Lewis (of GL & The Playboys musical fame) was his son.

I never particularly acquired the taste for his style of physical comedy, but that train wreck of a telethon never failed to entertain me or blow my mind.

I'm with sloppy; his heyday was a bit before my time and movies like The Nutty Professor just never appealed to me. It's like...I feel like I got that from Jim Carrey already (and tired of it). It's possible the Lewis & Martin routine would resonate better, but I haven't sought it out.

So, it's the telethon. Which...yeah, train wreck.

He was one of my early comedy favorites. I grew up in the 1970s watching many of his movies on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon - along with the rotation of Abbott & Costello, Red Skelton, Ma and Pa Kettle, Hope & Crosby.

Maybe now they might release The Day the Clown Cried.

I kind of obsessively watched the telethon as a pre-teen. I still don't know why, I didn't know most of the people he had on.

Later on, I found out he was pretty much a jerk.

Still doesn't stop me from throwing in the odd glayvin in casual conversation.

I didn't realize the telethon was gone or that it had such a sad end - 21 hours, to 6, to 2, to gone.

It was definitely a big part of my childhood - I don't remember actually watching it much, but I associate it with the end of summer and the start of school. And I remember the Boston affiliate putting on a ton of it's own telethon programming, with all the big local names, and once, a kid in my neighborhood with MS made an appearance, which was a big deal in the neighborhood.

Otherwise, I didn't know Lewis at all aside from his cameos in his much later years.
