English MP murdered

Jo Cox was shot and stabbed yesterday outside her constituency surgery, by a white 50-something local man with a history of mental illness.

Extremely sad, has resulted in a sudden awareness of how exposed many people in public life are even here where guns are not common (it looks like this the bloke used an old service revolver)

Shades of the attack on a US politician a couple of years back.

Sad story. I guess her killer was taking the Brexit thing too seriously?

Mental issues. Loner. A common scenario in a lot of the US mass shootings I think.

My guess is a mentally vulnerable person got swept up in the toxic rhetoric that both sides have been spewing.

I believe the police found neo-nazi paraphernalia at his home. He was also photographed at a Britain First demonstration. Has either report been discredited yet? The 'crazed loner' angle being taken by many people on social media seems to be a way of disputing the idea that this was a political act.

The rhetoric has been aggressive and times hysterical (e.g. Osborne's punitive budget speech), but the truly toxic statements have coming from one camp, and one camp only. Farage's unofficial leave campaign has been responsible for some truly repulsive, inhumane, misanthropic shit over the past couple of weeks. It's poisoned the well of our public debate.
