Movie Quote Draft voting thread

First of all, let me apologize for the delays. I started this draft because work was pretty slow, and so of course that meant an unplanned emergency trip to Asia. I think the jet lag is finally gone, so I'm trying to get this going again.

Here is where we will all vote on the winners. It is up to the voter to determine whether a quote fits correctly in the category. Participants may vote, but not for themselves. Please list your top three picks in order. First place votes receive 5 points, second place receives 3 points, third place receives 1 point. Voters may ask participants to explain picks, and participants may preemptively explain picks that they feel the need to.

Korme - has the strongest top 4 in my opinion, and 2 great picks at the end
Surtt - strong top 3 and 7th rounder might be the best in the entire draft

3) Maple Leafs

A few movies missing that I thought would show up, but I guess with the categories there were bound to be some things that would limit it. I think 2-6th place are a toss up and my picks were based on each of these guys having one of my favorite single quotes each. Korme nailed this though, top to bottom.

Why you should vote for me. Everyone else participating in this draft are assholes!~

OK, to be serious. My goal was to pick not just great quotes from movies, but quotes that had infiltrated popular culture, and not just for a summer or a spell, but for forever.

I made a huge mistake in not taking "Life is like a box of chocolates" and I'll forever rue the day. It was on my list, it was available, I just flubbered it up. But I'm happy with all my picks, and yes I know my last 3 picks will probably lose me as many votes as it will gain, but it was always my intent to close out my draft in that fashion, to game the system, if you will, even if I didn't know which quotes they would be exactly.

So yeah, look at every list and you can't argue that mine is not clearly the most world wide, all time, quoted list of quotes. If that's not worth your vote, then get the hell out of my house.

All the quotes and categories are equally good, so those become irrelevant, imo. Top three based on who had more of my favorite movies:

1. Breeze
2. ntndeacon
3. korme

1. Korme
As has been mentioned before, he really just nailed it top-to-bottom. There isn't a weak quote in there, and he got tremendous value throughout the draft. I really enjoy the run he had from the 5th to the 7th rounds.

2. Surtt
He was a step behind Shorty, and it's only because I don't like 'I'm the king of the world!' in the 3rd round. It's a perfectly fine quote, but I think it's too early there. I absolutely love every single other quote on his list, and agree that the Inigo Montoya line was the steal of the draft.

3. Maple Leafs
Although I like both of the quotes, weak entries in the Drama and Action/Adventure categories doomed him to third in my book.

I could honorable mention half of the other candidates here. Suicane, you missed the top three based on Pee Wee - which is incredibly quotable, but terrible value in the 5th - and your bottom three not quite resonating with me. I also feel like the better Bond quote is 'No Mr. Bond - I expect you to die.' I'm aware that I'm wrong about that last one, but I'll live with being wrong.

NobodyHere and Breeze are probably my closest runners-up. NH loses points with me because 'Houston, we have a problem' was a huge quote before it was in the movie, so it doesn't resonate as well with me, and the fact that I haven't seen In the Heat of the Night. I love the Airplane quote as the closer. Breeze lost points from me for his final three picks. None are bad picks per se, but I think there were better options out there.

Why My Draft is Good: I ended up with 3 really great "quotable" quotes, or quotes you tend to see get repeated in society, shows, etc. (Precious, Go ahead make my day, and Game over man). I got a quote from one of the most quotable movies of all time (It's just a flesh wound). I wouldn't say my draft was the best, but I feel it's worthy of votes.

What I Would Change: I like the Silence of the Lambs quote, and it's certainly one that people remember. However, looking through the rest of round 2, I would have been better served with something else. I think the key to a quote draft is something short, sweet, and memorable. That doesn't fit the bill. I'm honestly not too disappointed in the Mean Streets quote. Early 70s was weak after Godfather and the quote is good, albeit a bit long. I also liked my last quote, though I'm not sure the movie is well known enough for it to be memorable.

Again, any votes were appreciated, but I know it's not the top list.

My vote:
1. Surtt - Seemed he was always a step ahead of me in taking a quote. His top 7 were fantastic. Not big on his bottom 3, but everyone had holes. Can't think of anyone else who had a run like he did.
2. Korme - great top 5 and some nice value picks at the end.
3. DavidCorperial - This was tough. So many good drafts. I specifically liked some of the movies DC picked, so that was the tie breaker.

One of the things I was curious about is which quotes got taken from very quotable movies (Princess Bride, Animal House, Anchorman, etc.). There were a few movies I was shocked didn't get picked. I thought Caddyshack would be one of the first sports movies taken. And I thought the Western category would be the toughest, which I think it was, as it was generally the weakest quote in most of the competitors lists.

For me, everyone did really well in the first five rounds. It's the bottom half of the draft where things got separated for me. So here's my top five

5) Suicane75 - For the first seven picks, I thought you were going to win. But the last three picks, while I would agree are great quotes, are not what I consider movie quotes. I had to dock you for that.

4) Breeze - Great top six picks. I thought the ninth round pick was great value, but the other bottom picks didn't resonate quite as much with me.

3) larrymcg - This is where it really gets tough to pick. First eight picks were very strong. The last two rounds were where I think you fell behind the top two.

2) korme - I had to pick nits to decide who my winner was. For me, comedy was the strongest category in the draft, and the comedy quote was the weakest in the category. The rest of the draft was outstanding, especially the value in the last two rounds.

1) Maple Leafs - Like korme, there was only one pick which I felt was a weaker one. Like korme, it was in the eight round. It was a tough decision, but I think you edged korme by the narrowest of margins.

This was one I though was going to go around fourth or fifth round. Very surprised it didn't get taken.

Cinderalla story. You'll get nothing and like it. So I got that going for me, which is nice. It's in the hole. I'll bet you were something before electricity. Well, we're waiting.

Shocked. I don't know if I've ever played a round of golf in my life without someone doing a caddyshack quote.

Surprised that Baldwin's speech from Glengary Glenn Ross didn't get a late round flyer. Might be that the year/category was so strong.

And.

Seriously people. Come ON. You guys missed two perfect Arnie quotes.

"If it bleeds, we can kill it."

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women."

Early 80s (well, 80s in general) is stacked. I really wanted the Cinderella story quote from CaddyShack, but my Eastwood quote blocked me from it. That's part of the genre thing though. So many good comedy quotes left on the table. It's a deep area.

That might be my favorite quote ever. I burned up my categories/year combo before I thought I could steal it near the end - plus, it's hard to pick out a single line from that rant that sticks out.

That whole scene is classic, but the best lines are the simple "Coffee is for closers" and "ABC Always Be Closing"

I think the two best ones are:

"Coffee is for closers!"

and

"Will you go to lunch? Go to lunch! WILL you GO to LUNCH!?!?"

First of all, congrats to everyone. This was an interesting draft, and it showed. Everyone received multiple votes, and seven received first place votes. But in the end, the top five separated themselves from the bottom five.

5th place - Maple Leafs (19 points/3 first place votes)
4th place - NobodyHere (22/3)
3rd place - ntndeacon (23/2)
2nd place - Surtt (28/3)

And the winner of the movie quote draft...

korme - (34/4)

Thanks to everyone who participated and voted.

My first win!

Thanks for running it Umbrella. I'm glad the movie snob in me has finally paid off in some fashion...
