Sadly did not realize he was still alive when his son died a few years back (My bad, but I feel like reporting outlets also neglected that fact).

Though I pretty much stopped watching the NFL regularly 7-8 years ago, NFL films music still finds it's way into my playlists regularly. The classic NFL Films shows themselves were formative for me in terms of sports, and are still masterclasses in how to package and present sports highlights.

I feel bad for current generations who will never experience that stuff in the same way, in an era where we now have a zillion replays from all angles instantly, and package highlight reels like that are largely unnecessary.

I commented to a friend on FB - one who had interned/worked at NFL Films - that I'd much rather watch those old shows on NFLN now than the studio shows they currently show around the clock. Give me the history of the game rather than a stable of ex-players bloviating every day of the offseason.

Same thing for "This Week In Baseball". It was so cool seeing all of the action (and bloopers) on Saturdays growing up. I guess there is something to be said about anticipating a special treat instead of having it all being taken for granted (knowing you can still catch glimpses of it at the ballpark).

My son still has the huge DVD series that NFL Films did for each Super Bowl season. That contributed a lot to his NFL fanaticism.

Yes, I thought of TWIB when I heard this too and wondered how interesting it might be to watch an old season of it.

There are a few episodes of TWIB on Youtube - still pretty fun to watch.

In the 1970s, can someone remind me of when and how I would have seen NFL Films clips/shows? I know they produced them because they're on my son's DVDs but I don't remember seeing the highlights with that great narration on Sundays. And I don't recall a regularly scheduled NFL show as TWIB did.

I remember them on HBO's Inside the NFL.

But HBO didn't arrive until late 70s?

I think I remember watching wrap-up shows prior to the standard network pregame shows on Sunday morning, probably on my CBS affiliate. I was too young for This Week in Pro Football (Summerall and Brookshier), but I probably watched NFL Game of the Week.

edit: I definitely remember watching them, but am not 100% clear if the shows were all on Sunday and which network they were on.

Thank you sir, you're likely correct that it was prior to the game. Where I was, the last game usually got over just at prime time, so no post-game shows. The only thing else I could think of was something around MNF.
