Who's had it worse for past 25 years? Cubs or Phillies fans?
Had a brief convo on FB about this. Curious about other perspectives...
I thought it would easily favor the Cubs fans having it worse for past 25 years. This individual thought he's had it worse as a Phil's fan. Thoughts? More playoff appearances for Phillies. A WS title along with another appearance. Last edited by mauchow : 06-07-2014 at 03:34 PM. |

It's not even worthy of debate, Phillies have had some magical years and even a lot of their bad years have been fun.

Your friend is crazy. The Phillies have played in more World Series in the last 7 years than the Cubs have played in 70.

If it were overall Philly versus Chicago then I would say Philly had it worse but just Phillies versus Cubs is no contest, no clue how that sorry *ss Phillies fan can play the martyr in that debate.

Actually, I believe the Trouts in MLB have had some very good years of late.

Yeah, even as a Phillies fan I have no idea how you can support that argument. Cubs have definitely had it worse.

That individual is cordially invited to go fuck himself. Pennants in 1980, 2008, 2009, championships in 1980 and 2008, and he's comparing his teams negatively to the *Cubs* in this scenario? Wow. |

I would suggest to that fan that the Bulls have had it worse than the Sixers over the past 25 years.

And this is actually my LOLme moment when I realize I somehow deleted an entire decade from history and that 1980 was 34 years ago, not 24. But the point still stands. The Cubs and the Pirates might be an actual debate, but the Cubs and the Phillies? No. |

Can add another pennant for Phillies in '93, losing in series to Jays on the Joe Carter home run. Which still falls in the 25 year range, even if Tug McGraw's team does not.

On average, by the numbers, a team should be in the World Series every 15 years and should win it every 30. Anything more than that and you're above the curve. The Phillies aren't even in the bottom half of teams for success.

The only thing good about the Cubs is that Wrigley is a great place to party.

To put it in full context, I lamented this year's team, citing the lack of fight. Mau responded with "better than being a Cubs fan". I said I had no sympathy for Cubs fans, given that the Phillies are the losingest franchise in sports history. He wished to frame it down to our own perspectives. I said I would never argue against the 07-11 Gillick era, but if you went back to 1984, when I was kind of cognizant enough to know who was what, they are about the same, save the WS title (which, again, I never argued against, nor would I). I also said the only fans I really have sympathy for are Cleveland fans (as I know Mau doesn't support all Chicago teams).
This was, naturally, taken out of context. So...deride as you wish. I just wanted to add the full scope. This is why I don't discuss sports. It always turns into crap like this. |

Oh phooey. You took it too far when you said the Cubs have as much room as the Red Sox to complain...
I didn't mean to take it too far out of context but you and your friend disagreed with my point. And, woohoo, thanks to a five game win streak the Cubs no longer hold the worst record in baseball. And 1/2 game better than the Phillies.. Last edited by mauchow : 06-07-2014 at 08:43 PM. |

So you only meant to take it out of context to a point?
The Cubs are on the upswing. The Phils...darker days ahead. F'n Amaro. The glory days are completely attributed to Pat Gillick. At least we have football season.... |

Yup. Upswing? I guess when you've been one of the worst teams in baseball for past five seasons the only way you can really go is up.. The upswing remains to be seen. F.O. definitely has a plan in place but how long will it take to be competitive again? Last summer I thought we might be able to make a push for playoffs in 2015 but I'm not so sure now. Smardzija seems adamant to leave Chicago so that would put a hindrance on competing again. Kris Bryant looks like the real deal. i hope to see him contributing next year. Javy Baez is in a bit of a slump this year in AA as a top 10 MLB prospect. Our pitching prospects seem to be another two years away for the most part. The Cubs are pitiful right now despite having two SP's pitching at an All Star level caliber... two near everyday players hitting below .180 doesn't help matters. Take out Bonafacio's incredible start and he's been closer to .200 for the rest of the year. As you said, it does seem like things are on the upswing and if we could land two players in free agency that could make an impact then we could still look to compete next year depending on what the F.O. does at the deadline this year.. "Yeah, we may have four pennants and two titles in the last 34 years, but screw the Cubs because we lost a shitload of games during the 100 years before I knew what baseball was," basically? That's the argument you brought for why the last 25 years have been worse for Phillies fans than for Cubs fans? Quote:
Let's not forget the two additional trips to the World Series in 1993 and 2009, which is precisely two more trips than the Cubs have made in the post-WWII era. Whether or not you have sympathy for Cubs' fans is one thing. Arguing that the Phillies have had it worse in the last quarter-century because they lost a shitload of games for the 100 years before your "cognizance" began doesn't really fly. |

The funny thing is...I never once argued that. All I said is I've no sympathy. Never, ever said a Phils fan has had it worse. Those are assumed words to a statement I'd never, ever make, because it isn't something I believe.

Not even a contest. It's feast or famine in Philly, but that's a far cry from what those poor Cubs fans have had to put up with.

Dola. Yeah, also this. I mean, obviously if we go beyond baseball there's a fair argument that Chicago hasn't suffered much outside of the Cubs. White Sox, Blackhawks & Bulls obviously have treated the city well. Hell even the Bears made a Super Bowl which Lovie got to ride on for far too long. But I wouldn't make Cubs v. Phils my waterloo.

I just realized that I, a Cubs fan, accidentally clicked on the "Phillies" in this poll.

Fun Fact:
The Chicago Cubs have the 6th best all time winning percentage in MLB I really thought they would be in the bottom ten.

Being a Phillies fan, I can say that while the team is terrible now, it's still better than being a Cubs fan.
I could care less about what happened to this team at the turn of the century, we won a big one recently and we had some success afterwards just not enough to win it again. I cannot wait for the Amaro reign to end, though I hope Ed Wade is not re-instated (be careful what you wish for). But in 25 years, the Sillies have had it better (in fact if you added just 9 years, you would have the 80 championship, the 83 world series loss, the 93 world series loss along with the last few years). Problem is Amaro did what happened in 93, gave extensions to player he shouldn't. Better than Cubs in the past 25, A-yup.
