Most schools around here are, but it varies I think. And some now fold it into one of those weird mid-semester-but-not-full-break-breaks so that they don't have to acknowledge why they're doing it. (kind of like fall festivals have replaced Halloween carnivals & holiday concerts have replaced Christmas concerts)

I remember in elementary school making those Valentines holders that we'd tape to our desks. Loved the holiday back then and getting all the Valentines.

Once middle school hit, that shit all changed. I hated it from then on. I usually get a small gift from my parents though, so like some others in the thread, it's not unusual at all to get things for people other than sig others.

And yes it's a stupid "holiday", all it's good for is to cause problems between couples. I'm down with discounted chocolate the day after though :P

I stopped for coffee on the way into work. The coffee shop has a giant chalkboard near the entrance, and typically has a question of the day for people to add their thoughts.

Leftover from last night was "When do you know it's love?"

All the typical answers...nervous around the other person...can't be without them...blah blah blah.

Scrawled in the corner, one answer caught my eye:

'When I let her poop while I'm in the shower'

That, my friends, is what Valentine's Day should be about!

Not sure if this was normal or not throughout the country, but kids (at least elementary age) make a deal of it.

My kid came home from day care with all sorts of stuff from the other kids in his class.
