Why do you
Ok..
This is a food question. Why do people prefer Washington Apples over say...Empire State Apples (New York State)? What makes them better? Same with trout. WHy is Colorado trout preferred? Is this the same with everything? Is their is a site for this? |

Did you ask a question on this board about trout? You should have asked which variety feels better.

Paging The Afoci...
While we're at it, what sort of peanut butter do you prefer? And where are your crawfish harvested from? I know they're typically thought of as a Louisiana bayou product, but actually, there's a huge crawdad festival here in N. Cal in the town of Isleton every year. I guess the river delta is fertile mating territory for our little river-borne cockroaches... |

Generally, these sort of things come down to a combination of a matter of taste and local/state/regional pride.
Georgia peaches, for example. Some folks swear they're better tasting than those grown elsewhere. And then there's Vidalia Onions which, IIRC, have to be grown in a specific part of Georgia otherwise you're subject to false labeling charges. (kinda like wines from various regions of France)

I like Red Delicious Apples.
I don't like seafood (or trout). JIF or Peter Pan Peanut Butter usually, but when I want to splurge, it's all about the Reeses. Crawfish: see seafood. |

it's about growing conditions. Colorado is high altitude and low oxygen and very cold water so trout will flurrish better in those waters than somewhere where the water and climate is different.
Vidalia Onions are a good example. Only a certain spot in Georgia will Vidalia's grow. has to do with the soil there. Anywhere else in the world and you won't have to same structure. You'll never taste an onion as sweet as a Vidalia. You can't grow a Vidalia anywhere but in that spot in Georgia, it might be simliar but will never have the same sweetness. Washington has a lot of rain which leads to a cooler moister climate than New York which is good for growing apples. New York has a warmer climate and no where near the rain Washington gets. Thus apples from Washington taste better due to better growing climate. Florida oranges are some of the best due to the almost tropical climate down there. etc...

I don't think rain has anything to do with Washington apples. The apple orchards in Washington are all east of the Cascades where the climate is warm and dry - in order to grow all that fruit (including peaches, pears, berries, etc) a great deal of water is diverted from the Columbia river and used to irrigate the farmland. |

some of the best apples in the world come from Lake Chelan orchard, apples flourish in moist climate and Washington St. has no such myth as dry climate

People tend to think of Washington as a very rainy state, mainly due to the impressions created from visiting Seattle. However, the eastern half of the state receives much less rain that the western half due to the Cascade mountains. It's not a desert - it does rain there - but it is a fact that the orchards there are dependent upon the irrigation provided by diverting water from the Columbia River. |
