If the early reports are true, Arkansas was ok with keeping him, but he was going to be penalized by the school. Petrino turned down the penalties and forced Arkansas to fire him.

10 bucks on Petrino being employed by another SEC team in what, less than 18 months? Lets see, UT maybe (or have they had their share of scumbags with Kiffin?)

He will take a year off then another school desperate to be relevant will drive a dump truck full of money up to his house.

Dude is a mega douchebag, but he knows how to play the game.

I think the taint of this would make it tough for him to get a job in Knoxville. He's not likable enough to overcome being a dirtbag there given their recent painful history with dirtbags.

Not saying they might not hire another dirtbag at some point (even as soon as next year) but I just don't see it being this particular dirtbag.

Arkansas needs to offer Sean Payton a one year deal.

I think what happened was MJ4H deleted his comment about his sources saying Petrino wasn't going to be fired and it knocked the thread back to the second page.

Kind of a MBBF move.

Thanks, Lathum. I knew I had seen the thread on the first page earlier today.

Evidently he hasn't signed a contract yet with Arkansas State, just accepted the offer letter.

I don't pretend to know much about UT politics so I defer to you on that one; just playing connect the dots, so to speak, and I recall hearing on this board that Dooley was in trouble. Besides, I don't exactly see Petrino's act playing in the Big 10.

Here's something to ponder that I thought of when discussing this on Facebook:

Would Petrino be fired if it wasn't for Jerry Sandusky?

I'm not Jeff Long or anyone else who had input in the decision-making process, but I have to think the precedent established by the Sandusky situation has significantly shifted thinking in college athletic departments, even though this thing is on a much smaller scale.

I'm sure MJ4H will hear (and hopefully share) some of the inner workings, but I would guess that the biggest factor was getting the mistress the 6-figure job. That's probably comparable to most 10+ year professors (outside of a handful of fields) and the academics are largely the ones that sit on the BOTs and BOGs.

I'm guessing that, if this had happened at a private school (where salaries don't need to be disclosed), we may have seen a different outcome.

Just a gut call on my part, truth is there's probably only a few people who would actually have much influence on the hiring & they aren't necessarily the most predictable people in the world for us common folk.

I don't know how it went down, but I have a lot of respect for Arkansas out of this. i'm not sure I believe Petrino turned down sanctions, simply because I can't believe he thought he had any leverage in this situation.

Eh,
he'll get hired next year by another school looking to make a splash, as opposed to always walking on a knife's edge at Arkansas; for him, why not make a clean break rather than always having this cloud hanging over (and getting fired about a 7-5 season for a morals clause thing, rather than going out on a high). I mean, couldn't you see him making the same money next year at another school?

Figures. One of the most narrow-minded apologist of any college team I've ever seen and that's saying a lot. Everyone knew Petrino (except M4JH of course) was a douchebag and glad karma bit him in the butt.

Sadly, the kind of school that needs to hire him is a Kentucky - a crappy football program that needs to "marry up" by getting a coach with some flaws and riding his coattails for 3-4 years before he fixes his reputation and heads off to a better program. But I don't know, this is the 3rd program he's left under a bad circumstances - how do you sell that hire to your school?

For a program as downtrodden as that, is there really a need to sell the hire, though? After all, Arkansas was in bad shape after the Nutt decline when they hired Petrino and he's delivered exactly what the university was hoping for - a restoration of the program to provide a strong base for the next hire, who I'm sure will be thoroughly checked out.

Who's the last guy to exist 3 consecutive jobs under these kinds of circumstances? Neuheisal had 2 bad departures, but it took him a while to get back into it. I'm struggling to think of someone who's on his 4th job after 3 bad departures.

Rick got a chance at his alma mater too at that point and came pretty cheaply.

I don't know. He now has enough of a track record of being an egotistical ass that I don't think a major university would take a chance on him. Unless it's a down and out school looking to regain past glory (UT like many have said) I see him ending up and some middle tier school that wants a big name, doesn't care about his past, and just wants to make a name of its program. Think how far Leach fell. I can see Petrino doing the same.

That's pretty funny but the dude's gone now MJ4H, turn on his ass and be happy the school is going to necessarily hire a better person to run your program.

I've been out of the news loop since last week, so maybe some info has come out. But if not, it seems awfully low-key if this is really happening today and isn't going to be an interim guy:

Barrett Sallee@BarrettSallee
Arkansas RT @SportsTalkwBo: told new coach to be announced this afternoon. Won't be anybody on current staff. Not expecting word "interim"

There is almost no comparison between Petrino and Leach.

Maybe I'm naive, but I have a hard time seeing any big-time program rolling the dice on Petrino. I think he's going to be stuck looking for a down-on-their-luck small conference program willing to absorb the PR hit in order to get a few seasons of winning and bowls, and even then, it's going to take a while.

Look for Bud Foster, VT DC, to be named Arkansas head coach this afternoon.

BAH, never mind, it looks like the VT presser is to can Seth Greenberg.

Finebaum is reporting that he's coming in as interim head coach.

That makes sense. John L Smith as a long term hire didn't make any at all.

How do you leave your alma mater (I-AA and all) without coaching a game to be INTERIM coach at Arkansas?

I honestly don't know what's worse ... the hire or that Smith took the job. It's a toss-up.

Just did some wiki research to make sure this was the same guy as the former Michigan State coach (it was) and I found this:

Quote:
After the 2002 season, Smith was hired as the head coach at Michigan State, which created controversy because Smith was hired before Louisville's bowl game that season, and he did not inform his Louisville players of the decision until halftime of the bowl game, which they lost to Marshall.

Why would a coach tell his team that he's leaving during a halftime speech? And Marc, can you please code it so that I can do this in Football Manager?

Let's not get too carried away here. Weber State is FCS and no way they'd have ever gotten a coach like this if he wasn't old and an alum. And even then...it's just for a year. He was just going to Weber to be a retiree figurehead anyway, he can do that at Arky for a lot more money.

Except the money probably won't be that good at Arkansas and he'll be gone a year from now when the overly exuberant Hogs fan base roast him for not winning the national title. And now he can't go back home to Weber State, which is probably the only school in country who would hire him.

I'm sure in his mind he goes to Arkansas, makes it a permanent gig and rides off into the sunset. Someone needs to slap some sense into him. Oh, wait ...

He'll probably make at Arkansas in 1 year what he would have made in 6-7 at Weber State.

I don't think the hire is a good one by any means, but I don't think John L Smith is doing anything particularly wrong by accepting a job in SEC.
