Need Popup Help!!!
No i am not talking about Viagra, thanks anyways.
I have 1 of my 3 computers that i cant seem to get rid of the automatic popups or the ones when i am surfing the net. I have spybot and every time that i scan there is more shit to get rid of. When i leave the computer for an extended time i return to 5 or 6 popups even though i am not online. When i am surfing everytime i go to a new website i get 4 or 5 new popups. When i try the same thing on my 2 other computers i get an occasional popup but i can live with that. I have tried to use the google toolbar but that doesnt stop 1/10th of the popups. Any help with a suggestion or a program i can purchase would be appreciated. The computer i am having problems on is my computer that i use for work so this is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance. |

dola,
You MAY want to scan for Adware. It's possible that there's something on your computer that's bringing up the popups. Also, try a Firewall. Zone Alarm is a free one that's pretty good. |

from doing some work on a friend's laptop (her son seemed to have downloaded just about every adware infested software he could find), I can say that some of the spwyare can be very, very hard to get rid of. I know one file, no matter how often it would get deleted, would get replicated the next time the computer booted - can't remember how it was doing it, or how I got around it. I'm pretty sure some work in the Registry was involved. Try ad-aware - it might help to have a different program try. A firewall might help, but it may not stop the popup, just the content. Google toolbar is nice, but that's probably not the answer for this either. Really, if nothing else works, you may end up just having to reformat and reinstall windows.

By automatic popups I assume you mean the messenger service in Win 2000/XP. You can shut down the messenger service in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services>Messenger
For regular web popups, I haven't seen a popup since I started using Firebird for my browser. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ |
