FOF 4.0c Houston Texans, 2017 and beyond

I fast-simmed 12 seasons, and then took over Houston three years ago. I've decided that for the sake of getting to know my players better, I'm going to post a dynasty thread.

HOUSE RULES (off the top of my head)
1. Only AI-initiated trades, except that I can trade picks during the draft.
2. Renegotiations allowed only in last year of contract, during the playoffs. (In other words, they can be used to keep guys around, but not to free up cap room to make other moves.)
3. At least 53 players must be carried into training camp.
4. After training camp, I can only sign only undrafted rookies from the FA pool.
5. All offers to FA's who would be new to my team must be made in Week 1 of the 20-step process. They can be adjusted UPWARD, but not downward. (No waiting around for price drops from new guys in other words.)

There may be others that I remember along the way...

I went after a different coach, but failed to land him. I’m quite pleased with Mummert as my scout though.

INITIAL ROSTER REPORT

Code:
Player # Pos Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct OnTeam Farley, Hunter 12 QB 7 51 51 5 yrs. 2011 Johnstone, Leslie 17 QB 2 33 52 2 yrs. 2016 Brook, Harold 2 QB 4 25 64 2 yrs. 2014

If anyone reading has followed any of my dynasties before, you know I believe in a “run-first” offense with a QB who doesn’t make many mistakes. Farley has fit the bill for me nicely, turning in 92.0 and 96.6 QB ratings the last two years. He has a 100 rating in avoiding INT’s, and a 92 in two-minute offense. In other words, he won’t make a lot of mistakes, and can pull it out at the end if necessary. Brook has looked decent in limited play, and has green ratings in the 50’s-80’s up and down the board.
Code:
Fulton, Grant 28 RB 4 58 63 1 yr. 2014 Ackerman, Earl 40 RB 2 32 38 --- 2016 Jahr, William 27 RB 2 30 36 2 yrs. 2016 Hansen, Earl 48 RB 2 27 35 --- 2016 Horn, Corwin 20 FB 3 94 94 2 yrs. 2015 Hutton, Kenny 24 FB 2 15 29 --- 2016
Fulton has been the starting RB the last two seasons, and rushed for over 2,800 yards over that time period with 4.7 ypc. In the top 6 categories (the ones that have to do with running theball), the is stellar, with his LOWEST rating being 70/73 in hole recognition. He’s nothing special out of the backfield as a receiver, and he has a tendency to fumble a bit too much (25/37). At FB, Corwin Horn is one of the best around. He was the 1st-Team fullback last year, with 245 yards rushing, 4.8 ypc, 57 catches, and a 47.2 key run block pct. Horn can do it all as a FB.
Code:
Wiegert, Russell 88 TE 6 39 39 2 yrs. 2016 Castillo, Howie 80 TE 2 24 37 --- 2016 Turner, Johnnie 81 TE 2 14 32 --- 2016 Dimcheff, Randy 85 FL 9 45 46 1 yr. 2009 Hopkins, Jeff 83 FL 2 41 60 5 yrs. 2016 Sutton, Rex 89 FL 2 20 25 --- 2016 Rushing, Luther 82 SE 10 58 59 2 yrs. 2014 Check, Roderick 23 SE 3 16 23 1 yr. 2015 Pacheco, Phil 87 SE 2 16 26 --- 2016 McKenna, Joe 86 SE 2 13 21 --- 2016
TE Weigert has quite low ratings in all but the two categories I consider most important for TE’s, run blocking (83) and route running (89/94). His other ratings are in the teens and 20’s mainly, but he caught 43 passes last year and had a 44.4 KRBpct. I can live with that. Dimcheff, Hopkins and Rushing should continue to do a serviceable job as the top three receivers. Hopkins was a first-round pick last year, and looks to have star potential, but he only caught 14 passes last year, and was mainly used as the 3rd WR.
Code:
Burgo, Troy 75 LT 6 57 57 1 yr. 2012 Baump, Bryce 78 LT 8 48 48 --- 2016 Ellard, Amos 67 LT 2 6 27 --- 2016 Jackman, Willie 63 LG 14 45 45 1 yr. 2014 Hoffer, Irving 60 LG 2 23 36 1 yr. 2016 Terrell, Malcolm 55 C 13 57 57 2 yrs. 2014 Fisher, Dale 59 C 2 12 32 --- 2016 Melton, Wesley 62 RG 10 54 54 1 yr. 2014 Degley, Alex 69 RG 2 23 33 --- 2016 Fuqua, Doug 76 RT 7 60 62 2 yrs. 2011 Johansson, Jessie 64 RT 2 12 28 --- 2016
LT Burgo, a former first-round pick, had all of his ratings near maxed out before an injury last season. He still looks like he should be quite good. Fuqua had a breakout year last season. He gave up 23 sacks over 2 years in 2014 and 2015, but last year he only allowed 5. The aging guards still look pretty solid. Melton is a superior run blocker (90). C Terrell rounds out this veteran unit.
Code:
Falvey, Charles 8 P 7 52 55 2 yrs. 2011 Locke, Stephen 4 K 12 80 80 --- 2014
Falve gets great hang time on his punts (85/93), but is nothing special as far as distance goes. Locke is very good all-around, and I’d like to re-sign him.
Code:
Nedney, Morris 74 LDE 11 45 48 --- 2014 Lyons, Myron 52 LDE 4 37 40 --- 2014 Chapman, Daniel 73 LDT 7 53 56 2 yrs. 2016 Crutcher, Wesley 98 LDT 2 17 34 --- 2016 Jeffries, T.J. 70 LDT 2 16 40 2 yrs. 2016 Tolwinski, Albert 72 RDT 3 34 39 1 yr. 2015 Carlisle, Jose 99 RDT 2 20 31 --- 2016 Ricksecker, Alfred 97 RDE 2 19 27 --- 2016
The DL will likely get re-shaped due to free agency. Nedney, the leader, is a stellar run defender with little pass-rushing skill (only 2.5 sacks in 16 starts). DT Chapman is very similar to Nedney, and they have a Conflict. Towlinski had a pretty good year as the starting RDT last year, with 47 tackles. My starting RDE retired.
Code:
Turner, Rex 93 SLB 5 79 79 2 yrs. 2013 Siglar, Clarence 58 SLB 2 18 33 --- 2016 Lofton, Rickey 92 MLB 8 76 76 3 yrs. 2010 Sutter, Irving 53 MLB 2 19 38 --- 2016 Wilkins, Les 95 WLB 2 28 45 3 yrs. 2016 Hastings, Lonnie 96 WLB 10 22 22 2 yrs. 2013
The LB’s have been the strength of this defense, but WLB Hastings suffered a SEVERE ratings hit in the offseason. He’s likely getting cut. Lofton and Turner remain among the best in the business though. Turner was a first-team all pro last year, with 94 tackles and 14.5 sacks.
Code:
Aghemo, Richie 26 LCB 6 72 72 4 yrs. 2012 McCulley, Colin 25 LCB 3 26 36 1 yr. 2015 Cunningham, Spencer 43 RCB 7 54 54 2 yrs. 2016 Boggs, J.C. 47 RCB 2 16 36 --- 2016 Ripley, T.J. 35 RCB 2 16 26 --- 2016 Alston, Jose 36 SS 6 50 57 2 yrs. 2016 Gunn, Marlon 30 SS 2 21 28 1 yr. 2016 Lombard, Tim 42 FS 8 64 67 1 yr. 2014 Woodley, Irving 44 FS 2 19 36 --- 2016
My returnees in the secondary are all very solid at M2M defense, which is par for the course in the way I do business.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I’m happy with my roster, as this team has advanced to the AFC Championship the last two seasons. The only gaping holes are my DE’s. I have none under contract.

2017 20-STEP PROCESS

STARTERS/KEY PLAYERS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE AGENCY
DE Morris Nedney—He’s been nothing spectacular. I may look elsewhere.

Franchise Player:: None.

Amount Available For New Players: $8.52M (salary cap is $158.9M, so that ain’t much!)

Cuts To Save Cap Room
WLB Lonnie Hastings—His ratings dropped severely, and his backup could start in a pinch. This move saves $6.83M in cap costs.

After these cuts, I still don’t have a lot of money to play with. I’m going to need around $8.5M to sign rookies to fill the roster, so I really only have around $7M to spend on two starting DE’s, and I really wanted a better WLB as well.

Thoughts After Examining FA and Draft Pools
I’m severely limited by $$$ right now.

New UFA’s Signed During 20-Step Process
RDE Billy Gable—He’s a 6th-year man. He’s good at run defense (78), but not much elsewhere. He has been a part-time starter most of his career to date.
LDE Hugh Boothe—A fifth-year man, he’s best at run defense (64/86), but a little more balanced than Gable. He started for the last three seasons in Dallas, getting a total of 70 tackls and 10.5 sacks over those three seasons.
WLB Harvey Jenkins—Gives me another option over there. Nothing special. One-year deal. He’s 22/43 in run defense, 26/50 in pass rush technique, 68 in pass rush strength. He’s never been a starter, and has no sacks in his short career. He’s a fifth-year man, btu he’s only been on the field for 188 run plays and 152 pass plays.

My Own RFA’s and UFA’s Re-signed
None.

FA Analysis
Well, I filled those slots, but the players are mediocre at best.

2017 AMATEUR DRAFT

PRE-DRAFT THOUGHTS
I’d certainly love some guys with potential at DE and OLB, and I also have an aging offensive line.

THE DRAFT
1(30): DE Darnell Graham (17/52/4.2)—According to my scout, he has a very large upside. He’s rated 9/70 in run defense, and 8/65 in pass rush technique. I’ll try to get him some playing time early on.
2(30): G Lawrence Welch(19/56,4.7)—Both of my starting guards are in the last year of their contracts, and both are getting old. Welch is rated 12/60,12/60,42,32/61.
3(30): C T.J. Duffy (27/55/4.8)—Duffy is a potential starter at another position with an aging starter. His ratings are 16/60,9/34,80,56/75
4(30): K J.C. Smith (34/74/6.5)—He’s got good ratings all-around, and will be our kicker this year.
5(30): DT Wally Portilla (15/43/3.6)—My scout likes this guy: 4/55, 5/54, 22, 1/27,78,6/13.
6(30): RB Mo Singleton (26/32/3.3)—Red ratings in the 30’s in all running categories. Insurance policy.
7(30): CB Mitch Moore (23/40/3.5)—17/38 in M2M, 38/41 in bump and run, 40/92 in int’s. could be useful.

After the draft, I have 40 players under contract. I re-sign one UFA, TE Howie Castillo, and fill the rest of the roster with undrafted rookies.

2017 FIRST HALF DIARY

WEEK ONE: Houston (0-0) at Jacksonville (0-0) (-9)
We win ugly with a bend-don’t-break defensive effort, despite gettings outgained 364-320. Farley hits 2nd-year receiver Hopkins for a big 75-yard TD in the 2nd quarter, and the defense shuts ‘em out in the 2nd half as we win 20-10. However, we suffer a BIG loss in this one as RB Grant Fulton goes down for the year due to elbow ligament surgery. Farley is 21 for 33 for 221 yards with 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s.

WEEK TWO: Houston (1-0) (-2) at Seattle (1-0)
I start star FB Horn at RB in this one, and use backup TE Castillo, who is a pretty good run blocker, as the fullback. Horn carries 23 times for 92 yards and a TD, and Farley is 18 for 28 for 223 yards with 0 INT’s as we win 20-15.

WEEK THREE: Houston (2-0) (-3) at New Jersey (2-0)
We aren’t blowing anyone out, but a win is a win. This time Farley hits Hopkins for a 15-yard TD with 1:05 to play to give us a 27-24 win. It was the 2nd Farley-to-Hopkins TD of the day. Another big injury occurs though. SE Luther Rushing tears his quad and is done for the year.

WEEK FOUR: Houston (3-0) (-9) at Pittsburgh (0-3)
The pattern continues. We win 20-17 over the Steelers. This time it is uglier than ever, as we throw 2 INT’s and lose one fumble as well. Still, we held on to the ball for 38:01, and come away with the “W.”

WEEK FIVE: Bye

WEEK SIX: Cleveland (3-2) at Houston (4-0) (-9)
Our luck runs out as Farley gets sacked 8 times on the day. We lose 20-13. Star OLB Rex Turner severely sprains his wrist and will be out for three weeks or so.

WEEK SEVEN: Tennessee (3-2) at Houston (4-1) (-4)
The offense really bogs down in this one. Farley was a dismal 14 for 33 for 149 yards. Horn had 13 carries for 55 yards. We’re 3 for 12 on third down and fall 20-13.

WEEK EIGHT: Cincinnati (3-4) at Houston (4-2) (-6)
I give 6th-round draft choice RB Singleton the start in this one, and move Horn back to FB. We play to a 20-20 tie, and the offense, which is of course is without one of our best receivers and our feature back, got back untracked, piling up an amazing 560 total yards. Singleton carries 27 times for 120 yards, and Farley is 36 for 45 with 2 TD’s and 1 INT.

WEEK NINE: Houston (4-2-1) at Baltimore (5-3) (-3)
Ugh. We get blown out. Singleton carries 21 times for 56 yards, and Farley is 11 for 25 with 2 INT’s. Nothing went right in this one and we fall 41-6.

2008 SECOND HALF DIARY

WEEK TEN: Houston (4-3-1) at Indianapolis (4-4) (-1)
We’re continuing to look vulnerable, this time in a 27-17 loss. Singleton has only 58 yards on 17 carries. I’m going to a predominantly short passing offense next week.

WEEK ELEVEN: Jax (1-8) at Houston (4-4-1) (-9)
Ugh. We barely squeak by at home against the lowly Jaguars. We win 17-16. Dimcheff has 9 catchers for 176 yards and a TD to lead the way offensively. QB Farley hyperextends his knee midway through this one, and Brook comes in and does well, going 13 for 21 with 1 TD and 0 INT’s. Farley should be back in a couple of weeks. More troubling, though, is that OLB Rex Turner strains an elbow tendon and is Out, and won’t be full strength for 6 weeks. I could REALLY use him down the stretch.

WEEK TWELVE: SF (7-3) (-7) at Houston (5-4-1)
We are having a very difficult time generating any offense! Our only two “drives” for scores happened when we started in their territory. We lose 21-10.

WEEK THIRTEEN: Oakland (8-3) (-3) at Houston (5-5-1)
Dr. Jeckyll, meet Mr. Hyde! The offense is utterly dominant under backup QB Harold Brook against the playoff-bound Raiders. We amass 484 total yards as we roll to a 41-13 win. Singleton rushes for 100 yards, and Brook passes for 332. Starting LT Burgo gets a stress fracture and is done for the year though.

WEEK FOURTEEN: St. Louis (4-8) at Houston (6-5-1) (-5)
I bring QB Farley back, and OLB Turner upgrades to probable and returns as well to make seven tackles. Farley is 21 for 37 for 276 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, and we win 21-18. A few fans are heard clamoring for Harold Brook to become the starter.

WEEK FIFTEEN: Houston (7-5-1) at Tennessee (7-6) (-2)
We’re fighting for the playoffs, and Farley is fighting to remain the starter. Both aspirations take a hit this week as we fall 21-17. Farley is 27 for 38 for 263 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT’s. We still have a decent shot at the playoffs, as we’re ½ game behind Tennessee and SD, who both would be in right now.

WEEK SIXTEEN: Houston (7-6-1) at Arizona (7-7) (-1)
This one takes on a playoff atmosphere as both teams are fighting to make the postseason. Harold Brook gets the start at QB, and he doesn’t exactly make his case for starting. He is 13 for 26 for 106 yards with 0 TD’s and 1 INT. Despite his performance, the defense comes up big with an 87-yard interception return for a TD by WLB Jenkins, as well as two other turnovers, and JC Smith hits 4 FG’s, including one from 54 and one from 56. We win 22-16 and keep our playoff hopes alive. In a big blow, FB Horn breaks ribs and is Out, and probably won’t return this year.

WEEK SEVENTEEN: Indianapolis (10-5) (-2) at Houston (8-6-1)
Farley starts at QB once again. He has a decent day, but the running game is now REALLY horrid with Horn. We fall 20-17 and miss the playoffs.

FS Tim Lombard gets 2 additional years.
Injured T Troy Burgo is ready to take a pay cut that is probably big enough to justify keeping him around even if it is only as a backup. I give him two more years.
Backup S Gunn gets 1 more year.
G Melton gets two more years.
WR Dimcheff had a very good season, and he gets a fairly big contract for the next two years.

2018 INITIAL ROSTER REPORT

Code:
Player # Pos Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct OnTeam Farley, Hunter 12 QB 8 48 48 4 yrs. 2011 Johnstone, Leslie 17 QB 3 35 48 1 yr. 2016 Brook, Harold 2 QB 5 32 65 1 yr. 2014
Farley still appears to be a fine option as long as the running game is doing well, but I don’t seem him as the focal point of a pass-first offense. Brook, a former undrafted free agent, continues to develop.
Code:
Fulton, Grant 28 RB 5 59 62 --- 2014 Jahr, William 27 RB 3 30 30 1 yr. 2016 Berk, Jerald 21 RB 2 27 37 --- 2017 Singleton, Mo 49 RB 2 25 28 1 yr. 2017 Farmer, Ben 39 RB 2 18 26 --- 2017 Horn, Corwin 20 FB 4 91 91 1 yr. 2015 Miller, D.J. 45 FB 2 20 27 --- 2017 Stewart, Freddie 47 FB 2 14 30 --- 2017
Fulton suffers no noticeable drop in ratings from his injury. He gets the franchise tag. Horn still should be a stud.
Code:
Wiegert, Russell 88 TE 7 39 39 1 yr. 2016 Castillo, Howie 80 TE 3 29 37 --- 2016 Boone, Roger 84 TE 2 19 33 --- 2017 Hopkins, Jeff 83 FL 3 51 60 4 yrs. 2016 Dimcheff, Randy 85 FL 10 46 47 2 yrs. 2009 Shea, Matt 3 FL 2 17 31 1 yr. 2017 Buckingham, K.C. 14 FL 2 17 25 1 yr. 2017 Rushing, Luther 82 SE 11 36 37 1 yr. 2014 Check, Roderick 23 SE 4 18 22 --- 2015 Koss, Brian 89 SE 2 10 22 --- 2017
SE Rushing suffered a significant ratings drop after his injury. He’ll likely get cut, as he’s costing $12.15M in cap $$$. Dimcheff and Hopkins each had over 1,000 yards receiving last year. I’ll move Hopkins to SE and try to draft a youngster. At TE, Wiegert caught 50 passes and only dropped 2.
Code:
Burgo, Troy 75 LT 7 56 56 2 yrs. 2012 Jackman, Willie 63 LG 15 40 40 --- 2014 Hoffer, Irving 60 LG 3 11 17 --- 2016 Terrell, Malcolm 55 C 14 58 58 1 yr. 2014 Duffy, T.J. 54 C 2 34 62 3 yrs. 2017 Melton, Wesley 62 RG 11 54 54 2 yrs. 2014 Welch, Lawrence 61 RG 2 20 42 2 yrs. 2017 Fuqua, Doug 76 RT 8 61 62 1 yr. 2011 Dixon, Marlon 77 RT 2 21 34 --- 2017 Delgado, Ken 68 RT 2 9 35 --- 2017
I feel fortunate that T Burgo didn’t suffer a big ratings drop off of his injury, plus he’s signed for a low price. It is time to replace G Jackman. He was only 10 for 63 in KRB last year, and gave up 10 sacks. Last year’s 2nd-round draft choice, Welch, does NOT look like the solution unfortunately, as his ratings have dropped to 14/42,15/42,42,29/45.
Code:
Falvey, Charles 8 P 8 52 55 1 yr. 2011 Smith, J.C. 6 K 2 45 74 2 yrs. 2017
No real complaints here.
Code:
Boothe, Hugh 71 LDE 6 39 43 1 yr. 2017 Weber, Seth 94 LDE 2 24 31 1 yr. 2017 Chapman, Daniel 73 LDT 8 57 57 1 yr. 2016 Jeffries, T.J. 70 LDT 3 18 36 1 yr. 2016 Tolwinski, Albert 72 RDT 4 39 39 --- 2015 Portilla, Wally 90 RDT 2 15 40 2 yrs. 2017 Gable, Billy 96 RDE 7 35 35 1 yr. 2017 Graham, Darnell 91 RDE 2 20 45 4 yrs. 2017
I’d like to improve this mediocre unit. The starters are decent run stoppers, but I got very little pass rushing from the DL last year. If there are any studs available via free agency, I’d like to sign at least one.
Code:
Turner, Rex 93 SLB 6 79 79 1 yr. 2013 Banks, Otis 50 SLB 2 12 28 --- 2017 Lofton, Rickey 92 MLB 9 76 76 2 yrs. 2010 Gillum, Brian 51 WILB 2 19 31 1 yr. 2017 Jenkins, Harvey 57 WLB 7 34 42 --- 2017 Wilkins, Les 95 WLB 3 29 41 2 yrs. 2016
Turner and Lofton are star-caliber LB’s, and Jenkins performed pretty solidly at WLB. No big worries here, other than trying to re-sign Jenkins.
Code:
Aghemo, Richie 26 LCB 7 73 73 3 yrs. 2012 McCulley, Colin 25 LCB 4 33 37 --- 2015 Cunningham, Spencer 43 RCB 8 54 54 1 yr. 2016 Moore, Mitch 31 RCB 2 31 49 2 yrs. 2017 Clinton, Lionel 34 RCB 2 12 38 1 yr. 2017 Alston, Jose 36 SS 7 57 57 1 yr. 2016 Gunn, Marlon 30 SS 3 22 28 1 yr. 2016 Lombard, Tim 42 FS 9 64 67 2 yrs. 2014 Sutter, Omar 46 FS 2 16 29 --- 2017
All four starters are back, and I have no complaints.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I’d like to improve on both sides of the ball at the line of scrimmage. It looks like I’ll have a little money to play with this year after a cut or two.

2018 20-STEP PROCESS

STARTERS/KEY PLAYERS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE AGENCY
RB Fulton—franchisee
LG Jackman—He had a bad year and is getting old. Buh-bye.
RDT Tolwinski—I want to improve on the DL, and he’s mediocre.
WLB Jenkins—I’d probably prefer to re-sign him if he’s cheap.

Franchise Player:: RB Fulton gets a four-year deal worth $42.75M.
Salary Cap: $163.1M
Amount Available For New Players: $3.42M

Cuts To Save Cap Room
QB Johnstone--#3 QB and costing over $1M in cap room.
RB Jahr—also over $1M for a little-used backup
FL Buckingham—I can get a better rookie.
SE Rushing—Saves me $9.75M in cap room.

After these cuts, I have some money to play with. I’m going to need around $6M to sign rookies to fill the roster, so I have about $10M to spend at G, DT and WLB

Thoughts After Examining FA and Draft Pools
The talent that I need appears to be available. Here’s hoping I can sign it.

New UFA’s Signed During 20-Step Process
DT Riddick Trapp—He’s got pretty solid ratings across the board. Decent at both run defense and rushing the passer. Lowest ratings is 29/36 in pass rush technique. Highest is 44/55 in run defense.
G Roosevelt Humphrey—He is a 5th-year guy who has started since his rookie year in Pittsburgh. He’s rated 41,61/75,24,55/58, and should make a solid left guard for me.

My Own RFA’s and UFA’s Re-signed
OLB Harvey Jenkins.

FA Analysis
Well, I filled the slots, and I feel like I’ll be better than last year.

2018 AMATEUR DRAFT

PRE-DRAFT THOUGHTS
I can use some guys with potential on the DL, and a 3rd wide receiver.

THE DRAFT
1(17): DT Charles Darchi (40/54/5.1)—This kid is very good at play diagnosis (37/82) and punishing runners (69). He’s got a 73 in pass rush strength as well. I like the fact that he has lots of red from the get-go.
2(17): SE Cornell Sutton(25/47,4.0)—He could be the 3rd WR I’m looking for. He’s rated 33/80 in route running, and all his other red ratings are 20 and above, with greens mostly in the 40’s-60’s.
3(17): DE Matthew Hatcher (23/41/3.6)—Appears to have some potential. 9/42, 9/33, 48, 20/51, 32, 43/56 ratings.
4(17): DE Buddy Hollingsworth (24/41/3.5)—Could become a pass-rushing specialist extrodinaire (11/68 technique, 70 strength).
5(17): RB Edgar Summers (28/38/3.5)—He is rated 62/74 in hole recognition. Gotta like that.
6(17): TE Jerald Zimmerman (15/47/3.9)—He has some upside, rated 7/66 in run blocking and 8/72 in route running.
7(17): DT Jorge Poole (20/30/2.7)—He’s 10/50 in pass rush technique, and 56 in pass rush strength. Potential pass-rushing replacement at DT.

After the draft, I have 45 players under contract. I re-sign one UFA, TE Howie Castillo, and fill the rest of the roster with undrafted rookies.

2018 PRESEASON RECAP

RECORD
4-0

ROOKIE(S) IN THE SPOTLIGHT/POSITIONS UP FOR GRAB
At WLB, I let Jenkins and Wilkins get two starts each to determine the starter. Jenkins won the starting job.

INJURY REPORT
Quote:
Injury Report:

Randy Dimcheff, FL - High Ankle Sprain, Out, full strength in about 18 weeks.

Troy Burgo, LT - Bruised Heel, Probable, full strength in about 1 week.
Grrrrrr. Another key receiver is going to miss the better part of the season. Dimcheff’s injury happened in the very final preseason game too.

CUTS
QB Dixon
RB Summers
T Boyd
OLB Dodge
S Fontenot
CB Williams
DT Poole

OUTLOOK
We have a good team, but we MUST keep RB Fulton healthy to be a championship team.

2018 FIRST HALF DIARY

WEEK ONE: Tennessee (0-0) at Houston (0-0) (-3)
We moved the ball pretty decently on the day, but couldn’t punch it in, and missed two field goals, and lose in overtime 9-6. Fulton carries 33 times for 147 yards, and Farley goes 21 for 34 for 186 yards. 2 fumbles lost hurt us as well.

WEEK TWO: Houston (0-1) (-2) at Washington (1-0)
We another one late, this time 17-14. Fulton carries 23 times for 132 yards and a TD, but Farley struggles: 16 for 31 for 180 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

WEEK THREE: Houston (0-2) (-1) at Cincinnati (1-1)
Farley has a strained hamstring and hasn’t been too impressive to start the season (71.6 rating), so I give the start to Brook. New QB, better stats, but same results. This time we fall 13-10 in overtime. Fulton continues to run well: 29 carries for 159 yards. Brook is 28 for 50 for 283 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. What’s worse is that OLB Turner strains an elbow tendon and is Out (7wks).

WEEK FOUR: Houston (0-3) at Indianapolis (3-0) (-5)
We break the drought with a 21-17 win on the road! Fulton, the NFL leader in rushing, carries 18 times for 135 yards and a TD, and Brook has a decent day: 17 for 28 for 171 yds. 0 TD’s and 1 INT.

WEEK FIVE: New Jersey (4-0) at Houston (1-3) (-1)
How often do you see a 4-0 team an underdog to a 1-3??? However, the oddsmakers prove to be spot-on, as we win 21-20 on a Brook-to-Hopkins TD pass with 34 seconds left in the game. The Jets are the first team this year to shut down Fulton, holding him to 43 yards on 19 carries, but Brooks is 21 for 30 for 270 yards with 2 TD’s (and 2 INT’s).

WEEK SIX: Houston (2-3) (-9) at Buffalo (2-3)
Looks like we may be getting rolling finally. We open up a can in a 34-10 win. The defense comes up with 5 sacks and 2 turnovers on the day.

WEEK SEVEN: Houston (3-3) (-8) at New England (1-4)
The winning streak goes to four games with a 24-21 overtime win. Brooks is 29 for 42 for 298 yards with a TD and 0 INT’s, and Fulton carries 32 times for 145 yards and 2 TD’s.

WEEK EIGHT: Houston (4-3) at Tennessee (6-1) (-2)
We lose a heartbreak to the Titans, 26-20 in overtime, despites Fulton’s 111 yards rushing and Brook’s 344 yards passing.

2018 SECOND HALF DIARY

WEEK NINE: Bye

WEEK TEN: Miami (3-5) at Houston (4-4) (-9)
OLB Turner ruptures an abductor muscle and is done for the year, but we roll 37-28 as Fulton carries for 169 yards and 2 TD’s while Brook is a very precise 18 for 24 for 229 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT’s. TE Wiegert is also lost for the year, with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

WEEK ELEVEN: Houston (5-4) (-5)at Jax (2-7)
We get blown out 30-13 on the road. Ugh. Nothing really goes well in this one. CB Cunningham dislocates his elbow and is Out (9 wks.)

WEEK TWELVE: New York (6-4) at Houston (5-5) (-2)
We begin (hopefully) a push toward the playoffs with a 45-18 whuppin’ of the Giants. Aghemo runs two passes back for TD’s

WEEK THIRTEEN: KC (4-7) at Houston (6-5) (-7)
We jump out to a 21-0 halftime lead, and coast to a 31-13 victory despite Brook throwing 4 INT’s. At 7-5, if the season ended today we’d be in the playoffs.

WEEK FOURTEEN: Houston (7-5) at Philly (8-3-1) (-3)
We lose a tough one on the road this week by a 34-29 count. Fulton continues to romp through defenses. Today he had 107 yards on 18 carries with a TD. FL Dimcheff is upgraded to probable with his high ankle sprain, and will return next week for the stretch drive

WEEK FIFTEEN: Indianapolis (9-4) (-2) at Houston (7-6)
In need of a win over a tough opponent to keep our playoff hopes alive, the offense EXPLODES with Dimcheff back for 587 total yards in a 52-28 win! Dimcheff leads the way receiving-wise, with 8 catches for 126 yards and 3 TD’s. On the day, Brook is 27 for 36 for 454 yards with SEVEN TD’s (a new NFL record!!!) and 1 INT. Fulton chips in 112 yards rushing as well. If we can win out, we make the playoffs.

WEEK SIXTEEN: Dallas (4-9-1) at Houston (8-6) (-9)
With all the offensive guns back and Brook settled in as the starting QB, this looks like a dangerous team heading into the playoffs. We win 48-13 as Brook throws 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s.

WEEK SEVENTEEN: Jacksonville (5-10) at Houston (9-6) (-7)
We close out the regular season with our third consecutive offensive explosion. Fulton carries 18 times for 110 yards with 2 TD’s, and Brook as 23 for 28 for 308 yards with 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s, and we win 45-24. One negative: Dimcheff re-injures his ankle and is listed as Out again.

Brook finally passes Farley in my scout’s eyes. He was an undrafted free agent, who has continued to rise in potential.

Fulton and Horn are as good as anyone in the business, and signed to long-term deals.

Wiegert caught 32 passes in half a season’s work at TE, and for the small number of games that Dimcheff, Sutton and Hopkins were all in the lineup, this offense looked unstoppable. I’d like to sign one more good receiver if I can.

Booth didn’t show me much at LDE, and the other options don’t impress me much. I’d like to get a starter-caliber FA there. LDT Chapman was my best all-around defensive lineman last year. I may franchise him. At RDE, former first-rounder Graham is going to be given a shot this year I reckon.

Mitch Moore looks ready to step in and start for Cunningham, and I’m guessing I’ll need that to happen for financial reasons.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Several key pieces are up for free agency.

2019 20-STEP PROCESS

STARTERS/KEY PLAYERS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE AGENCY
TE Wiegert—He’s gonna be cheap. I’d like to keep him.
C Terrell—in 15th year, and 3rd-year man Duffy looks ready. Buh-bye.
RT Fuqua—I need him back.
DT Chapman—Ditto Fuqua.
DE Booth—I’d rather look elsewhere.
DE Gable—I’d hate to have to bring in TWO new DE’s, but may be forced to do so by $$$.
SLB Turner—franchise tag
CB Cunningham—youngster waiting in the wings

Franchise Player:: OLB Turner gets just the one-year deal for $8.76M
Salary Cap: $167.1M
Amount Available For New Players: $17.08M

Cuts To Save Cap Room
G Welch—2nd-round pick from two years ago hasn’t amounted to anything.

After this cut, and looking at what I’ll need to fill the roster with rookies, I budget $15.5M to sign FA’s, as follows:

TE: $2M
RT: $0 (There are 4 tackles in the draft pool that I’d be willing to start.)
DT: $7M
DE: $6.5M

New UFA’s Signed During 20-Step Process
DE Brandon Harmon (4.4)—This 10th-year man has been a solid starter for a few years. He’s rated 36 in run defense, and 51 each in pass rush tech. and str. He gets a 3-yr deal.
DT Dave Jean (4.8)—I couldn’t find one DT who fit what I was looking for, but I did find two cheap ones. Jean is the pass rusher (84 tech, 66 strength).
DT Phil Lucas (4.1)—Lucas is the run-stopper (65/71). Both of the DT’s are signed to 2-year deals costing less than $2.5M in cap room this year.
WR Korey Streb (3.8)—Had a little money left over after the offers to the guys above, and thought I’d go after an insurance policy at WR. He’s rated 59 in 3rd down and big plays.

My Own RFA’s and UFA’s Re-signed
None.

FA Analysis
I think the DL will be better. I’m worried about starting two youngsters on the offensive line though.

2019 AMATEUR DRAFT

PRE-DRAFT THOUGHTS
I need a starting RT. After that, all four LB’s are in the final year of their contracts, so I could use some help there if it is available.

THE DRAFT
Four tackles go in the first 16 picks, so I trade up from #23 to #17 in the first round. It costs me the 1(23) pick, and my 4th round pick next year.
1(17): T Roy Bellevue(28/54/4.7)—I hope he can start at RT. He’s rated 13/43, 23/58, 64,44/58.
2(23): TE Nicky Rhodes (28/60/5.2)—I couldn’t re-sign my TE, so this guy could start.
3(23): S Hugh Duran (25/55/4.7)—Looks like a future starter. 22/80 in M2M, 54/72 in bump and run, 86/89 in INT’s.
4(23): DE Thomas Wuerffel (11/46/3.5)—He’s 6/70 in run defense and 4/53 in diagnosis. Worth taking a flier on him.

6(23): T Preston Matthews (16/43/3.5) —Rated 4/38, 10/45, 40, 47/64. Worth a shot.
7(23): MLB Randy Ikuma (11/40/3.4)—2/40 run defense, 8/65 pass rush tech.

How are you doing the games? Are you watching or calling the plays or just simming? This is a great thread.

With FOF2K4 coming out, I've decided to play through this dynasty quickly, in more of a "GM" mode. I'll focus my time on free agency and drafting, and let the computer handle the bulk of the coaching, game plans and depth charts.

COMMENTS:

I was surprised to see the CPU go with Farley over Brook, but I certainly can’t argue with those results. He was #2 in the league in QB Rating.

Fulton continues to look like an elite RB. He was 2nd in the league in rushing yards, plus he caught 66 passes this year.

We head to the playoffs with several key injuries: DE Harmon, P Falvey, SLB Turner and TE Castillo are all done for the year.
