Road Warrior Hawk passes away

by Dave Meltzer

Mike Hegstrand, part of perhaps the most successful tag team ever on the U.S. wrestling scene, the Road Warriors, passed away at about 1:30 a.m. last night. Further details are unavailable. He is believed to be either 45 or 46.

That's just sad

Yeah, I saw that. Seems 40-50 is the lifespan of most of these guys.

Why doesn't anyone know the ages of these guys? As far back as I can remember, the wrestlers are always "believed to be" a certain age.

The other member of the Road Warriors, Animal, lives in Plymouth, MN and frequents the sporting goods store that I manage there.

His son is a very good hockey player, as is former Major League pitcher Juan Berenguer's, although Juan has admitted to me numerous times that he knows nothing of the sport.

Sad news though.

40-50 is the lifespan because most of the guys "juiced" extremely heavy in the 80's, when wrestling was in its all-time boom and then the emphasis and all the attention was on the "super-heavyweights", if you werent 300 and 4 percent body fat, you didnt get pushes, thats sad and unfortunate as then many of the past their prime luchadors were really something back then, but didnt get seen.

R.I.P.

Not to mention Hawk had serious drinking and prescription drug problems for a while, which i'm certain didn't help any.

Another one gone. Many moons ago I posted a thread pondering the young deaths of all these wrestling stars. The HBO sports show with Bryant Gumbel did a story on it and they leaned heavily on Roddy Piper who said it's from a lifestyle full of drugs and excess. Big shock. But Piper did say he led a daily routine of coke and painkillers, from up to down and bac up again, that he thought would eventually take several years off his life. I guess steroids for people like Hawk (just presuming here) would multiply it even further. Still it's sad.

The Legion of Doom was the bomb. This saddens me.

If any of you have seen Beyond The Mat, the part about Jake Roberts is really sad too.

Those guys really need a union.

Jake Roberts died? How did I miss that. I grew up when the Road Warriors were in their prime. Saw them in person only once. Those guys were awesome. This is sad. As for why they die, it is probably, 33% "juice", 33% painkillers, and 33% the physical beating their bodies take. The other one percent would be "natural causes."

It was Hawk's line. Hawk was the one who talked in the Road Warriors.
