I don't know which is more amazing, the kick or the kid's arrogance

http://espn.go.com/gen/news/2003/1004/1630442.html

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- David Rosenbaum kicked a 62-yard extra point in a high school game. No big deal, he said. He's made longer kicks in practice.

The astonishing kick came after a 69-yard kickoff return for a touchdown -- by none other than Rosenbaum himself.

Following the TD return, Rosenbaum and his teammates drew 15-yard penalties for excessive celebration, unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting. That put the ball at the 45 for the point-after, and Rosenbaum split the uprights in the third quarter to highlight Wilson High School's 41-0 victory over Spingarn on Friday night.

"I saw it as a chip shot," Rosenbaum told the Washington Post. "I have hit longer ones in practice."

The D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association does not have records of the longest league kicks, but this was longer than the state record for field goals in Virginia and Maryland. The national high school field goal record is 68 yards by Dick Borgonone of Reno, Nev., in 1985.

Oddly, Rosenbaum's longest field goal is only 27 yards, kicked last week. He will attend Virginia next year on a soccer scholarship.

I've seen a lot of kickers in high school that can kick the ball very long but when they get to college, without a tee they can't kick a 25 yard field goal.

Good point. Also sounds like the kid isn't planning on playing football since he's going to college on a soccer scholie, unless he plans to walk-on.

I didn't take it as arrogant. Maybe "irrational exuberance."

Kick it off a tee? When I played football in high school, we didn't kick it off a tee for our FGs. (I wonder if NJ has different rules for this...)

It varies from state to state I believe, as I asked a couple of my friends who are from different states and they state their team did kick off of a tee. I also played H.S. ball in NJ and our team has never kicked off of a tee.

Yes, who knows.
Perhaps this kid could some day be the next Dick Borgonone?

A tee! I should be so lucky. When I was a kid we used to have to carry pails of dirt in from the sideline to fill in a three foot hole. And that was after the center snapped the ball!
