Coaching Career of Tristan Keaton (FBCB)
Background
Tristan Keaton is a 36 year old with 8 years of experience as an assistant coach, with the last 4 years at Duke where he helped win two National Championships. Keaton is known for his coaching skills, he is slightly stronger on the defensive side. If he has one knock its his recruiting ability. Next Step During his 4 years at Duke, Keaton learned a lot about the X's and O's from coaching legend Earl Stearns. Stearns will be entering his 27th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils, he has won an NCAA record 753 games. His coaching tree is quite extensive, with 10 previous assistants now holding head coaching positions. From day 1 Stearns groomed Keaton to be the next to head coach that had learned from him. Judgement Day Keaton and Stearns had a long talk about what is next for Keaton, Stearns pushed Keaton to apply for the Winthrop Men's Basketball opening. At first Keaton was reluctant but once Winthrop's AD caught wind of the recommendation the Eagles offer came and Keaton couldn't turn it down. A Disappointing History Many feel like Winthrop should be the class of the Big South but time and time again they have failed to make the right choice to run their program. In the last 26 years, they have only made it to the NCAA Tournament 2 times - 2004 and 2005. They then lost head coach Daniel Yarbrough to Charleston, where he quickly turned that program into a winner and Winthrop fell back to its old ways. To date, Winthrop remains the only team in the conference to not have won a regular season Conference Championship. Can Keaton build a winner at Winthrop and if so can Winthrop keep him? |

2012 Offseason
First thing on Keaton's agenda is to complete his coaching staff, with a tight budget of $240K Keaton decides to split the budget in half allowing for $120K to go to his staff. His first addition was Dale White, a 60 year old veteran with 26 years of experience as an assistant. White will be the Recruiting Coordinator, his contract is for 3 years at $40K per year. Up next was Steven Palma, a 26 year old with no previous experience. He will be the Lead Scout, he was also signed to 3 years at $40K per year. Rounding out the staff is Cornelius Merrick, a 51 year old with 8 years of experience - most recently at Toledo. Merrick was also signed to a 3 year deal at $40K per year. To Keaton's surprise his Eagles were invited to play in the Legends Classic as the 15th seed. Others in the tournament include UCLA, Louisville, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Xavier. Last year while at Duke, Keaton helped the Blue Devils win the Legends Classic. This will be Winthrop's first appearance in the tournament. Come July Keaton, White, and Merrick hit the road hard trying to find the right recruits with 4 scholarships available to fit our up tempo style that requires a high level of defensive ability. Keaton and the staff really likes Frank Pearl, a 6'7" 251 pound Forward from Columbia, SC. Pearl averaged 17 points, 10 boards, and 4 assists last season. Palma loves the tape and tells the team to immediately offer, Palma believes he has All-American potential despite his 2-star rating. Keaton immediately offers . The staffs next visit was to Maxwell Wooldridge, a 6'8" 270 pound 3-star Center from Gastonia, NC. He averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds last season. Keaton extended an offer to Wooldridge. Up next was Rickie Bowling a 3-star point guard from Century, FL. Bowling averaged 19 points and 7 assists last year. He's the type of point guard that Keaton craves and he is immediately offered a scholarship. Finally the staff visits 3-star forward Monroe Christensen from Newton, NC. Christensen is a banger, with Charles Barkley body...he averaged 10 points and 10 boards last year. Keaton extends an offer to him as well. October rolls around and now South Carolina is beating on Wooldridge's door, he is still favoring us so we are still making a major play for him. South Carolina is also after Pearl and Christensen, but has only offered Christensen. Bowling has offers from Samford and Jacksonville State, he has us 3rd on his list. As we head into training camp, the early signing period hits and Pearl signs. If Palma is right, this will be huge for our program. However, we lost Wooldridge to South Carolina. With the open scholarship we offer Jordan Romano a 6'6" 2-star forward from Easley, SC. He's coming off a 13 point, 8 rebound year. His only offer is from Citadel at this point. |

2012-2013 Season Preview
Just before the season we get notification that forward Carl Courtney is suspended due to academics for the first semester. Courtney averaged 2 points and 2 boards last season as a freshman, we'll miss his body and hope to have him back for conference play. Code:
Arthur Dyson is our best player, last year he started 25 games and averaged 10 points per contest. We are pretty optimistic about our backcourt and Tony Ponce shows some interest in redshirting so we take him up on it. Our starting lineup will look like this: C: Orval Leonard (5.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg) - Good on the boards, but leaves a lot to be desired defensively. PF: *Danny Graves (8.8 ppg, 8.0 rpg) - Good on the boards, can score from anywhere on the court. OK defender. SF: *Antonia Carranza (6.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg) - Doesn't do anything great, just average at everything though. SG: Frankie Horne (2.8 ppg, 40% 3P) - Great jumper, average defender. PG: *Arthur Dyson (9.8 ppg, 2.1 apg) - Good ball handler, extremely quick, average defender. We'll be running a 9-man rotation this year, in the following order: 6th: Dana Brown (6.9 ppg, 36% 3P) - Could be a big time scorer, good defender and ball handler. 7th: Joshua Milam (3-star recruit) - Potential to be a scorer, average defensively. 8th: Kenneth Medley (transfer from Nebraska) - Can defend inside and out, with some offensive ability. 9th: Stephen Royal - Good defender but soft on the boards. A Look Around the Conference Player of the Year Candidates:

@ #17 Wake Forest (0-0) at Winthrop (0-0) We open the season with a Top 25 opponent, that was for some reason willing to play us at our place. Wake Forest is not short of talent, but they do lack experience. The problem is they have brought in Daniel Johnson, a 6'6" guard/forward that can light it up. We'll have to bring our "A" game to hang with them, we are going to try and slow it down to give us a shot.
The first half couldn't have started much worse as they start on a 11-0 run before we hit 2 free throws but then we don't get our first field goal until after 10 minutes into the game. We go into the half down 45-12, with their big guy Forsythe eating us up with 19 points and our front line has combined for 11 fouls in the first half trying to contain him. In the 2nd half we decide we need to try to pick up the tempo and try to break them down off the dribble with our guards. It works for a little while but in the end they are just too good for us, we don't deserve to be on the same court...let alone have them at our place. We get hammered 77-32. Code:

Winthrop (0-1) at Alabama (0-0) Coach Keaton enters this game with more confidence than once would expect, after scouting the Crimson Tide he believes he can beat them. Obviously it will take a courageous effort but they are no where near the talent of Wake Forest. Again we got eaten up inside, especially on the boards - they had 18 offensive boards. That proved too much to over come, we shot 57% from the field and trailed by just 3 with just over 2 minutes to play but let it slip away late. Code:

Louisville (0-1) vs. Winthrop (0-2) Legends Classic - 1st Round Before the game Keaton decides to put Medley in the starting lineup because of his defensive versatility. We don't expect much out of this game, Louisville has All-American caliber players all across their roster. We hung tough for a half but they proved to much for us, we finally did a better job of shutting down the low block but they torched us from outside. Code:

If the first 3 games weren't enough to digest for Keaton - Jordan Romano signs with Citadel and Rickie Bowling signs with Jacksonville State. Keaton quickly gets back to work and offers 3-star forward Chris Hand from Lexington, NC. It may be too late, as he is seriously considering his offer from North Carolina A&T but we do have a prestige advantage. In some better news Monroe Christensen has yet to decide where he is going and South Carolina has moved on, so we are now his only offer that remains. L, 80-75 We blow a sizable first half lead, Leonard has 17 points and 14 boards in the loss. W, 67-59 Keaton finally gets his first win behind Carranza's career high 17 points. NEB-OMAHA L, 76-66 Horne and Dawson struggle shooting, going 7 for 30 combined. W, 80-56 Brown goes for a career high 32 points and Graves grabs a career high 20 rebounds in the upset of NC State! W, 71-70 Horne is fouled at the buzzer and hits both free throws to give the Eagles the 1 point win! L, 86-72 Eagles blow 19 point first half lead, Leonard has 16 points and 10 boards in the loss. L, 74-70 Turnovers cost Eagles late, Brown has 21 points in the loss. W, 59-55 Eagles upset Coastal Carolina behind Brown's 24 points. W, 60-52 Eagles overcome poor shooting to knock off Presbyterian, Dyson sprains ankle - out 1 week. |

We get a boost by getting Carl Courtney back from his suspension, he'll give us some much needed depth up front. Monroe Christensen finally commits, we are looking forward to see how he turns out. Chris Hand ends up signing with North Carolina A&T, Ohio State was making a late run but he had already become attached. For now we will hold onto our remaining 2 scholarships as we continue to scout what is left out there. W, 62-54 We held UNC-A to just 32% shooting from the field and 4 of 24 from deep in the win, Brown had 18 points. L, 84-79 Leonard has 12 points, 10 boards, and 4 assists in the loss. G-Webb pounded it down-low and we couldn't stop them. W, 59-52 We forced 21 turnovers in the win, Graves had 20 points and 14 rebounds. W, 53-44 Leonard has 12 points and 13 boards in the win, as we held Radford to 33% from the field. W, 64-59 We get some payback against G-Webb behind Leonard's 15 points and 13 boards. L, 87-78 Ford goes for 34 for Liberty and we have no answer. W, 65-61 Dyson has 22 in the win over Dartmouth. W, 64-39 Graves had 14 points and 15 boards, we held the Panthers to 28% from the field. I apologize in advance for the inconsistent formatting, I'm just feeling out what works best for me.
February 2013 With our two remaining scholarships, we decide to offer forward Douglas Coons a 6'4" 3-star prospect from Morehead City, NC. He already has offers from Rider, Akron, and Kent State so we are late to the game but its worth a shot. We throw our other scholarship at Rickey Talbert a 6'3" 3-star guard from Miami, FL. We had several schools interested in having him walk-on but no offers. We open the month with a 65-55 loss to UNC-Asheville despite 20 points from Dana Brown. Coastal Carolina pounds us to a 72-52 beating, they killed us on the glass with a 47-25 advantage. We rebound nicely with a 66-49 drubbing of Radford, behind Danny Graves double-double (11 points, 15 rebounds). Orval Leonard has 18 points and 13 boards in the 78-51 route of Presbyterian but Kenneth Medley left the game with a broken finger, he will miss the better part of the next month. A late rally gives us a 67-63 win over Charleston Southern, Brown led the way with 21 points. Another late rally leads us past Liberty to a 74-69 to pull us within 1 game of first place in the conference with 2 to play. Brown and Arthur Dyson combined for 35 points and our front court of Graves and Leonard both had double-doubles combining for 22 points and 26 rebounds. VMI is able to hold us off late and they beat us 77-68, Brown had 22 points and Dyson added 17 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. We recover from a slow start and beat Campbell 75-71 behind Leonard's 20 points and 11 boards. With the win against Campbell we finish the regular season at 16-12 overall and 12-6 in the Big South. March & Big South Conference Tournament
We get bad news to start the month as Rickey Talbert decides to commit to Western Kentucky and Douglas Coons signs with Rider. Rather than spend our scholarships on players we are not all that high on, we decide to hold them until the transfer period or for next season's class. We end getting the #3 seed in the conference tournament with Liberty as the #1 and Coastal Carolina as #2. Our first round game is against VMI whom beat us both times we played this season. VMI beats us for the 3rd time this season, this time 78-67 and we quickly exit the conference tournament. Liberty goes on to beat Coastal Carolina 67-60 to win the conference championship for the 7th time. We hold our breath hoping for some kind of post season invite and we get it, with the CIT offering a #12 seed. Our first game is against St. Francis NY (19-11). St. Francis quickly disposes of us with a 58-49 win, despite Brown's 22 points. They later lose to James Madison who went on to with the CIT Championship. Tennessee won the CBI and Southern Mississippi wins the NIT over Oklahoma State. North Carolina beat Texas for their first national championship in 27 years. Seniors Orval Leonard (9.3 ppg, 9.4 rpg) and Danny Graves (9.9 ppg, 9.4 rpg) were both named to 1st Team All-Big South. While Liberty's Lorenzo Amaral (14.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg) won player of the year. 2013 Offseason
Our recruiting class comes in at #242 nationally and #3 in the conference, with Liberty and Coastal Carolina having better classes in the conference. Nationally Arizona had the top class, followed by Oklahoma, Texas, Georgetown, and Kentucky. For the historical portion of the sim (1986-2012) we had team prestige locked but now have freed it up. Even though our prestige drops from 34 to 33 the AD and school have decided to upgrade our facilities, currently our facilities are only 7th best in the conference. Along with that, the AD has increased his expectations to "Play in the NCAA Tournament". We throw a bunch of scholarship offers out to guy's we don't really have a shot at but they all go elsewhere, the guys that were interested in us we aren't interested in. August comes around and recruiting is in full swing and we have 5 scholarships to play with. After scouting as many players as we could in July, we have settled in on our top 5 targets. The first is Carrol Masterson a 6'4" 3-star small forward from Gastonia, NC. Next is Jason Reinhart a 6'2" 3-star point guard from Charlotte, NC. Following by Carl Pimentel a 6'10" 3-star center from Monroe, NC. Then Joseph Cruz a 6'5" forward from Matthews, NC. Finally Charles Price a 6'8" power forward from Hopkins, SC. October rolls around and we catch wind that Pimentel has an offer from Wake Forest that he is strongly considering and Masterson has an offer from North Carolina State that is more favorable than ours. Reinhart has an offer from UNC-Greensboro but he still has us as his first choice. We decide to ride it out and see what happens with all three. Unfortunately just before training camp we get news that Masterson signs with North Carolina State, Pimentel signs with Wake Forest, and Reinhart has changed his mind and signs with UNC-Greensboro. The good news is Cruz and Price both have signed to play with us. We quickly put a full court press on Johnie McCarthy a 6'9" 3-star power forward from Evans, GA. Then we hit the road to scout more players. Last edited by Balldog : 03-25-2011 at 04:16 AM. |

2013-2014 Season Preview
Looking at our roster in quick glance we have some obvious depth issues, especially in the front court where we only have 3 players taller than 6'6" but we do have a couple capable defenders down low which helps. We have better depth in the back court and hopefully they will be able to carry us. Our rotation will look like this: C: Stephen Roybal, 6'9" junior that is a very good defender in the post and a capable shot blocker but struggles on the defensive boards and offensively in the post.
In the offseason UNC-Asheville fired their head coach after 4 consecutive losing seasons and replaced him Justin Gurley an assistant from Vermont. Presbyterian fired their head coach after 3 seasons and 30 wins. He is replaced by Justin Earls an assistant from Saint Mary's. After 3 years and 27 wins Radford also fired their head coached and replaced him with Wade Furman who was an assistant at Michigan previously. He's a great recruiter so we will have to watch out for them. Last year the conference was pretty young with a couple veteran stars, this year a lot of teams return quite a bit of experience with VMI leading the way with all 5 starters returning. It appears to be 3-horse race for the conference player of the year between sophomore C Jack Downes (11ppg, 6.9 rpg) from Charleston Southern, senior PF Carlos Hunt from Coastal Carolina (7.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and senior G Nestor Brinkman from Liberty (15.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg). Others to watch for are:
Duke is the preseason #1 with a veteran roster full of stars and 2 incoming high level recruits they are poised at run for their 4th national championship. Louisville, Kansas, Syracuse, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, UCLA, and Indiana round out the Top 10. |

November 2013
We open the season with a 68-58 win at Florida A&M behind Medley's career high 18 points, he was 6 of 8 from the field. For some reason Wake Forest likes to play at our place, we get them again at home and this time give them a scare for the first 30 minutes before they finally pull away. We lose to the Deacons 66-52, Brown had 17 in the loss. We collapse against in the 83-67 loss at Furman, Courtney scored 18 points and grabbed 8 boards in the loss. We aren't able to overcome a ten minute drought in the first half and loss again, this time at Georgia State 67-60. Roybal had 15 boards to go along with 10 points. We finish the month at 1-3 but played tough in all 3 losses, some minor tweaks to the rotation are coming and hopefully that will help us get over the hump December 2013 Johnie McCarthy declines our offer and chooses to go to Florida State instead, can't blame him but they came out of nowhere and surprised us. We make an offer to Xavier Stiles a 6'10" 1-star center from New Port Richey, FL. We also throw an offer at Millard Lara a 6'2" 3-star guard from Cherry Valley, AR. And finally we put an offer into Richard Shaw a 6'7" 3-star center/forward from Dillon, SC but it looks like he will be going to Old Dominion though. We open the month with another tough road loss, this time at Chattanooga 66-62. Dyson had 22 points, he seemed to play better with the less minutes he got but he continues to shoot way too much for my liking. We rebound nicely with an impressive 72-64 win over UNC-Wilmington, Brown had 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. VCU beats us on a buzzer beater, 57-55. Brown scores 24 in the loss. Bowling Green holds us to 31% from the field and we lose again, this time 58-50. Citadel burries us at home, 62-53, Brown had 14 points to lead us in the loss. We dominate SC State to recover, 75-62 behind Dyson's 24 and Brown's 23. We follow up the win by getting our butts' kicked by Charleston, 82-55. After that loss, we manage to win our conference opener against a decent VMI team, 70-63. We had six guys score 7 points or more. Coastal Carolina upsets us at home, 61-58, as our offense continues to struggle. Then comes an 0-11 Presbyterian team with a chance for us to get healthy, but we lay an egg and trail by 24 at one point before losing 72-62. They had five guys in double figures. We finish the month at 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Its time to take advantage of our "depth" and we decide to pick up the tempo, hoping that will give our offense some life. Code:

As expected Richard Shaw signs with Old Dominion. Millard Lara ends up signing with Southern Mississippi, but we are able to sign Xavier Stiles at least. In desperation mode we start scouting JUCO players. We get some life out of our offense but Brown fouls out and we end up losing 76-68 to UNC-Asheville. Brown had 14 points in 17 minutes. We lose it late to G-Webb, 71-68, they missed a free throw with 8 seconds left but we let them get the offensive rebound. We are at a loss on how to turn this season around after another loss at home, this time to Charl. Southern 84-68. It's time to tweak the starting lineup and dodge the up tempo experiment, Medley gets benched in favor of Horne. Radford kills us on the glass and smothers us on offense, holding us to 31% from the field. We lose 46-38. We lead all game against G-Webb but blow it late then lose in OT, 89-82. Dyson had 27 points, 6 boards, and 5 assists in the loss. G-Webb is in 1st place in the conference, so I feel a little better. We get a nice road win over a good Liberty team, 61-51, behind Horne's 14 points. We seemed to find the right mix as we blow out High Point 67-33, but they are terrible so we are trying not to get too excited. Code:

How are you choosing your recruiting targets? Like, are they to fit your system or is it about best available kid?
Good start here and hopefully you can get it turned around.

February 2014
We open the month with some momentum but that ends quickly with a 52-46 loss to UNC-Asheville, we were with in 4 most of the game but could never get a run going to takeover. Coastal Carolina embarrasses us on our home court, 67-53, but we rebound with a nice win against Radford, 66-57. Dyson had 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in the win. Presbyterian beats us again, this time 62-58. We decide to put Christensen in the starting lineup, replacing Courtney. Either the conference is down or they played a brutal non-conference schedule, all 7 of their wins are in conference play. Charl. Southern crushes us again, 84-58. Liberty beats us behind a big first half, 63-55. We pull out a lucky win at VMI, 72-70. Christensen had 18 points and 8 rebounds in the win. We close out the season with a 58-55 loss to Campbell after a furious rally to have a chance to win it we fell short. March & Big South Tournament We get a commit from JUCO point guard Jay Baughman, he's a 2-star from Louisville, KY. Unfortunately we finished 10th in conference play and don't qualify for the conference tournament, far short of the AD's Expectations. VMI gets the #1 seed with Charleston Southern earning the #2 seed. #8 seed Radford upset VMI in the first round, then got beat by 20 against Gardner-Webb in the semi-finals. Charleston Southern meanwhile rolled through their first two games and cruised to a 85-74 win. NCAA Tournament and Other Tournaments The #1 seeds are USC (27-5), Kentucky (29-6), Duke (33-1), and Louisville (30-3). Charleston Southern gets a #13 seed and will face Oregon in the First Round. Louisville is the only #1 seed not to make it to the Final 4, they lost to Michigan State in the Sweet 16. USC beats Duke 84-76 and Kentucky beats Michigan State 74-70 to play in the Finals. USC then pounds Kentucky 78-62 to win their first National Championship. Wake Forest beats LSU to win the NIT. Saint Mary's beats La Salle to win the CBI. Toledo beats Akron to win the CIT. Awards Liberty's Nestor Brinkman won Big South Player of the Year (21.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.6 apg). Liberty's Charles Kramer won Big South Freshman of the Year (11.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.1 apg) Our only award winner was Christensen, who was selected to Big South All-Freshman Team after averaging 2.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg. 2014 Offseason
Right before the end of the season we offer to Daniel Hastings a 6'8" forward from Franklin, NC. He's only a 1-star prospect but is a good rebounder and shot blocker. The recruiting reports come and we have the 223rd ranked recruiting class nationally and the 4th best in the conference. Ahead of us in the conference is UNC-Asheville, Coastal Carolina, and Presbyterian. Syracuse had the top ranked recruiting class, with 5 5-star recruits and 2 4-stars. The rest of the top 10 is Indiana, Louisville, Kansas, Michigan State, Duke, Texas A&M, Maryland, North Carolina, and Oklahoma State. Some of the top incoming freshman in conference:
Recruiting period starts and we have 4 scholarships available, we extend offers to the following:
We drop our offers to Mahan and Glover and instead offer:
Just before camp Soper signs with Clemson and Macon signs with Nicholls State. We do manage to get Allen signed before North Carolina pulls the trigger on an offer. Gonzalez remains unsigned and we decide to put an offer back on Glover, as well as:

2014-2015 Season Preview
Unfortunately Monroe Christensen is suspended for the first semester and hopefully will be eligible come January 1. That's a pretty devastating setback for us, he seems like he's going to be a star. C: Stephen Roybal, 6'10" senior that is primed for a big year, at least defensively.
Around the Conference High Point fired Gary McCune in the offseason after winning just 11 games in his final 2 years. His first 2 years he had taken them to the CIT, he is replaced by Julian Jeffrey who was previously an assistant at George Washington. Players to Watch:
Texas is the preseason #1 team in the AP poll followed by Arizona, Duke, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, and Indiana. |

We win our season opener 72-68 at home against USC Upstate, it was tight the whole way largely in part due to our 19 turnovers. Pearl was huge off the bench with 12 points and 9 boards. Our second game of the season is a 78-76 OT loss at home to NC Central, Milam had 23 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. For the second game in a row foul trouble haunts us, we lose 73-61 to Morehead State. A late drought costs us a chance to knock off Valpo on the road, but we end up losing 60-50. In surprising news, we get a commitment from Joe Glover and Brian Gonzalez. Tony West though decided to sign with Furman. |

December 2014
Heading into the month we decide to abandon our man to man defense because we are fouling too much, we are committing 22.8 fouls per contest. We start the month off with a strong showing at #21 West Virginia but they pull away late in the 2nd half and end up beating us 83-60. It was tied with 10 minutes to play, Ponce had 20 in the loss but we still committed 21 fouls as a team. We are finally able to stay out of foul trouble and beat North Florida 56-52, behind Milam's 19 points and Courtney's 10 points and 13 rebounds. Nineteen turnovers doom us on the road in a 64-49 loss at Wofford, Horne had 16 points, 9 rebounds but 5 turnovers. We continue to turn the ball over too much and foul too much, leading to a 75-67 loss at Middle Tennessee. Horne had 10 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds. The worst part of the loss is Roybal left the game with a concussion and the team doctor's are saying he is out for 30 days, so we will be without our starting front court until January. We'll slide Courtney to center and put Pearl in at power forward, and Charles Price will get some minutes off the bench. We go into letdown mode and get blasted by Charlotte, 77-44, we didn't have a single player score in double figures. Their star guard Derek Roby scored a career high 34 on us. Pearl leads us to a 67-49 win in our conference opener over VMI, he had 16 points and 9 boards. We lose it late 71-60 to Chattanooga, Milam and Ponce combined for 35 but also shot 12 of 34 combined. Price hurt his wrist in the loss, he'll be out for a week. Tough year to be a big guy for us. We get a nice spurt that allows us to pull away from Coastal Carolina and win 72-60 behind 20 from Milam and 19 from Ponce. We blow a late lead but are able to beat Presbyterian in OT, 67-61. Ponce continues to score at will with 22 on the night. We finish the month 5-8 overall and 3-0 in the conference! We make an offer to Emerson Snodgrass, a 3-star guard from Turbeville, SC. Our scouting reports love him, he has interest from Clemson and Charlotte but no offers from either. |

Snodgrass signs with us, he's got blue square potential - we'll see what that really ends up being. He is the 147th ranked player in the country. We start the month with a full roster now, as Christensen is eligible and Roybal has been cleared to play. I think we have some chemistry issues to get through, UNC-Asheville jumps on us early and cruises to beat us 54-44 - it was 39-18 at the half. We get blown out again, this time by Gardner-Webb 68-48. After the loss we decide to bench Christensen, he's too much of a liability on offense at this point. The team responds with a 62-60 win over 11-2 Charleston Southern. Roybal had 17 points, 11 boards, and 5 blocks in the win. We held Radford to just 9 points in the first half en route to the 54-33 win. G-Webb has our number, they pound us 77-52 behind Jame Oliva's 32 points. Our backcourt carries us to a 71-64 win over Liberty - Ponce had 20, Horne had 18, and Milam had 16. We cruise to a 55-46 win over Lafayette, Ponce led the way with 23. Our offense wakes up and we pound High Point, 79-60. Milam had 11 points, 9 assists, and 4 boards. UNC-Asheville disposes of us rather easily again, this time 69-51. We finish the month at 10-12 overall and 7-4 in the conference. We are currently in 2nd place, but trail Gardner-Webb by 2 games. February 2015 Our defense strangles Coastal Carolina on our way to the 61-40 win, Roybal had 8 points, 10 boards, and 3 blocks in the win. Radford gets some revenge and beats us 64-50, their star forward Jimmy Bryant led the way with 27 points. We shot 56% in the 66-63 win against Presbyterian, Ponce led us with 23 points. Milam left the game with a broken foot, it looks like he will miss the rest of the season, he is our 2nd leading scorer at 13.7 points per game. Charleston Southern's press gives us fits and we turn it over 24 times in the 69-47 loss. We continue to struggle to score in a 58-49 loss to Liberty. The loss of Milam is taking its toll, we lose again 63-44. We lose Horne early and lose in overtime to Campbell 68-64, Ponce had 21 in the loss. I'm ready to throw in the towel, as Horne is out for the rest of the season with a torn abdominal muscle. We finish the season with a 4 game losing streak and end up at 12-17 overall and 9-9 in the conference. Big South Tournament We end up with the 5th seed, while Gardner-Webb gets the 1st seed and Charleston Southern has the 2nd seed. We get Coastal Carolina in the first round but we just don't have the fire power and lose 55-41. Courtney tried to carry the team with 14 points and 10 boards but we just lost too much the last few weeks with injuries. Not to mention Baughman left the game with a bruised cheekbone. Gardner-Webb ends up beating Charleston Southern in the Championship game, 77-62. NCAA Tournament The #1 seeds belong to Purdue, Texas, Florida, and Kentucky. Purdue gets bounced by #16 seed Maryland-Eastern Shore, 71-70 in the first round! Florida got blown out in the second round by Kansas State, 89-70. Texas lost to Vanderbilt in the Elite Eight, 90-81. The Final Four included Nevada, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky with Nevada beating Kansas State and Vanderbilt to win the National Championship. NIT: Florida State beats UCLA, 85-68. CBI: Xavier beats Oregon. CIT: Gonzaga beats Northeastern. The Players that Got Away
We got shutout of the Big South awards, the league should be strong next year with 6 juniors named to the 1st and 2nd Team's including junior Damian Maldanado from Campell. He was named Player of the Year after averaging 11.6 points and 9.9 boards per game. Code:

2015 Offseason
Our recruiting class comes in as the 85th best in the country, and 1st in the conference by a long way. Radford was 2nd at 151st. Nationally the top class belongs to Michigan State - they are followed by Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Duke, North Carolina, and USC. Some of the top recruits in the conference:
Just before training camp we get word from both Strange and Ball that they are signing with us! |

2015 - 2016 Season Preview
The freshman class we brought in has brought all kinds of hope for the future, with all 4 recruits coming in with green square potential. During training camp Gonzalez suggests that he is willing to redshirt this year, we will take him up on it since we have plenty of options at the guard positions. C: Charles Price, So., 6'8", 228 lbs, Price has potential to be an elite post defender but he's only an average rebounder and a liability on the offensive end.
The first and second place teams from a year ago are both replacing longtime head coaches as Sammy Galindo retired from Charleston Southern and Elmer Lovell retired from Gardner-Webb. Charleston Southern has hired Scott Katz to replace Galindo, this is his 2nd head coaching job, his first was at Savannah State where he was fired after going 13-48. G-Webb has hired Jerald Seymore to replace Lovell, he has been an assistant for the past 7 years. Both Seymore and Katz were assistants last year at LSU, helping the Tigers to a 21-12 record. Top returning players:
Around the Country Texas enters the season as the #1 team in the country followed by Arizona, Pittsburgh, Florida, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina. |

November 2015
Our non-conference schedule this year should be easier than what we've been playing. We shoot just 30% from the field in the 60-55 loss to Stetson to start the season. We let SC State hang around all game, but led the whole way until the final minute and they end up beating us 71-69. Glover had 13 points and 10 boards in the loss. Duquesne jumped out on us early, leading by 30 in the first half but we were able to cut the lead to 10 in the second half before they sealed the 73-55 win. Ponce had a career high 29 points. Up next we lose on the road to Mississippi 63-49, Ponce had another big game with 20 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists but we shot just 33% from the field as a team. We finally get a win, with a 66-55 effort against Georgia Southern. Ponce had 22, while Pearl added 14 points and 11 boards. With the win we end the month at a disappointing 1-4. December 2015 It took seven minutes to get our first points against Mississippi Valley State but we got back in it and win 52-49 behind Ponce's 23 points. Alabama beats us 66-46 despite Pearl's 20 points and 11 boards, Ponce laid an egg with 1 point - largely in part due to foul trouble. We get an offensive explosion and beat Savannah State 82-70 - Ponce had 27, Milam had 20, and Price added 14 points and 10 boards. We get a big win against Wofford, 62-53. Pearl had another double double, this time 19 points and 11 boards. Milam went down with a back injury, he will be day to day. We lose a tough conference opener to VMI 80-68, it was tied with 4 minutes to play and we got sloppy at the end. We hold Coastal Carolina to 16 2nd half points and win easily 57-41. Ponce had 17 and Pearl had 12 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists. We lose on the road to Presbyterian 80-63, Pearl had another good game with 7 points, 8 assists, and 7 boards. Bennie Derrick pops us for 26 points, 9 boards, and 4 assists as UNC-Asheville pounds us 75-60. We finish the month at 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference. |

We get word that starting C Joe Glover is suspended for the remainder of the season, he was averaging 6 points and 6 boards a game. Pearl will move over to the PF spot and we'll slide freshman John Allen in at the point, moving Milam to shooting guard and Ponce to small forward. Hastings is also frustrated with his playing time, but we are not going to cave in so I suspect he will transfer. Despite shooting 49% from the field we lose to G-Webb 75-66, Milam enjoyed his new role going off for 27 points and 8 rebounds. We rebound nicely with a 72-61 win over Charleston Southern, Price had 17 points and 8 boards while Stiles had 7 points and 14 boards off the bench. Then we get a much needed road win at Radford, 65-51. Allen was player of the game with 6 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Ponce broke out of his mini-funk with 22 points. We lead G-Webb for 39 minutes but lose it in the final minute, 57-56. Then we lose a tough one, 76-71, to Liberty. Ponce had 25 in the loss. We get healthy with a road win at USC Upstate, 64-52, behind Pearl's 14 points, 12 boards, and 5 assists. Ponce scores a career high 33 as we beat Longwood 68-55. We blast High Point at their place, 80-53, behind Pearl's 25 points and 5 boards. We finish the month with what feels like a rare win against UNC-Asheville, 64-53. Ponce had 21 and Pearl had 13 points and 15 rebounds. |

February 2016
Our first game of the month is a win on the road against Coastal Carolina, 66-60. Ponce had 28 points in the win. We followed up with a win at home against Radford, 66-53. Ponce had 22 points, 8 boards and Milam had 19 in the win. We battle through foul trouble and win again, this time beating Presbyterian 67-56 behind strong free throw shooting. We made 22 of 24 from the line. Then Charleston Southern pounds us 82-66, despite 29 points from Milam. Liberty has clinched the Big South regular season title, but we pound them from start to finish in a 77-60 win. Ponce led the way with 30 points, including 8 three pointers. We follow up that big win by barely beating the last place team in the conference, VMI 73-69. Ponce had 29 and Milam had 22 in the win. We end the regular season with a 78-68 win against Campbell, Ponce continues to tear it up. This time he added 32 and Milam had 22 again. Big South Tournament We finish the regular season at 17-12 overall and 11-7 in the conference, that puts us as a 3rd seed for the tournament. Liberty had the #1 seed and Gardner-Webb has the #2 seed. Our first round matchup is against Charleston Southern, whom we split with on the season. We knock off Charleston Southern 76-69 thanks to Ponce's hot hand once again, this time he had 33 points. Price added 11 points and 15 boards, while Pearl had 10 points and 10 boards. Ponce was 8 of 9 from deep. Presbyterian knocked off Gardner-Webb and we lay an egg against them, they destroy us 80-53. We shot just 33% from the field as Ponce cooled off, scored just 16 on 4 of 17 shooting. Pearl had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Liberty ends up crushing Presbyterian 86-63 in the championship game. Postseason Tournaments Unfortunately we don't get invited to any postseason tournaments. The #1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament:
Vanderbilt loses to Stanford in the second round, 107-100. Maryland loses to Southern Mississippi in the second round 76-51. UCLA, Texas, Virginia Tech, and Villanova make it to the Final 4. With Villanova beating Va Tech, 56-45, and UCLA beating Texas, 86-69. Texas pounds Villanova in the finals 82-66. Gonzaga beat Minnesota to win the NIT. California beat Northeastern to win the CBI. Santa Clara beat VCU to win the CIT. Awards PG Charles Kramer from Liberty is named Player of the Year (15.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 5.5 apg) Ponce was named to 1st Team All-Conference after averaging 18.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Pearl was named to 2nd Team All-Conference after averaging 9.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Allen was named to All-Freshman Conference after averaging 5.0 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 rebounds per game. We went 13-5 with him in the starting lineup. |

The AD announces another facility upgrade, we currently have the 3rd best facilities in the conference. Unfortunately Cornelius Merrick has decided to retire so we will need to replace our lead assistant. Our recruiting class was ranked 269th overall and 8th in the conference, but we are pretty happy with the 2 guys we brought in. Top recruits in the conference:
We hire Charles Skinner, a 38 year old with no D1 experience to takeover as lead assistant coach. He's solid both offensively and defensively but needs to improve in recruiting. We get invited to the Great Alaska Shootout as the 8th seed and will gladly accept. We have 3 scholarships available and quickly get to work. By the end of August we have offers out to the following:

Around the Conference All was quiet on the coaching change front in the Big South this offseason, we'll see if that relates to an even more competitive league this year. Top Returning Players:
Syracuse is the unanimous #1 team in the country, they've added Lenard Rivers whom is projected as the #1 pick in next year's NBA Draft to that stellar class they had a few years back. North Carolina, Texas A&M, Duke, UCLA, Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas, Connecticut, and Michigan State round out the Top 10. |

November 2016
We open the season with a horrible second half and lose to East Tennessee State 77-62, Ponce had 27 points in the loss. Our defense is off to a slow start after a 91-77 loss at Central Florida. Ponce had 25 points and Pearl had 19 points and 8 boards. We let one get away with a loss at home to Central Arkansas, 74-71. Ponce and Pearl each had 14 points and 8 boards. We pull off a big upset in the 1st round of the Great Alaska Shootout beating Wisconsin 69-66. Pearl had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. We hang tough with Marshall in the 2nd round but fall short, 82-75. Ponce had 24 points and Gonzalez added 21 off the bench. In our final game with give Providence a run for their money but we lose again, 73-66. Ponce had 25 points, including going 10 of 10 from the field. After we get home from Alaska, we decide to bench Allen in favor of Gonzalez. We again struggle defensively and lose to Alcorn State 80-73. We are going to ditch the 1-3-1 defense and go back to 100% man to man. Last year our defense was in the top 10 nationally in several categories, so far this year we are getting lit up in every way possible. December 2016 We get a big effort from Pearl in our second win of the season, beating SIU-Edwardsville 80-58. He had 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. We follow up the win with a disappointing loss to New Hampshire, 73-60. We overcome a 12-0 start but then lose it late to UMBC 50-46. Pearl had 27 points and 9 boards before leaving the game with a severe concussion, it looks like he may miss the remainder of the season. We lose our conference opener to VMI, 70-67. Ponce had 20 in the loss. ECU beats us 80-69 in overtime, and we decide to rethink our gameplan. We are going to try to slow down the tempo a little bit. We shoot 34% in a loss to Charleston Southern then beat Campbell 63-54. UNC-Asheville beats us on a buzzer beat 71-70, Ponce had 27 in the loss. Coastal Carolina pulls away late to beat us 77-68 behind Luther Cormier's 29 points and 12 boards. This might be my most frustrating season I've experienced, we have great defensive players but we can't stop anyone. January 2017 We overcome a 20 point first half deficit and beat Radford in OT 81-73, Ponce had 22. We pound a winless High Point team, 83-61. Coastal Carolina cruises past us 68-54, we held Cormier in check but the rest of the team went to work for them. Liberty beats us 63-49, Charles Kramer had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Flames. Ponce had a season low 8 points and left the game with a broken nose, he shouldn't miss any further action. We sneak by Savannah State 62-58, Allen had 18 points and 8 boards. Gardner-Webb beats us easily 65-54 and Pearl returns to the lineup in time for us to beat UNC-Asheville 58-52. Ponce had 22 in the win. We are now 7-16 overall and 4-7 overall, we are in 10th place in the conference but only 1 game out of the conference tournament. February 2017 We start the month by beating Charleston Southern 72-57, Bell had 14 points and 7 boards off the bench. High Point falls to 0-23 after we beat them 73-44, Ponce had 24 points. We fail to get back to .500 in the conference after losing to Campbell 59-55. Radford beats us 58-52 and we lose Gonzalez for a month with a torn ligament. Pearl goes for a career high 30 points in the blowout win over Liberty, 89-74. We blow out VMI 66-50 behind Pearl's 21 and Ponce's 20. We finish the season with a 58-53 loss in OT against Presbyterian. The loss puts us at 11-18 overall and 8-10 in the conference, we make the conference tournament! |

We got on a 10-0 run to end the first half and never trail again, as we beat Presbyterian 49-44. Pearl had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Foul trouble kills us against Charleston Southern and they route us 63-42. Liberty ends up knocking off Coastal Carolina 42-41 in their semi-final matchup and then beats Charleston Southern 68-50 to win the conference championship and get an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. Postseason Tournaments The #1 seeds are:

For the most part the offseason was a quiet one and July came along rather quickly, now Keaton has 3 scholarships at his disposal again this year. Offers are extended to:
And just before training camp Keaton finds out all three guys will be going elsewhere - Sutter to Tennessee-Martin, Turner to Morehead State, and Hemphill to VMI. |

So I was going to kill this career because it didn't seem to be going anywhere and I decided to sim a couple more seasons quickly to see what happens. Well I've now won 3 straight conference championships and we are probably favorites to win the next 2 as well if Keaton doesn't decide to leave.
