Someone ought to work on one of those translator websites that scrambles other sites in this way...
I, too, found the original posting very readable. |

What if you don't parse paragraphs word by word, but instead by groups of words? I read it ok, but I had to go more word by word than I normally would.

Has anyone tried to complete a speed reading course. I've always wanted to try and apply myself to this. Seems like this research and speed reading are inter-related.

I've heard that faster readers are often bad spellers, and this seems to fall in line with that.
It is amazing how easy it is to read that, though, isn't it? |

I'd never thought of it, but that seems to fit, at least in my case. I'm generally a pretty good speller, but read laboriously slow.

I completely agree with that statement. Interestingly, I'm a very quick speed reader who took a course in speed reading in college to be more productive. I've always just scanned a line, and I read the above paragraph in approximately 2-3 seconds without any problems understanding any of the words. I think it is all about the context of words and sentence structure. I'm also a fairly quick typist and as a result I imagine I make quite a few grammatical and spelling errors on this board. When I'm writing in medical charts, I make sure I go back and re-read it so I don't make this careless mistakes. I do the same thing with prescriptions. |

That's a fascinating psychological discovery. Of course, I think it would be nicer if the folks at Cambridge found a way to solve the problem in the first place rather than endorsing the problem.

I'm the same way. I read lightning fast. I'm a pretty bad speller. I never needed to take a speed reading course though. I've always just looked at each line as a picture and zipped through it. I had a teacher who didn't believe I could "hold" the information when I read that fast. She gave me a five page short story to read. (I read the five pages in 95 seconds) She then gave me 20 questions. I scored 19/20. I really am surprised that nobody had figured this out earlier. I could have saved them a lot of money. TroyF |

If I understand the words, and the sentences are structured properly, I can read pretty fast... but when I come across words I don't understand, or bad sentence structure, I have to slow down soooo much.
